My Replay Baseball Encyclopedia Fifth Edition- May 2014 My Replay Baseball Encyclopedia Fifth Edition- May 2014 A complete record of my full-season Replays of the 1908, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1966, 1967, 1975, and 1978 Major League seasons as well as the 1923 Negro National League season. This encyclopedia includes the following sections: • A list of no-hitters • A season-by season recap in the format of the Neft and Cohen Sports Encyclopedia- Baseball • Top ten single season performances in batting and pitching categories • Career top ten performances in batting and pitching categories • Complete career records for all batters • Complete career records for all pitchers Table of Contents Page 3 Introduction 4 No-hitter List 5 Neft and Cohen Sports Encyclopedia Baseball style season recaps 91 Single season record batting and pitching top tens 93 Career batting and pitching top tens 95 Batter Register 277 Pitcher Register Introduction My baseball board gaming history is a fairly typical one. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets. I finished a few one and two team seasons, but mostly I just hopped around from one full-season project to another, rarely getting one into June. I switched over to playing computer versions in the ‘90’s, playing APBA’s original computer game, their Baseball for Windows, and some Diamond Mind Baseball. About 2004, I decided I really missed the immersion provided by a cards and dice replay and after some poking around various online forums, I decided that Replay Baseball looked like a game I wanted to try. I bought Replay and the 1978 set of cards. The game arrived at my house on July 17, 2004. I began playing the 1978 schedule the next morning. I finished the 1978 season in February 2006 and have since also completed full-season Replays of the 1908, 1923 Negro National League, 1952, 1956, 1960, 1966, 1967, and 1975 seasons. Along the way, I made what is now a fairly elaborate MS Access database that I use to manage and keep stats for my projects. Since I have all my results in an electronic format, I thought it would be cool to put that data together to make this encyclopedia. Obviously, the records contained here reflect what these players did in an odd assortment of seasons only, but it amuses me to look at the leader lists and think about who will be moving up or joining my “career” top tens as I play my next season. Hopefully, you will have some fun with this. In my recreation, the Pirates won 109 games to top the Cubs by 3 ½ games and the Giants, who faded late, by 12 ½. Honus Wagner pretty much reprised his historic season. He hit .335 with 11 home runs and 115 RBI, slugging .524; the NL league slugging percentage was .303. In the American League, my race lived up to the real season’s barn burner with an astounding Tigers stretch run ultimately claiming the flag. Detroit trailed the Browns by 17 ½ games after the games of August 7 and still found themselves 17 games back on August 28. The Tigers went 34-9 the rest of the way including a 24-2 finishing kick that gave them the pennant by a half game over both the Browns and the Cleveland Naps. The World’s Series went to the Pirates four games to one. MVP's were Honus Wagner in the NL and Sam Crawford in the AL. I started this season project in December 2004 and finished it in August 2006. 1908 AL Detroit Tigers 89-64 -- G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB AVG W- L G GS CG Sh Sv IP H BB SO ERA Claude Rossman 1B 137 561 43 145 32 16 0 7423 60 7 .258 Ed Summers24-11 41 32 23 3 0 309 250 46 121 1.54 Red Downs 2B 81 306 24 81 12 4 2 289 46 4 .265 George Mullin16-15 40 29 22 1 0 273 301 66 123 3.30 Germany Schaefer SS 152 632 72 160 17 13 0 5934 60 29 .253 Bill Donovan17-10 30 28 24 5 0 245 208 44 160 2.20 Bill Coughlin 3B 120 456 36 103 6 0 0 3425 61 9 .226 Ed Willett14-9 32 23 17 4 1 221 197 57 88 2.57 Ty Cobb RF 149 616 87 195 38 24 4 8934 36 48 .317 Ed Killian11-8 28 23 13 0 1 187 177 65 40 2.45 Sam Crawford CF 150 645 96 199 30 17 6 11437 50 12 .309 George Winter5-3 10 6 5 0 0 62 51 7 34 2.34 Matty McIntyre LF 152 626 105 182 33 21 0 4466 76 13 .291 Ed Siever1-4 11 9 3 0 0 54 76 9 22 4.31 Boss Schmidt C 115 443 42 128 17 2 0 4517 59 6 .289 George Suggs1-2 6 1 1 0 0 35 39 5 9 2.57 Herm Malloy0-2 3 2 1 0 0 15 13 4 8 3.68 Charley O'Leary SS 63 221 25 47 5 3 0 1714 16 3 .213 Davy Jones CF 50 116 13 25 4 4 1 1214 8 9 .216 Ira Thomas C 41 114 12 44 5 0 0 253 16 1 .386 Red Killefer 2B 36 95 11 21 2 0 0 99 8 8 .221 Donie Bush SS 186861701037 9 0 .250 Fred Payne C 19482600001 16 0 .125 1908 AL St. Louis Browns 88-64 .5 G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB AVG W- L G GS CG Sh Sv IP H BB SO ERA Tom Jones 1B 152 557 43 129 12 0 0 4126 63 11 .232 Rube Waddell19-17 43 36 25 9 2 320 232 75 313 1.86 Jimmy Williams 2B 146 544 54 121 27 6 9 6546 81 9 .222 Harry Howell20-11 39 31 24 9 3 288 235 79 109 1.91 Bobby Wallace SS 134 516 45 148 27 4 0 5339 59 4 .287 Jack Powell18-13 33 32 25 5 0 282 219 59 100 1.94 Hobe Ferris 3B 146 565 36 158 20 8 0 6316 48 5 .280 Bill Grahame5-8 21 13 6 0 0 134 120 30 57 2.49 Roy Hartzell RF 104 406 50 108 6 11 1 3014 28 22 .266 Bill Bailey7-4 21 11 6 1 0105 8131 56 2.06 Charlie Jones CF 67 263 28 64 9 4 0 1111 25 18 .243 Barney Pelty8-5 19 12 8 0 1 103 90 20 30 1.65 George Stone LF 145 598 90 134 19 8 7 4955 103 25 .224 Dode Criss0-0 9 1 0 0 0 18 20 12 7 5.60 Tubby Spencer C 81 283 16 52 10 0 0 1914 49 1 .184 Danny Hoffman RF 100 380 36 79 8 7 0 1721 50 10 .208 Al Schweitzer CF 50 179 18 48 2 4 0 2616 18 5 .268 Jim Stephens C 43 143 10 31 2 0 0 137 22 0 .217 Emmet Heidrick CF 31 111 15 31 1 1 4 124 9 5 .279 Syd Smith C 249141520150 15 1 .165 Dode Criss RF 527262060045 13 0 .278 Barney Pelty SS 20330400010 6 0 .121 Bert Blue C 9 27 4 6 0 1 0 14 9 0 .222 5 1908 AL Cleveland Naps 89-65 .5 G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB AVG W- L G GS CG Sh Sv IP H BB SO ERA George Stovall 1B 134 535 49 148 35 8 2 5010 50 6 .277 Addie Joss23-13 42 35 27 8 0 313 230 48 144 1.32 Nap Lajoie 2B 154 588 48 175 31 7 1 7450 43 22 .298 Glenn Liebhardt11-15 36 26 17 3 0 263 213 48 165 1.88 George Perring SS 93 335 20 81 12 9 1 2616 28 9 .242 Bob Rhoads16-15 34 29 21 3 0 257 225 52 62 2.24 Bill Bradley 3B 145 568 51 129 17 8 0 4129 49 16 .227 Heinie Berger18-4 27 22 16 6 0 205 132 51 107 1.23 Bill Hinchman RF 133 483 49 110 28 9 5 4836 53 20 .228 Charlie Chech14-6 26 20 15 6 0 196 120 38 62 .69 Joe Birmingham CF 120 422 29 74 11 3 0 3030 71 20 .175 Jake Thielman2-6 12 8 4 1 0 66 68 14 23 3.26 Josh Clarke LF 133 501 75 130 7 6 1 3787 91 44 .259 Cy Falkenberg4-1 9 7 4 2 1 63 48 9 36 1.44 Nig Clarke C 90 329 32 80 10 6 2 5031 58 9 .243 Jack Ryan0-1 7 10 0224160 5 1.14 Ed Foster1-0 5 11 0214 63 8 .64 Harry Bemis C 77 276 25 73 10 0 0 174 34 13 .264 Otto Hess0-0 4 00 0010112 1 1.80 Terry Turner RF 54 203 26 45 16 2 0 1616 27 21 .222 Bill Lattimore0-3 4 4 0 0 0 8.7 23 3 1 14.54 Charlie Hickman RF 54 195 16 45 5 2 0 177 35 3 .231 Walter Clarkson0-1 1 1 0 0 0 5 7 2 1 1.80 Wilbur Good RF 59 186 27 57 3 5 1 1419 18 14 .306 Jack Graney0-0 2 00 00 2 10 0 .00 Dave Altizer CF 279241501047 17 5 .163 Elmer Flick RF 8 33 4 8 0 1 0 22 8 0 .242 Jake Thielman RF 12242200001 9 0 .083 Otto Hess RF 4 4 1 1 1 0 0 00 0 0 .250 1908 AL Chicago White Sox 84-68 4.5 G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO SB AVG W- L G GS CG Sh Sv IP H BB SO ERA Jiggs Donahue 1B 83 313 25 71 10 0 0 3415 44 18 .227 Ed Walsh37-20 62 49 41 12 2 487 394 64 284 1.48 George Davis 2B 117 433 35 88 13 1 0 4339 30 19 .203 Frank Smith19-11 41 34 23 7 2 313 223 69 148 1.58 Freddy Parent SS 116 402 23 82 7 9 0 3649 74 8 .204 Doc White15-15 40 36 21 3 0 291 250 65 139 2.63 Lee Tannehill 3B 135 484 36 118 9 6 0 3127 64 6 .244 Frank Owen5-10 25 13 3 0 0 120 133 43 37 3.76 Ed Hahn RF 115 445 60 113 15 10 0 1536 73 10 .254 Nick Altrock5-6 22 12 6 0 0 114 121 8 20 2.69 Fielder Jones CF 145 525 70 124 12 9 0 3176 49 20 .236 Moxie Manuel3-5 19 6 2 0 1 76 65 29 26 2.97 Patsy Dougherty LF 128 491 65 144 12 11 0 7449 76 58 .293 Andy Nelson0-0 2 1 0 0 0 10 9 7 1 5.40 Billy Sullivan C 135 490 33 95 16 2 0 2921 78 16 .194 Lou Fiene0-1 11100 9 90 0 3.00 Fred Olmstead0-0 1 0 0 0 02.3 6 1 0 11.57 John Anderson RF 105

The Boston Red Sox Wednesday, July 1, 2020 * The Boston Globe College lefties drafted by Red Sox have small sample sizes but big hopes Julian McWilliams There was natural anxiety for players entering this year’s Major League Baseball draft. Their 2020 high school or college seasons had been cut short or canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic. They lost that chance at increasing their individual stock, and furthermore, the draft had been reduced to just five rounds. Lefthanders Shane Drohan and Jeremy Wu-Yelland felt some of that anxiety. The two were in their junior years of college. Drohan attended Florida State and Wu-Yelland played at the University of Hawaii. There was a chance both could have gone undrafted and thus would have been tasked with the tough decision of signing a free agent deal capped at $20,000 or returning to school for their senior year. “I didn’t know if I was going to get drafted,” Wu-Yelland said in a phone interview. “My agent was kind of telling me that it might happen, it might not. Just be ready for anything.” Said Drohan, “I knew the scouting report on me was I have the stuff to shoot up on draft boards but I haven’t really put it together yet. I felt like I was doing that this year and then once [the season] got shut down, that definitely played into the stress of it, like, ‘Did I show enough?’ ” As it turned out, both players showed enough. The Red Sox selected Wu-Yelland in the fourth round and Drohan in the fifth.

  • Impartial Arbiter, New Hall of Famer O'day Was Slanted to Chicago in Personal Life
Impartial arbiter, new Hall of Famer O’Day was slanted to Chicago in personal life By George Castle, CBM historian Monday, Dec. 17 For a man who wore an impenetrable mask of reserve behind his umpire’s headgear, Hank O’Day sure wore his heart on his sleeve when it came to his native Chicago. O’Day was serious he only allowed his few close friends to call him “Hank.” He was “Henry” to most others in his baseball trav- els as one of the greatest arbiters ever. But in a Chicago he never left as home, he could be himself. Born July 8, 1862 in Chicago as one of six children of deaf parents, O’Day always came back home and lived out his life in the Sec- ond City. He died July 2, 1935 in Chicago, and was buried in the lakefront Calvary Cemetery, just beyond the north city limits in Evanston. In between, he first played Hank O'Day in civilian clothes baseball competitively on the city’s sandlots as Cubs manager in 1914. with none other than Charles Comiskey, the founding owner of the White Sox. And in taking one of a pair of season-long breaks to manage a big-league team amid his three-decade umpiring career, O’Day was Cubs manager in 1914, two years after he piloted the Cincinnati Reds for one year. Through all of that, his greatest connection to his hometown was one of the most fa- mous calls in baseball history – the “out” ruling at second base on New York Giants rookie Fred Merkle in a play that led to the last Cubs World Series title in 1908.
