JOSH SOVA HEAD COACH 26 (FIRST YEAR)

Coach Josh Sova is entering his first season as the head coach of the Medaille team. Prior to this season, Sova had spent the previous four years as an assistant for Coach Smaldone. Sova plans to make a lot of changes to the Medaille baseball program as he is focusing on changing the culture of the team.

Under the leadership of Sova the baseball team will be one of the best prepared and hardest working programs in the AMCC. In the coming years, Sova intends to build a team that will not only compete for the AMCC championship each year, but a team that will also excel in the classroom and be model citizens in the community.

In the past, Sova has worked primarily with all of the position players on the fundamentals of hitting, fielding and base running. Since Sova has joined the staff, the team had improved the first three seasons (2009-11) in wins, team batting average, team on-base percentage, and team fielding percentage. Sova has also helped develop several all-conference players since joining the staff as ten players have been selected to the All-AMCC team since his arrival.

Before joining the Medaille Staff, Sova attended St. Bonaven- ture University where he earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Physical Education and was a mainstay on the Atlantic 10 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and the St. Bonaventure Dean’s List. While at St. Bonaventure, he was a four-year letter-winner on the baseball team and helped the Bonnies win their first Atlantic

10 Conference Championship and make their first NCAA Regional Appearance (2004). He was also a member of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference runner’s up. He enjoyed most of his success in his last two seasons as he became a

8 ○ MEET THE COACHES regular in the line-up. Sova led the team and ranked second in the Atlantic 10 with a (.398) batting average in conference contests and finished out his senior campaign with a (.990) fielding percentage.

Before playing collegiately, Sova played three sports while enrolled at Lockport Senior High School. He was a three year varsity starter in football, wrestling and baseball. Sova was twice named to the All-New York State Team as a catcher; Two-time 1st Team All-WNY in baseball; Named 1st team All-Niagara Frontier League in both wrestling (twice) and baseball (three times). As a junior, Sova was voted Section 6 North Division Defensive Player of the Year in football. Sova also was a member of the 2002 Western Region Empire State Team which won the Gold Medal. He is also an active player/coach in the Buffa- lo AAA MUNY summer league.

Sova also worked the past two years in the Medaille College athletic department as a graduate assistant. He was in charge of student workers at athletic events across campus and overseeing the academic success of the undergraduate student athletes. Sova just received his Master's Degree in Special Education at Medaille and graduated with a 3.98 GPA.

Nick Walczak

Assistant Coach 34 Hitting Coach

Coach Walczak is entering his first year with the Mavericks and will be the Hitting Coach. Walczak will focus on teaching and implementing the proper techniques and approach to all Medaille hitters.

Prior to coming to Medaille, Walczak played two years at the University of Buffalo, establishing himself as one of the best fielding first baseman in the MAC. While at Buffalo, Walczak sported a career (.272) batting average and a career (.406) on-base percentage as he drew (53) walks and (22) HBP to go along with his (88) hits and (30) extra base hits.

Prior to UB, Walczak played two years at Alfred State, leading them to two straight WNYAC Region III playoff appearances. Walczak lead the nation in hitting in 2006 with a (.497) batting average while being named a NJCAA All-American. He also was WNYAC co-player of the year and Alfred State's Male Athlete of the year. He currently holds the Alfred State career record for average (.418), by pitch (32) and is second in career doubles with (38).

Walczak is a native of Tonawanda, NY and currently finishing his Sociology degree requirements at UB. During the summer Walczak is active in both the Buffalo MUNY AAA and MUNY AA league.

10 ○ MEET THE COACHES Tim Seil

Assistant Coach 21 Pitching Coach

Tim Seil is in his first season as Pitching Coach for the Mavericks. Seil’s duties will include: overseeing the throwing and stretching programs for all pitchers, developing an offseason strength and conditioning program specific to the pitchers and reviewing and improving the mechanics and mental approaches of all pitchers.

Seil comes to Medaille after completing his playing career at Canisius College in 2012. During his career at Canisius Seil filled many different roles on the pitching staff, including closer and starter. Seil led the staff in saves during the 2011 season. Over his two seasons with the Golden Griffins, Seil threw 50 innings over 26 appearances while walking only 10. The Griffs won 59 games during Seil's two seasons.

Prior to Canisius, Seil pitched at Monroe Community College, in Rochester, NY. Seil helped lead the Tribunes to two straight Division II Junior College appearances in 2008 and 2009. He was captain of the 2009 squad.

The Rochester, NY native graduated from Canisius with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and Health. He is currently working towards his Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Canisius.

Jon McCune

Assistant Coach 35 Recruiting Coord.

Coach McCune is entering his first year with the Mavericks and will be coaching the outfielders and be in charge of leading the recruiting efforts of the baseball team. McCune is currently coming into the program after coaching four seasons with Slippery Rock University Football. His last year, he worked on the defense that finished 2nd in the nation in total defense while claiming the PSAC conference title. Prior to Slippery Rock, McCune coached baseball at Fredonia High School in 2008.

McCune played baseball for two years while at Jamestown CC where he played center field and batted lead-off. His sophomore season at JCC he led the team in hits, while leading the team in walks and runs both seasons. When he left JCC, he was 2nd on their all time list in walks.

Prior to JCC, McCune was a part of a highly successful Fredonia High School Baseball program that made it to the NYSPHSAA State Class B Championship in 2005. McCune also competed in basketball and football.

McCune graduated from Slippery Rock University with a degree in Health and Physical Education and recently obtained his Masters in Parks and Recreation.

12 ○ MEET THE COACHES Paul Smaldone

Volunteer 3 Assistant Coach

Coach Smaldone brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the diamond as he is a member of the Western New York Baseball Hall of Fame and the Canisius High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Coach Smaldone has coached locally for over 25 years, including 18 years as a varsity assistant coach at Canisius High School where the Crusaders won 9 Georgetown Cup titles during that time. Coach Smaldone is currently serving as the Coordinator of high school baseball for the Buffalo Bisons.

Smaldone played baseball collegiately at Fordham University before finishing up his schooling at the University of Toledo College of Law. Coach Smaldone was a practicing attorney employed by the New York State Unified Court System for over 38 years. Paul and his wife Mary Ann reside in Buffalo and have four children and four grandchildren.

Greg Kruszka

Administrative 31 Assistant

Greg is from Gowanda, NY and is in his first year as an administrative assistant with Medaille. Kruszka will be in charge of field maintenance, statistics, and other administrative duties.

Kruszka has had his own experience in coaching baseball as well. Kruszka coached the East Lake Gowanda 13-15 baseball team the past three summers, while enjoying some success as they won the championship last summer. Next summer, he will be the Assistant Coach for the Academy Starts 14U team in Blasdell, New York.

While in high school, Kruszka played two sports basketball and baseball at Gowanda High School. In the spring of 2008 Kruszka was part of the Gowanda Panthers team that made it to the New York State Class B Final Four.

Greg is a senior Sports Management Major and is the Son of Greg Sr. and Lee Kruszka.

Jenna Tuttolomondo Administrative MGR Assistant

Jenna Tuttolomondo is from Kenmore, New York. She is a sophomore at Medaille College and is in her first year as an Administrative Assistant with Medaille. Tuttolomondo will be in charge of statistics, as well as off the field administrative duties.

Before coming to Medaille, Tuttolomondo had played softball for various teams. While attending Kenmore West High School, Tuttolomondo had ran track and played a major part in the year book committee. She had also taken a two year Personal Training course at Erie 1 Boces. She now strives for excellence at Medaille College hoping to graduate early with her Bachelors in Sports Management.

Jenna Tuttolomondo is the daughter of Mary Alagna and John Tuttolomondo.

14 ○ MEET THE STAFF Brenda Dean

Athletic Trainer ATC

Brenda Dean is one of the new athletic trainers at Medaille College. As a local WNYer, Dean holds four different degrees from area colleges. First, she obtained two degrees from the University at Buffalo, one in Psychology and the other in Exercise Science.

Once she graduated from UB, Dean went on to be a Graduate Assistant at Canisius College where she acquired two more degrees. One in Athletic Training and the other in Health and Human Performance.

Dean is part of the Trainer's Association as well as NYS athletic trainer's association. She currently lives in North Tonawanda with her family.

Brad Smith Senior Buffalo, NY 1 McKinley AS A JUNIOR (2012) – Brad continued to pitch well for the Mavs leading the team in appearances with (16). He logged (29) innings, started (2) games, had (16) strike outs, and finished the year with a (4.34) earned average. Brad enters his senior season as the all-time leader in career earned run average at Medaille with a (3.70) career ERA. Brad also is within striking distance of becoming the all-time leader at Medaille in pitching appearances.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2011) - Brad continued to be a very successful and valuable pitcher for the Medaille Mavericks pitching staff. As the team's top option out of the bullpen, Brad made (13) appearances, and logged (28.2) innings. He finished the season with an impressive (3.77) earned run average and led the team with (3) saves. In a relief appearance against Baldwin-Wallace (03/07/11), Brad came in and pitched (7.1) in- nings to finish the game, while only allowing (2) runs, which allowed the Mavs to climb back from a (7) run deficit to win the game (10-9).

AS A FRESHMAN (2010) - Brad pitched (17.2) innings while appearing in (7) games and making (1) start. In his first career start, Brad earned his first career win vs. D’Youville (04/13/2010). He also sported a team low (2.55) earned run average.

HIGH SCHOOL - Brad had a very successful playing career at McKinley playing for Coach Sorrentino. In his three years he recorded a (17-3) record, leading McKinley to back- to-back League Champion- ships. He was selected as the First Team All-High Pitcher all three years and won Player of the Year Award and Champi- onship MVP in both his sophomore and junior years.

PERSONAL - Brad is a Sports Management

major and is the son of Bonny and Tim Smith.

16 ○ MEET THE TEAM Jeff Benz Senior Cicero, NY 4 Cicero-North Syracuse AS A JUNIOR (2012) - Jeff came to Medaille and was immediately one of Medaille’s top pitchers. In his first year pitching for the blue and gold, Jeff appeared in (8) games while starting (7) of them, recording (33) innings pitched. Jeff pitched Medaille to a win against Penn State-Altoona when he pitched (5.1) innings, and only allowed (3) earned runs. He finished the season with a (7.09) earned run average, and striking out a total of (20) batters.

BEFORE MEDAILLE - While at Onondaga Com- munity College, Jeff put up some impressive num- bers his sophomore season. He went (3- 1), with a (2.70) ERA in (26) innings of work. He also struck out (18) while only allowing (23) hits.

HIGH SCHOOL - Jeff compiled a (7-1) record while playing for Coach Rockwell at CNS.

PERSONAL - Jeff is the son of Patrick and Patricia Benz and is a Business major.

Nate Schrlau Senior Wellsville, NY 14 Wellsville AS A JUNIOR (2012) –Nate appeared in (19) games and started (14) games. Although Nate was battling a back injury all season he was still able to contribute to the team with (36) at-bats, (6) hits, (1) , (2) walks, (2) hit by pitches, and (5) RBIs. Nate was also (4-5) in stolen base attempts.

BEFORE MEDAILLE— Nate played two seasons for Finger Lakes Community College. His sophomore season he batted (.387) with a (.429) on- base percentage.

HIGH SCHOOL - Nate played at Wellsville High School and was select- ed at a member of the All-League Team. He also was a co-captain his senior year and knocked in (31) RBIs as a senior.

PERSONAL - Nate is a criminal justice major and is the son of Bill Weller and Diane Schrlau - Weller.

18 ○ MEET THE TEAM Mike Volpe Senior Niagara Falls, NY 23 Niagara Catholic AS A JUNIOR (2012) – Mike had a very good junior season as he appeared and started in (33) games. Mike recorded (23) hits on (91) at bats, (3) doubles, (9) runs scored, (15) walks, and (15) RBIs. Mike finished the year with a (.253) batting average and a (.364) on-base percentage.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2011) - Mike appeared in (17) games, while mak- ing (5) starts. Mike was mainly used as a defensive replacement in the infield. Offensively, Mike recorded (3) hits, including a double that he hit in the opening round of the AMCC Playoffs vs. Mt. Aloysius (05/07/11). Mike also made (2) relief appearances on the mound. On the mound, he threw (2.1) innings, without allowing any runs and only (1) hit.

AS A FRESHMAN (2010) - Mike appeared in (20) games while earning (13) starts. He batted (.194) while recording (7) hits and (3) runs batted in. He also drew (8) walks.

HIGH SCHOOL -Mike attended Niagara Catho- lic and was a three year varsity starter on bas- ketball, baseball, and football teams. He was named to 2nd T e a m A l l Catholic team in basketball and baseball. Niagara Catholic Base- ball team MVP in 07 and 08. Mike was also a Nominee for Male Athlete of The Year award at Niagara Catholic. He was named to the All- Western New York Hon- orable Mention team.

PERSONAL - Mike is a Sports Management ma- jor at Medaille and is the son of Danny and Lori Volpe. Derrek Hoffman Senior Clarence, NY 28 Clarence AS A SOPHOMORE (2010) - Derrek pitched (10.1) innings in (5) ap- pearances. He finished the season with a (6.28) earned run average and (4) strikeouts.

AS A FRESHMAN (2009) - Derrek pitched (24.0) innings in (10) appearances. Derrek notched his first career win in his first career ap- pearance in relief on (03/10/2010) vs. Wilmington. He finished the sea- son with a (5.63) earned run average and (12) strikeouts.

HIGH SCHOOL - Derrek had a career (12-3) record at Clarence High School, under Coach Dave Smith. Derrek went (6-0) and was a ECIC Honorable Mention selection as a junior and winner of the team’s Dedication & Spirit Award. He was a ECIC Second team selection as a senior. He was the first Clarence player to play in three straight sectional finals, winning 2. First pitcher to pitch in state finals in Clarence histo- ry.

AS A JUNIOR (2012) – Pat appeared in (9) games, while making (2) starts. He recorded (1) hit, (1) walk, in (12) at-bats.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2011) - Pat appeared in (16) games making (6) starts. He recorded (4) hits with (1) RBI, (2) runs, with a (.345) on-base percentage and a (.174) batting average.

AS A FRESHMAN (2010) - Pat appeared in (11) games making (3) starts. In his (18) at-bats he recorded (6) hits and (1) double with a (.333) batting average.

HIGH SCHOOL - Pat played at Corning-Painted Post West and was coached by Matt Birch. Hit .335 as a senior with 15 RBI’s. Pat was a recipient of the Randy Naylor Memorial Scholar- ship. He also lettered in football and bowling.

PERSONAL - Pat is majoring in Sports Man- agement with a Minor in Communications. He is the son of Eddie and Kathleen Leip- old.

HIGH SCHOOL - Korey played two years of varsity baseball at Grand Island. In his two years he helped Grand Island win back-to- back NFL titles. His senior year he was a team captain and hit (.330) as well as being named to the Niagara Frontier League Second Team. His junior year Korey helped Grand Island to a Section VI Championship.

Jordan Wansart Junior Buffalo, NY 10 CSAT HIGH SCHOOL - Jordan played for Coach Joel Reed while play- ing for the Charter School for Applied Technology. Jordan was a two year captain and led his team in wins, strikeouts, shutouts and in- nings pitched his senior year as he was selected to the All Niagara Orleans team both seasons.

PERSONAL - Jordan is a sports management major and is the son of Russell and Lynn Wansart.

22 ○ MEET THE TEAM Zach Machmer Junior Pine City, NY 20 Elmira Southside AS A SOPHMORE (2012) – Zach continued his production on the mound leading the team in in- nings pitched (49), and strikeouts (44). He ap- peared in (11) games starting (8) games. Zach rec- orded (1) save, pitched (3) complete games, and finished with a (7.35) earned run average.

AS A FRESHMAN (2011) - Zach showed flashes of brilliance as a freshman. In his freshman campaign he made (13) appearances, while logging (6) starts. He was second on the team with (43.0) innings pitched and finished the season with a (3-5) record and a (6.28) earned run average. In his first collegiate start (03/06/11), Zach held the eventual Division III National Champion Marietta College to (0) earned runs through (4) innings. In a conference start vs. D'Youville (04/28/11), Zach threw a com- plete game one-hitter, striking out (6).

HIGH SCHOOL - Zach played four years of varsity baseball for Coach Fuchs at Elmira Southside. His senior year he was awarded Player of the Year on his team. He also led his team in wins, earned run average, shutouts and innings pitched. He also lettered in bowl- ing.

PERSONAL - Zach is a Criminal Justice major and is the son of Jon Machmer.

Cory Bukowski Junior Depew, NY 29 Depew BEFORE MEDAILLE— Cory played at Gannon University under Nate Cocolin for a single season. Cory then transferred to Erie Community College under Joe Bauth. In his first career at bat at ECC, Bukowski smacked a homerun. Cory had assisted the team to get JUCO DIII World Series in Tyler, Texas where they placed 4th in the country.

HIGH SCHOOL— Cory played for the Depew High School Wildcats under head coach Jim Ferguson. Since he was a sophomore, Cory played varsity baseball. As a senior, he hit (.527), led the team in RBIs, home runs, and doubles. Cory holds the single season school batting average record at (.527). Cory was named to the ECIC 1st Team.

PERSONAL—Cory is a Sports Management major and is the son of Richard Bukowski and late Julie Bukowski. Jake Tyno Sophomore Amherst, NY 5 Sweet Home AS A FRESHMAN (2012) – Jake appeared in (30) games and started (29) games. He had (15) hits on (76) at bats, (1) double, (8) runs scored, (6) RBIs, and finished the year with a (.197) batting average and (.238) on-base percentage.

HIGH SCHOOL - Jake played at Sweet Home High School for Coach Zgoda. His senior year he was a team captain (alongside fellow sophomore TJ Serba) and was selected to the ECIC II Second Team. That year he batted (.310) with (2) doubles, (1) home run, (6) stolen bases and a (.453) on-base per- centage.

PERSONAL - Jake is an accounting major and is the son of Paul and Karen Tyno.

Chris Montanez Sophomore 8 Buffalo, NY Hutch

AS A FRESHMAN (2012) – Chris appeared in (14) games and started (3) games. He recorded (3) hits on (16) at-bats and (1) RBI. He had a (.188) batting average and a (.235) on-base percentage.

HIGH SCHOOL - Chris played for Coach Jost and the Hutch Tech Engineers. While playing at Hutch Tech, Chris helped his team to (3) Cornell Cup Titles. As a senior, Chris was named a team captain and helped his team to an undefeated regular season (14-0). He also was named to the All-High Sec- ond Team as an infielder.

PERSONAL - Chris is a sports management major and is the son of Samuel and Jackie Montanez.

He had (38) at bats, (16) hits, (1) double and triple, (8) runs scored, and (8) RBIs. He finished the year with a (.421) batting average and (.425) on-base percentage. Zack also made (8) appearances on the mound. He logged in (8.2) in- nings, (5) strikeouts, and finished the year with a (3.12) earned run average.

HIGH SCHOOL - Zack played for the Cleveland Hill Golden Eagles and Coach Pollino. His senior year, he was selected to the ECIC IV Second Team.

TJ Serba Sophomore Tonawanda, NY 11 Sweet Home AS A FRESHMAN (2012) – TJ had a very good freshman year appearing in (20) games and starting in (11) games. He had a (.300) batting average and (.333) on-base percentage. He recorded (40) at-bats, (12) hits, (3) runs, (1) double, and (4) RBIs.

HIGH SCHOOL - TJ played for the Sweet Home Panthers and Coach Zgoda. His senior year, TJ was selected to the ECIC II First Team as an infielder. During that season, TJ was a team captain, with fellow Maverick Jake Tyno, and led his team in runs batted in while posting a (.341) batting average.

PERSONAL - TJ is a psychology major and is the son of Tom and Sue Serba.

Ryan Markiewicz Sophomore West Seneca, NY 12 West Seneca East

HIGH SCHOOL—Ryan played for the West Seneca East Trojans under Sam Sabastion. Ryan played well enough to be named to the 2nd Team ECIC All-Star Teams in both his junior and senior year. Ryan’s senior year his batting average was .425 and he led the team in doubles.

PERSONAL— Ryan is a Sports Management ma- jor and is the son of Bob and Linda Markiewicz.

Ray Burnett Sophomore 17 Harrisburg, PA Harrisburg AS A FRESHMAN (2012) – Ray Appeared in (14) games, starting (1) game. Out of (11) at-bats he recorded (1) hit, (1) RBI, (4) runs, with a (.091) bat- ting average.

HIGH SCHOOL - Ray played for Coach Rogers and the Har- risburg Cougars. In Ray's senior season, he recorded (16) stolen bases. Ray also played for the Harrisburg RBI team. Ray helped the Harrisburg RBI team make it all the way to the RBI World Series which was held at the Minne- sota Twins' Target Field. At the World Series, Harrisburg made it to the championship game before falling in the final. Ray also was a member of the Harrisburg football team.

PERSONAL - Ray is majoring in criminal justice and is the son of Ray Burnett Sr. and Mia Perkins.
