The authors investigated the effect of the Antheraeae pernyi puppae extract on the honey bee, Apis mellifera, the extract having been proposed as a drug (Trokoz et al. Patent of Ukraine ¹ 16965; 1997) possessing rather marked adaptogene properties for many animals (Trokoz et al. 2003). In our laboratory we studied optimal concentrations to be fed to healthy honey bees and the extract effect on these insects artificially infected by a microsporidian, Nosema apis. We have also investigated the effect of optimal extract concentration in natural conditions, these experiments having been carried out with bee colonies inhabited in hives with natural levels of invasive and infective diseases. In laboratory conditions the extract was fed together with sugar syrup (50%), in field experiments with the candy. Three drug concentrations were studied – 0.5, 0.1, and 0 0.01%. In laboratory experiments with bees preliminary infected by the N. apis, the insects were fed by this parasite spores (103 spores/per bee). Control bees were without infection and without extract introduction. Our laboratory experiments were carried out with flying bees taken preliminary to cages and maintained in a thermostat, the temperature and humidity conditions being the optimal. The insects were observed on the every second day. The death factors were determined by microscopic analysis of dead insects. In field conditions the bee colonies were found to be moderately or heavily infected by N. apis (Grobov 1987). Colonies chosen for experiments were genetically similar containing bees with the similar reproductive potencies. Both in experimental and control colonies, 50 insects were taken for microscopic analysis to determine the dynamics of nosematosis level decrease according to the drop of N.apis spore concentration in bees investigated. Our laboratory experiments show the optimal Antheraeae pernyi puppae extract concentration studied is 0.1%. The bees fed by such extract may survive by 8.31 ± 1.51 days (i.e. by 35%) longer comparing to control ones. The use of such extract (0.1%) for artificially diseased bees and healthy ones accelerates the dying out of N.apis-infected insects by 3.5 ± 2.5 days (i.e. by 8.2 %) (P<0.95) comparing to non-treated diseased bees; at the same time the drug introduction to healthy insects makes their life longer by 10.6 ± 2.5 days (P>0.999) (i.e. by 35.6%). According to microscopy data, the main bee death factor is their heavy invasion by the parasite. In natural condition, the use of candy containing the puppae extract (0.1 %) increases significantly the brood development, the number of bees obtained becoming higher by 11,127 ± 9,625 insects (i.e. 35.5%) comparing to the control. Different nosematosis Materia³y z Naukowej Konferencji Pszczelarskiej, Pu³awy 2005 3 effects on bees led to non-significant difference between experimental and control bee groups. According to the microscopy data, the drug introduction led to decreased bee infection by the N. apis in experimental bee groups comparing to control ones; therefore, we observed the stimulating drug effect both on bees and their parasite. This fact confirms the Steche idea (1977) about stimulating bee feeding which increases both brood and nosematosis acceleration. Our data suggest a favorable effect of Antheraeae pernyi puppae extract on healthy bees. Our preparation (0.1 %) might be used to make the bee life longer and to increase their reproductive potencies (Yefimenko et al. 2004; Patent of Ukraine ¹ 68304 À). However, taking the negative drug effect on infected bees, we think this stimulator to be used only in bee colonies free from clinical nosematosis. 1. Patent of Ukraine ¹ 16965.
