October Program Meeting Place

THANK YOU....to all of the members who, last meeting, gave me written suggestions for

First Baptist Church programs they would like to see during the coming year. Your dedicated but slightly memory 17765 Daves Avenue challenged VP/Program Chair will make every effort to incorporate your program suggestions

Los Gatos, CA 95030 and requests into our monthly gatherings. Leading off for October, when the club focus will be on beardless , our own Carl Boro will Next Meeting present a program on "Louisianas...Iris of the Southern Bogs?" Carl proves that this concept is Oct. 5, 2012 not necessarily so, by growing beautiful LAs in his Milpitas backyard, of course, with the able

assistance of wife, Marilyn! Doors open 7:00 P.M. Carl will reveal the secret for successful culture of these beauties during his talk. He also

promises some outstanding photos of Louisianas taken during their frequent trips to the SLI Conventions.

In addition, we will have handouts on the culture of Spuria iris and Siberian Iris. These two classes of the family are excellent for landscape plantings, but are frequently under

used and misunderstood. If you grow these , come prepared to share any information that will help others in the club learn of their attributes and idiosyncrasies.

Philippa Alvis, CBRIS VP New Board Members

Another great program for installing the new officers and directors for Clara B. Rees Iris Society

was held at the September meeting. If you are looking for a job, I suggest that you contact

Carol Dahout as she seems more than capable of job placing after reading the newspaper ads.

Mary Collins was very happy to accept Carol’s recommendations! Although we might all be a

little concerned about the “able-bodied” VP! Thanks, Ladies, on an entertaining event!

Clara B. Rees Meeting Minutes

September 7, 2012

President Mary Collins called the meeting to order at 7:40 and announced that dues are now due at the price of $12.00 per member. At that point she politely asked Carol Dahout to stop reading the paper and to sit down and attend to the

meeting. Carol told her she had found some promising ads in the paper for officer and director positions that needed to be filled for the society. Mary then read job descriptions and Carol called up people that would meet the criteria:

Philippa Alvis - Vice President, Dave Henley - Director, Elaine Fischer – Director (one year),, Alice Clark - Director and Chris Dickinson - Director. Mary Collins will continue as President, Barbara Pesek as Secretary, and Carol Dahout as

treasurer. Mary thanked outgoing Vice President Carolyn Craft and outgoing directors Valda Evans, Chris Dickinson, Helen Bliven, and Peter Marra.

• The budget was passed out and reviewed. It will be printed in the next newsletter and will be voted on at the October

meeting. • The Region 14 Fall Regional will be on October 27th and 28th in Roseville at the Orchid Suites.

• CBRIS will donate a green and blue bath-themed basket prepared by Jane Ann Walters as a fundraiser for Region 14. Donations will be gratefully accepted. Let Mary know what will be donated and bring it to the October meeting.

• Please let Wayne Craft know as soon as possible if there are changes that need to be made to the yearbook. • Tee shirt samples were shown (light green, lavender, grey, and white) as well as the logo for new society shirts.

Thirty-six shirts were ordered by the end of the meeting. • John Pesek made an announcement about wanting to be placed on Region 14’s slate of officers to run for Regional

Vice President. He needs the signatures of 10% of all region 14 members so he passed around a petition to help him reach this goal.

• Mary thanked those who brought refreshments after the break and announced that Georgina Clark was relinquishing her job as refreshment chair so the position needs to be filled.

• Mary introduced new member Munir Kureshi. • She thanked Wayne Craft for making the door prize picture chart. th • The trip to Jim and Colleen Goff’s Elkhorn Garden dahlia farm has been rescheduled to September 15 . • The Society will sell rhizomes at the Prusch Park sale on October 6th. A signup sheet was passed around for sellers. rd The Alvis would like help with digging and labeling at their home on October 3 between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. • Philippa Alvis directed the members to help update the culture sheet that is given out to buyers at our rhizome sales. th • Jane Reiter asked for volunteers to help maintain the iris garden at Guadalupe Gardens on September 8 (9-12) and 9th (10-1). Rhizomes will be dug for the sale at Prusch Park.

The raffle and door prize drawing were held and the meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Barbara Pesek, Secretary

Dahlia Trek

Where did some of the CBRIS club members go on Saturday, September 15th? Three miles inland of Elkhorn Slough- into

Colleen and Jim’s Goff’s dahlia farm. After being greeted by Jim and Colleen, we were entertained by Jeff Freedman singing to

the autoharp. What sweet music! There was wine, soda and water to choose. What a beautiful garden they have. The dahlias were in full bloom and the colors were breath taking! Colleen had us make topiary baskets. What fun! The club thanks Jim and

Colleen Goff for their wonderful hospitality. And, yes, we will come back next year.

My work ethics are of high standards. I am goal directed and rely on established guidelines which everyone follows. Work with all sorts of different and diverse groups and work to fold in all diverse opinions in order to problem solve to meet the

overall goal of the organization. There is no room for self-interest opinions and motion which are contraindicated in maintaining the high standard of the established goal. The goals of an organization must always be the forefront of all

decisions and programs. Objectives to meet these goals are advisable. I would find the Regional VP a challenge and would spend time in achieving goal-directed programs to enhance the

organization. I am not computer oriented and do not intend to spend time and energy to living on a computer.

I will address all emails of important and relative program objectives in a short turnaround time. I will be available by phone and face to face with anyone at any time for discussion and planning. I will not waste time by bickering and being disrespectful to anyone or group of people. These comments are made from my past experience and have nothing to do with

the Iris Society since I am not aware of the inter-dynamics of this organization.

For fun and past time, I have been the Chairman of the Jack London Foundation for the past 25 years. The organization is devoted to the study and works of Jack London. Our emphases are on Jack London Research and an educational component geared toward the reading and writing of our young people in our schools. The members of the Foundation are International and our annual banquet showcases speakers from all parts of the USA and foreign countries. We present an annual “Man-of-the-Year” award at each annual banquet. I have been active in the Santa Rosa Iris Society for more than ten years. I have served as Vice-President for two years. As Vice-President, one of my duties is Program Chair. I co-developed an “Iris for Youth” program in public schools by giving Irises to school gardening programs. I have more than 1000 Bearded Iris, complete collection Dyke Medal winners, and am working collecting all the Nies Award Winners. I actively participate in the annual Iris Show and provide potted plants for the sale. Also I have attended several AIS National Conventions. Committee Involvement: 1. Pharmacy 2. John Pesek’s Biographical Information

I attended Foothill College and then graduated from Arizona State University with a BS degree. When in college I was in the

ROTC program and then served for three years in the United States Army getting out as a captain. I took my army experience to General Motors as an automotive engineer. While employed by General Motors I graduated from Ohlone College with an AA degree in Horticulture. When General Motors closed the assembly I went to work for and retired from New United Motor Manufacturing Inc. in the inspection department.

I have always have had an interest in gardening because my mother had ten green fingers. My interest in iris was sparked when Barbara and I were at a mall and there was an iris show going on. We had several old irises at our house that were there when we moved in and at the show saw some beautiful colors and so we joined AIS and the Clara B. Rees Iris Society on the spot. We now grow 340 varieties of irises from short Standard Dwarf Beardeds, to tall Spurias. I have been hybridizing for a few years but have produced nothing new yet. I am an AIS Garden and Exhibition judge and have given judges’ training to students, apprentices, and judges.

I have been President, Director, Treasurer, and Auditor of the Clara B. Rees Iris society. I have also been Show Chair or Co-

Chair for many Clara B. Rees Iris Society Spring Shows.

Up until now my involvement with Region 14 includes: serving as director, revising the bylaws and standing rules with the parliamentarian, i.e. changing the date of the budget meeting from being held in January to the Fall Regional, being a member and currently Chairperson of the Region 14 Honor Awards Committee, guiding the newest Region 14 affiliate, High Desert Iris Society in Reno, Nevada, with membership, bylaws and standing rules, and obtaining startup money from Region 14.

I have the ability to work with people and get along with them by being sensitive and diplomatic. I work in a systematic and efficient way with an emphasis on planning and execution. I will delegate assignments and follow up with them. I am capable of making rational and informed decisions. I am computer literate and am comfortable in using Word and Excel and email communications. As a meeting leader I keep all involved on task and I will be accountable to the membership as RVP.

Barbara, my wife, has also been active in the region as a G/E Judge and as a Director. She supports my decision to be included on the slate for Region 14 RVP.

My vision for Region 14 is for the region to increase membership through contests.

Included in my vision is encouraging local societies to donate irises to schools, in their areas, while generating and nurturing more youth involvement. The last part of my vision involves enlisting the Region’s hybridizers in becoming more involved in Region 14 activities.

Differentiating Close Irises Anna Cadd

About six months ago, Jim Begley asked me to help ID an iris that his neighbor has growing along his fence. It was an old fashioned purple that blooms the whole year around. Two irises came to mind, ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’ and ‘Crimson King’. Both fit Jim’s description and it is hard to distinguish one from the other. They were introduced 40 years apart and both are older than our parents or even our grandparents; and are still growing in abundance in our gardens and in Europe. Did you know that they both were introduced as IBs? We have ‘Crimson King’ planted in our

Display Garden in the rebloomer bed, and I will try to get ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’ to plant alongside it for comparison. So I tried to find information about both of them to let Jim decide, which one is his neighbor‘s pride!

'Eleanor Roosevelt' (Hans Peter Sass, R. 1933). IB, Mid. bloom season & reblooms; Color Code R1D; Reddish purple self, slight fragrance. 'Amas' X (* X ...) *Possibly Iris lutescens, McDade 1933. References: McDade 1933; National 1933; Ida Mary Pattison, Quality Gardens 1933; 1939; Flower Grower 21:2, 100. March

1934 with illustration; Honorable Mention AIS 1936; Bulletin of the American Iris Society 63: 64, October 1936; Award of Merit AIS 1937; Bulletin of the American Iris Society 66:87. Sept. 1937.

From the Cooley's Gardens catalog for 1937: "Deep flourite purple self, with very rich falls. The opening flower is almost black, and the heavy blue beard tends

to increase the depth of color. This is the leading fall-blooming iris in commerce today, because it increases very fast, is most reliable in flowering habit, and is one of the most beautiful irises in the garden regardless of its

added value as a rebloomer." Said to have a mild fragrance. You can see it at http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view/Ib/IbEleanorRoosevelt

From Anna: -The beard is sort of sparse and more purple than “heavy blue”, tipped bronze. The shoulders are lighter purple with dark purple veins.

‘Crimson King’ - 1893, Barr, IB 22" E & Re. From the Cornell Extension Bulletin 112:

"Color effect an intense violet-purple self. Standards pansy violet, lighter to yellowish claw and wavy along the edge. Falls continga purple, almost velvety in texture. The veining is boldly spaced on whitish outer haft, while

those on Kochii are not so prominent. Its fragrance is good, its color very intense, and its spathe valves deeply tinged. The persistent green foliage is attractive in winter."

Rebloomer. You can see it at: http://wiki.irises.org/bin/view/Ib/IbCrimsonKing

From Anna: - The beard is sort of sparse and it is white, tipped yellow. The shoulders are almost white, with purple veins. This purple iris is one tone more reddish purple than then bluish purple ‘Eleanor Roosevelt’.
