Kurt Vickery Monocot Seed List July 2011 Kurt Vickery Monocot seed list July 2011 Welcome to the 2011 main seed list Producing a seed list on a regular basis, I can now sympathise with the farmers, there always seems like there is something to complain about!, I was supposed to be co‐leading a tour to Syria in April, but with just a few days to go the foreign office advised against travelling there. With some very good work by Ian Green we were able to change flights and instead went just over the border in Turkey, I was very disappointed to say the least that we weren’t able to visit Syria, but Turkey delivered some very memorable moments, we were very lucky to see huge colonies of Iris sari and sprengeri amongst many other treasures. Of course My heart goes out to the innocent victims of the troubles in Syria, and hope that the opportunity to visit will come up again one day. Back home we were having a major heatwave, Abi did an excellent job of collecting Crocus seeds, but had strict instructions not to water (I would probably have given just a drop here and there if I had known). Ian Young in his excellent bulblog, said that he had never known bulbs ‘go back’ so early, me too!, I really don’t think some bulbs coped very well with it, and my Fritillary harvest was definitely affected quite badly Anyway, we did manage to come up with a few items, some of which I hope will be of interest. Special thanks are due to Peter Bird and Filip Seys for donating some really good wild material All seeds are from hand pollinated and /or isolated plants unless otherwise stated w/c means wild collected o.p. means open pollinated Items marked with an * are in short supply Items marked ** are likely to sell out within hours of this list being e‐mailed Numbers in brackets refer to the number of seeds per packet, some of these will be very few, so please pay careful attention before ordering I will update stock levels each Sunday, just e‐mail if you want to know The latest info Prices are £ Sterling I CAN NOT accept non Sterling cheques. Cash is easier for me if paying in Euros or Dollars but overseas customers can pay by STERLING international money order if they prefer. Please make out cheques to K.P.Vickery If sending a cheque you may prefer to endorse it , Not to exceed ’X’ number of pounds, ‘X’ being the anticipated maximum cost of the order, If you do this please leave enough space for me to fill in the actual amount P+P £1.50 UK and EU £3.00 outside EU AMARYLLIDACEAE 1 Acis autumnalis SBL 595 (10) £2.00 2 Acis autumnalis SBL 606 (10) £2.00 Morocco Beni Arouss 3 Acis trichophyllum SBL 603 (10) £3.00 Pink form Morocco S.E.Larache 4 Cooperia pedunculata (10)£2.00 5 Cooperia smallii (10)£2.00 6 Cooperanthes lancasterae (10)£2.00 7 Cooperanthes ‘Mary’ (10)£2.00 8. I. spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht., is one of the the 10 species of Limniris section and grows wildly in Eastern Anatolia. Plant material was collected from Van-Erciş road. Besides the morphological and anatomical investigation; oil content and methyl esters of fatty acids of the seed oils were examined in this study for the first time. Fatty Acid methyl esters were prepared according to the method of Metcalfe et al. (13) from the oil obtained by the Soxhelet apparatus with n-hexane. Analysis of the methyl esters have been carried out with GC-MS. Myristic Acid, Palmitic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Stearic Acid, Oleic and Arachidic Acid were determined as the main fatty acids in the oil. Seeds were rich in Linoleic (40 %) and Oleic Acid (30 %). Key words: Iris spuria subsp. musulmanica, seed, morphology, anatomy, seed oil, fatty acid. Iris spuria L. subsp. musulmanica (Fomin) Takht. BURIED TREASURE Summer 2019 Rannveig Wallis, Llwyn Ifan, Porthyrhyd, Carmarthen, UK. SA32 8BP Email: [email protected] I am still trying unsuccessfully to retire from this enterprise. In order to reduce work, I am sowing fewer seeds and concentrating on selling excess stock which has been repotted in the current year. Some are therefore in quite small numbers. I hope that you find something of interest and order early to avoid any disappointments. Please note that my autumn seed list is included below. This means that seed is fresher and you can sow it earlier. Terms of Business: I can accept payment by either: • Cheque made out to "R Wallis" (n.b. Please do not fill in the amount but add the words “not to exceed £xx” ACROSS THE TOP); • PayPal, please include your email address with the order and wait for an invoice after I dispatch your order; • In cash (Sterling, Euro or US dollar are accepted, in this case I advise using registered mail). Please note that I can only accept orders placed before the end of August. Parcels will be dispatched at the beginning of September. If you are going to be away please let me know so that I can coordinate dispatch. I will not cash your cheque until your order is dispatched. If ordering by email, and following up by post, please ensure that you tick the box on the order form to avoid duplication. Acis autumnalis var pulchella A Moroccan version of this excellent early autumn flowerer. It is quite distinct in the fact that the pedicels and bracts are green rather than maroon as in the type variety.

We have never had so many problems in fitting the range of plants we have “on our books” into the available space! We always try and keep our lists “democratic” and balanced although at times our prejudices show and one or two groups rise to the top. This year we are offering an unprecedented range of calochortus in a multiplicity of sizes, colours and flower shapes from the charming fairy lanterns of C. albidus through to the spectacular, later-flowering mariposas with upward-facing bowl-shaped flowers in a rich tapestry of shades from canary-yellow through to lilac, lavender and purple. Counterpoised to these flashy dandies we are offering an assortment of choice muscari whose quiet charm, softer colours and Tulipa vvedenskyi Tecophilaea cyanocrocus Violacea persistent flowering make them no less effective in the winter and spring garden. Standouts among this group are the deliciously scented duo, M. muscarimi and M. macrocarpum and the striking and little known tassel-hyacith, M. weissii. While it has its devotees, many gardeners are unaware of the qualities of the large and diverse tribe of “onions”, known as alliums.

Glasnik Hrvatskog botaničkog društva 5(1) 2017. Rod Colchicum L. (Colchicaceae) u flori Hrvatske izvorni znanstveni članak / original scientific paper Milenko Milović (Gimnazija Antuna Vrančića, Put Gimnazije 64, Medicinska škola, Ante Šupuka bb, HR-22000 Šibenik, Hrvatska; [email protected]) Milović, M. (2017): Rod Colchicum L. (Colchicaceae) u flori Hrvatske. Glas. Hrvat. bot. druš. 5(1): 20-31.

The species peony collection is also growing and we hope Iris Double Lament Lilium Friso to have sufficient to offer more varieties soon. Things never stand still and one of the consequences of not doing Chelsea is that we no longer need some of the large show plants so this year we are able to offer the evergreen Dianella tasmanica (page 12) with its extraordinary blue berries. Some of our plants did not enjoy the wonderful summer as much as we did but the Schizostylis were an eye opener. They are stream side plants from southern Africa so we think of them as wanting dampish soils but forget that The youngest grandson - but Eucomis pole-evansii is winning! they experience seasonal rainfall and very hot summers. The group met with the leader Paul at Malaga airport, having arrived on various flights from the UK. We made our way from the arrivals hall to the multi-storey car park, where our minibus was waiting. Leaving the airport, we drove west and then north towards Alhaurin de la Torre, stopping in an area of open Pine forest for an early inspection of the local flora, which did not disappoint. Aristolochia baetica (a Birthwort), Teucrium fruticans (Tree Germander), Ophrys tenthredinifera (Sawfly Orchid), Ophrys ciliata (Mirror Orchid) and Phlomis purpurea were all seen. In addition, Spanish Festoon was spotted and Serin was also heard. Moving on, we stopped at the top of a hill, overlooking Malaga, for our picnic, and a Hoopoe flew over as we parked. Great Tit and Blackcap were heard and several more spikes of Ophrys ciliata were found, as well as Ononis natrix (Yellow Restharrow), Gynandriris sisyrinchium (Barbary Nut) and Vinca difformis (Perriwinkle). We continued our journey on through Alhaurin el Grande, Coin and on up to El Burgo, one of the ‘White Villages’, for which Andalucia is famous.
