    Names of Ships from the Hornblower Books. Introduction Hornblower’s biographer, C S Forester, wrote eleven books covering the most active and dramatic episodes of the life of his subject. In addition, he also wrote a Hornblower “Companion” and the so called three “lost” short stories. There were some years and activities in Hornblower’s life that were not written about before the biographer’s death and therefore not recorded. However, the books and stories that were published describe not only what Hornblower did and thought about his life and career but also mentioned in varying levels of detail the people and the ships that he encountered. Hornblower of course served on many ships but also fought with and against them, captured them, sank them or protected them besides just being aware of them. Of all the ships mentioned, a handful of them would have been highly significant for him. The Indefatigable was the ship on which Midshipman and then Acting Lieutenant Hornblower mostly learnt and developed his skills as a seaman and as a fighting man. This learning continued with his experiences on the Renown as a lieutenant. His first commands, apart from prizes taken, were on the Hotspur and the Atropos. Later as a full captain, he took the Lydia round the Horn to the Pacific coast of South America and his first and only captaincy of a ship of the line was on the Sutherland. Forester penned a series of novels around the fictional character Horatio Hornblower, a British naval officer of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Although a fictional character, Forester’s protagonist was written into many historical events and interacted with historical characters. Chief among those was Edward Pellew, 1st Viscount Exmouth, who commanded the British frigate HMSIndefatigable during the early years of the French Revolutionary Wars. Pellew was an exceptional officer in the British Royal Navy, rising to the rank of admiral and holding several lofty commands, including the East Indies Station and the Mediterranean Fleet over fifty years of service. Pellew’s career, as is the case of most celebrated officers, was an exception to the general career arc of most officers in the Royal Navy. ellew was known as a patron of junior officers who had served well under him, accelerating their careers at a time when the British naval officer corps consisted of far more men than the Royal Navy could put into service, and promotion prospects were bleak at best.

    Hammocks: A Maritime Tool by Michele Panico November, 2018 Director of Thesis: Dr. Angela Thompson Major Department: Maritime Studies During the age of sail, sailors slept in hammocks made of canvas, suspended on the gundecks and secured to the beams above. This work seeks to understand the adoption and adaptation of hammocks as a maritime tool on sailing vessels and the subsequent impact and changes their presence caused. The adoption of hammocks onto maritime vessels affected all aspects of life at sea; including alterations to the construction and supplies needed aboard ships, which resulted in monetary impacts. Hammocks allowed for an increase in the number of men aboard vessels, they shaped modifications and improvements in sleeping conditions, and strengthened the divisions in ranks, while also acting as a means of comradery. In addition, hammocks created revisions in rules and regulations. Likewise, they altered forms of protection and defenses. Furthermore, hammocks affected health and hygiene by playing large roles in governing the cleanliness of ships and sailors. They also had various functions in relation to the sickbay, including a key part in burial. Finally, this thesis concludes with the replacement of hammocks by bunks. Ultimately, it evaluates the hammock as a maritime tool that influenced life at sea during the age of sail.     SCENARIOS — 2014 CONTEST 2 SCENARIOS — 2014 CONTEST e are proud to present the winning scenarios of the 2014 Sails of Glory Th e winner in the Fictional category is the scenario “Plundering the Town”, by José Scenario Design Contest. Th ese scenarios are presented in the standard Manuel Moreno Ramos. WSails of Glory format, with all the information you need to play. In the Historical category, there are two winners: “Encounter On A Lee Shore”, by Twenty-six players submitted 35 valid entries to the contest, in two diff erent Eric Johnson, and “A Safe Harbor? – Battle of Algeciras (1801)”, by José Manuel categories (Historical and Fictional), with 19 Historical scenarios and 16 Fictional Moreno Ramos. scenarios submitted.
