60 ZuZana Poláčková; Pieter van Duin Montenegro Old and New: History, Politics, Culture, and the People The authors are focusing on how Montenegro today is coming to terms with the task of becoming a modern European nation, which implies recognition not only of democracy, the rule of law, and so forth, but also of a degree of ‘multiculturalism’, that is recognition of the existence of cultural, ethnic, linguistic and religious minorities in a society that is dominated by a Slavic Orthodox majority. In his context they are analyzing the history of the struggle of the Montenegrin people against a host of foreign invaders – after they had ceased to be invaders themselves – and especially their apparently consistent refusal to accept Ottoman sovereignty over their homeland seemed to make them the most remarkable freedom fighters imaginable and led to the creation of a special Montenegrin image in Europe. This im- age of heroic stubbornness and unique martial bravery was even consciously cultivated in Western and Central Europe from the early nineteenth century onwards, as the Greeks, the Serbs, the Montenegrins and other Balkan peoples began to resist the Ottoman Empire in a more effective way and the force of Romantic nationalism began to influence the whole of Europe, from German historians to British politi- cians, and also including Montenegrin and Serbian poets themselves. And what about the present situa- tion? CHAPTER 1 1 AUSTRALIANS INTO BATTLE : THE AMBUSH AT GEMA S ENERAL Percival had decided before the debacle at Slim River G that the most he could hope to do pending the arrival of further reinforcements at Singapore was to hold Johore. This would involve giving up three rich and well-developed areas—the State of Selangor (includin g Kuala Lumpur, capital of the Federated Malay States), the State of Negr i Sembilan, and the colony of Malacca—but he thought that Kuala Lumpu r could be held until at least the middle of January . He intended that the III Indian Corps should withdraw slowly to a line in Johore stretching from Batu Anam, north-west of Segamat, on the trunk road and railway , to Muar on the west coast, south of Malacca . It should then be respon- sible for the defence of western Johore, leaving the Australians in thei r role as defenders of eastern Johore. General Bennett, however, believing that he might soon be called upo n for assistance on the western front, had instituted on 19th December a series of reconnaissances along the line from Gemas to Muar . By 1st January a plan had formed in his mind to obtain the release of his 22nd Brigade from the Mersing-Jemaluang area and to use it to hold the enem y near Gemas while counter-attacks were made by his 27th Brigade on the Japanese flank and rear in the vicinity of Tampin, on the main road near the border of Malacca and Negri Sembilan . Although he realised tha t further coastal landings were possible, he thought of these in terms of small parties, and considered that the enemy would prefer to press forwar d as he was doing by the trunk road rather than attempt a major movement by coastal roads, despite the fact that the coastal route Malacca-Muar- Batu Pahat offered a short cut to Ayer Hitam, far to his rear . -

The two armoured brigades raised to become part of this new division were the 4th and 5th Indian Armoured Brigades. This brigade was raised at the cavalry depot at Risalpur in India with effect from 1 April 1941 as the 4th Indian Armoured Brigade under the command of Brigadier (Acting) William Thomas GILL, M.C.*. GILL was promoted from command of the 3rd Carabiniers then stationed in India, and was a British officer in the Regular Army. The first unit to join the brigade did not do so until August 1941, this being the 46th Cavalry; itself a newly raised regiment. -

Utilizing light tanks and bicycles, the Japanese swiftly moved through the peninsula's jungles. Though reinforced, Lieutenant General Arthur Percival's command was unable to halt the Japanese and on January 31 withdrew from the peninsula to the island of Singapore. Destroying the causeway between the island and Johore, he prepared to repel the anticipated Japanese landings. Considered a bastion of British strength in the Far Eastit was anticipated that Singapore could hold or at least offer protracted resistance to A History of the First World War Japanese. To defend Singapore, Percival deployed three brigades of Major General Gordon Bennett's 8th Australian division to hold the western part of the island. Advancing to Johore, Yamashita established his headquarters at the Sultan of Johore's palace. Though a prominent target, he correctly anticipated that the British would not attack it for fear of angering the sultan. Utilizing aerial reconnaissance and intelligence gathered from agents that infiltrated the island, he began to form a clear picture of Percival's defensive positions. On February 3, Japanese artillery began hammering targets on Singapore and air attacks against the garrison intensified. British guns, including the city's heavy coastal guns, responded but in the latter case, their armor-piercing rounds proved largely ineffective. -

Please contact them directly if you wish to use their material. 1 Hello All I do not suppose that the global metal market features greatly in Great War journals and magazines, but we know, sometimes to our cost, that the demand from the emerging economies such as Brazil, China and India are forcing prices up, and not only for newly manufactured metals, but also reclaimed metal. There is a downside in that the higher prices are now encouraging some in the criminal fraternity to steal material from a number of sources. To me the most dangerous act of all is to remove railway trackside cabling, surely a fatal accident waiting to happen, while the cost of repair can only be passed onto the hard-pressed passenger in ticket price rises, to go along with the delays experienced. Similarly, the removal of lead from the roofs of buildings can only result in internal damage, the costs, as in the case of the Morecambe Winter Gardens recently, running into many thousands of pounds. Sadly, war memorials have not been totally immune from this form of criminality and, there are not only the costs associated as in the case of lead stolen from church roofs. These thefts frequently cause anguish to the relatives of those who are commemorated on the vanished plaques. But, these war memorial thefts pale into insignificance by comparison with the appalling recent news that Danish and Dutch marine salvage companies have been bringing up components from British submarine and ships sunk during the Great War, with a total loss of some 1,500 officers and men. -

CHAPTER 1 0 MOUNTING DISASTER S HE Japanese forces as a whole were now riding a wave of victories . T In the colony of Hong Kong, which had become a perilously-situate d extremity of British power, the enemy troops continued on 9th December their advance on the Gin Drinkers ' Line. This line, ten and a half miles long, occupied a commanding position on the mainland, but had little depth. Major-General Maltby,' commander of the British troops in China and of the Hong Kong Fortress, estimated that the line might be held fo r seven days or more, but only if there was no strong and capable offensive against it. It was hoped that sufficient delay would be imposed to enable final measures, possible only when war was certain, to be taken for defence of the main stronghold, the island of Hong Kong itself. The island, with an area of thirty-two square miles, is traversed b y an east-west range of steep, conical hills, rising to 1,800 feet at Victori a Peak. The densely-populated city of Victoria occupied principally a flat, narrow strip of land along the north-western shore . Some shelters agains t bombing and shelling had been provided, but for the majority of it s 1,750,000 inhabitants, mostly Chinese, no such protection was available . Its water supply came partly from the mainland, and partly from reservoirs on the island itself . In both respects it was vulnerable to enemy action . Since it was first occupied by the British in 1841, the island had graduated , like Singapore, from earlier use by pirates and fishermen, through increas- ingly lucrative stages, to affluence as a great port and commercial centr e on the main Far Eastern trade route . -
