2019 Spring/ Summer edition A message from the Editor Bonjour chères lectrices et chers lecteurs, I am delighted to introduce our members to the new Board of Directors for 2019-2020. This group of diverse professionals volunteer their time during the day, at night and on weekends to keep this association vibrant, current and serving the needs of their members in regards to FSL and International Languages in Ontario. Our association is proud to have a wonderful team of directors with a variety of teaching experiences, language backgrounds, and great strengths and from all over our province working on our collective behalf. I encourage you, our readers, to enhance your network and broaden your knowledge by actively using your OMLTA membership. Your membership provides you with free access to resources, leadership opportunities and discounted events. We encourage members to support networking and collaboration by contributing their expertise to our Communication; consider submitting ideas, strategies, resources or articles that support the modern language classroom. Also, this year we will be introducing our activity of the month where we welcome members from across the province to submit classroom strategies and tools to be featured on our website. Other exciting initiatives are being planned, so be sure to follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to keep informed. Je suis tellement fière de faire partie d’une équipe si travaillante et positive. Entrez en contact avec vos directrices/directeurs, venez nous connaitre cette année et profitez de votre adhésion. Resource Review Rocketbook https://getrocketbook.com/pages/educators By Marisa Moser Rocketbook. How cool does that sound? This interactive notebook is a great resource for teachers and students! This notebook is reusable and allows for much ease in note taking. With this notebook, students write their notes, teachers take a picture of the work and can easily upload the work to a storage file of their choice (e.g., google drive, e-mail etc.) This is very handy for when students are absent or working at home for extended periods of time. I used it in my classes this year and it was a big success. A timesaver for me and my students. Rocketbook also offers free PDF sheets available on their website. Download the free Rocketbook app on your phone today to try it out! Resource Review www.bookrix.com By: Lisa Picerno Great for International Language Teachers! Students are able to download easy readers, short stories, novels in 25 foreign languages for FREE. Teachers can project the book on screen and analyze the text in large font for all to see. I had some success this year using this free resource with my Grade 11 and 12's in Spanish class. My students were happy to use a free application for reading books but the footnotes on many pages were often not of interest to the students but on the other hand, English is used in the footnotes which they appreciated. I will continue to use this website next year for a variety of authentic written material for my students for free! Auguri! Winner of the Italian Bursary in Sienna Congratulations to OMLTA member Mario Buscemi who is the winner of the Study in Sienna bursary awarded by the Istituto di Cultura in partnership with the OMLTA. Mario is currently employed by the York Catholic District School Board. Mario will study this summer in a program dedicated for foreign teachers of the Italian language. L A N G U A G E C O N T E S T S The 48th Ontario High School German Contest This year, over 30 students from five schools competed at the 48th Annual Ontario High School German Contest at Appleby College in Oakville. The winners in Groups A, B and C are all students of the University of Toronto Schools. The winner of Group D is from the Gary Allan Saturday School. All our winners received cash prizes and gifts donated by our sponsors. Thanks to the generosity of the German Embassy in Ottawa, the German Consulate in Toronto, and the Goethe-Institut, we were also delighted to award trips to Germany to two of our top winners in Group B: Oliver Weizel and Emily Wan, both from the University of Toronto Schools.
