Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract : More than 1100 complete or fragmentary imported vessels in bronze, glass, wood, horn, clay and silver from the first millennium A.D. have been found in Norway, approximately 80% of them in graves. The extensive research already carried out has produced a vast body of literature, which generally keeps within strict chronological boundaries, concentrating on vessels from either the Roman Period, the Migration Period, or the Viking Age. Two main approaches to the material have traditionally been applied: 1) typo logical studies, on the basis of which trade connections and systems have been discussed from different theoretical perspectives, and 2) imports as status markers, from which hierarchical social systems of a general kind have been inferred. Only very rarely have their function as vessels attracted any serious consideration, and even more rarely their actual local context.

  • The St. Olav's Way – the Origin, Nature and Trends in Development of Pilgrimage Activity in Scandinavia
PEREGRINUS CRACOVIENSIS 2016, 27 ( 1 ), 25–45 ISSN 1425–1922 doi: 10.4467/20833105PC.16.002.8903 Tomasz Duda The St. Olav’s Way – the origin, nature and trends in development of pilgrimage activity in Scandinavia Abstract: In the Middle Ages the idea of pilgrimage reached Scandinavia, for a long time regarded as a permanent mainstay of pagan beliefs associated mainly with the traditions and culture of Nordic warriors – the Vikings. The prolonged and filled with many dif- ficulties process of Christianization of northern Europe, over time developed a rapidly growing cult of St. Olav – a warrior, king and martyr of the Christian faith. Over nearly four hundred years, thousands of pilgrims embarked on pilgrimages to the tomb of the saint in Trondheim, making the Nidaros Cathedral the most important pilgrimage center in this part of Europe. In 1997, the first section of the St. Olav’s Way between Oslo and Trondheim was offi- cially re-opened. After it has been signposted, described and promoted, as well as after it has been awarded with the title of European Cultural Route by the European Council in 2010, the St. Olav’s Way has become one of the largest and most important pilgri- mage routes in Europe. The present study is based on preliminary research conducted by the author on the St. Olav’s Way in the last couple of years. Analysis of the available statistical data, as well as the opinions of the trail users themselves and its organizers as obtained by the author through social studies (surveys and direct interviews) allowed, however, to develop some preliminary research on the size and nature of pilgrimage movement along the routes of the St.

  • Danish Royal Ancestry
GRANHOLM GENEALOGY DANISH ROYAL ANCESTRY INTRODUCTION Our Danish ancestry is quite comprehensive as it coves a broad range of the history. This presentation is laid out in three different parts. Three lists are included of our ancestors and of our distant cousins. The lists show just one of several paths between the earliest and the present generation. Additional biographical text is included regarding several ancestors; the lists are highlighted when these persons are referred to in the text. The text is mostly from the Internet Wikipedia source and edited for simplicity. The advantage of this is that this text has a language link so the reader can readily see the information in any other language. The first part has our direct ancestors and begins by the Norse/Danish mythical ancestry from King Skjöldr, the son of Odin. That early Norse mythology is covered in the books about our Swedish and Norwegian ancestry. Odin gave Sweden to his son Yngvi and Denmark to his son Skjöldr. Since then the kings of Sweden were called Ynglings and those of Denmark Skjöldungs (Scyldings). This part blends from the mythical era into the Viking era. The distinction between the two eras cannot be clearly defined, in some cases it is obvious in others it must be left to the imagination. Ragnar Lodebrok was one of the important Vikings, he invaded even Paris. His son Sigurd is the forefather of the Danes, his son Björn of the Swedes. The direct lineage with us ends at the time when the Christianity took hold and replaced the Viking era.

  • A Troll, a Bird, and Mother of Kings Magic and Agency in Shapeshifting Origins and Perspectives: Queen Gunnhildur of Norway
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Medieval Icelandic Studies A Troll, a Bird, and Mother of Kings Magic and agency in shapeshifting origins and perspectives: Queen Gunnhildur of Norway Ritgerð til M.A.-prófs í Medieval Icelandic Studies Cassandra Ruiz Kt.: 180195-4329 Leiðbeinandi: Sif Ríkharðsdóttir January 2020 Abstract The discussion of the Nordic saga corpus has focused mainly on the theoretical analysis of its narrative function, authorship, historical accuracies, and whether they can be viewed as historiographies or not. Until recently, scholars have paid little attention to gender studies and the study of otherness. However, cultural memory remains a pivotal field of study when it comes to sagas. In response, this thesis evaluates how narratives construct gender, otherness, and cultural memory by focusing on a singular character— Queen Gunnhildr. By focusing on family and kings’ sagas, we may gain a different understanding of the cultural views between Icelanders and Norwegians during this time. Nevertheless, it is important to also consider these character depictions to be literary borrowings from the other texts, if they are similar, or that they derive from independent and ultimately oral sources, if they are different. Therefore, I will analyze the different ways Gunnhildr is used as a plot device and how her character morphs in the sagas and is portrayed as either a witch, a sorceress, a woman, an outcast Queen, or other, to shed a light on cultural mentalities of the time they were written; and foreground the uncertainties regarding her origins. Ágrip Umfjöllun um norræna sagnaarfinn hefur einkum lagt áherslu á fræðilega greiningu á frásagnartækni, höfundarétti, sögulegri nákvæmni og hvort hægt séað líta á þær sem sagnfræði.

PREPARER'S NOTE: The "Heimskringla" of Snorri Sturlason is a collection of sagas concerning the various rulers of Norway, from about A.D. 850 to the year A.D. 1177. The Sagas covered in this work are the following: 1. Halfdan the Black Saga 2. Harald Harfager's Saga 3. Hakon the Good's Saga 4. Saga of King Harald Grafeld and of Earl Hakon Son of Sigurd 5. Saga of Hakon Herdebreid ("Hakon the Broad-Shouldered") 15. Magnus Erlingson's Saga While scholars and historians continue to debate the historical accuracy of Sturlason's work, the "Heimskringla" is still considered an important original source for information on the Viking Age, a period which Sturlason covers almost in its entirety. ***************************************************************** PREFACE OF SNORRE STURLASON.
