    An Encapsulation of Óðinn: Religious belief and ritual practice among the Viking Age elite with particular focus upon the practice of ritual hanging 500 -1050 AD A thesis presented in 2015 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian Studies at the University of Aberdeen by Douglas Robert Dutton M.A in History, University of Aberdeen MLitt in Scandinavian Studies, University of Aberdeen Centre for Scandinavian Studies The University of Aberdeen Summary The cult surrounding the complex and core Old Norse deity Óðinn encompasses a barely known group who are further disappearing into the folds of time. This thesis seeks to shed light upon and attempt to understand a motif that appears to be well recognised as central to the worship of this deity but one rarely examined in any depth: the motivations for, the act of and the resulting image surrounding the act of human sacrifice or more specifically, hanging and the hanged body. The cult of Óðinn and its more violent aspects has, with sufficient cause, been a topic carefully set aside for many years after the Second World War. Yet with the ever present march of time, we appear to have reached a point where it has become possible to discuss such topics in the light of modernity. To do so, I adhere largely to a literary studies model, focussing primarily upon eddic and skaldic poetry and the consistent underlying motifs expressed in conjunction with descriptions of this seemingly ritualistic act. To these, I add the study of legal and historical texts, linguistics and contemporary chronicles.

Paul Trio Academic year 2015-2016 135.052 characters Preface The first few months I spent working on this thesis, I knew the mortuary roll of Elisabeth ‘sConincs only by photographs. In November of 2015, I had the opportunity to visit the John Ryland’s Library in Manchester. I was given the rare chance to actually see and touch this well-kept mortuary roll, known there as Latin MS 114. It was a very special moment to be so close to a manuscript that passed through the hands of so many people over 500 years ago. The manuscript is fragile, of course, but the gold used in the illuminations is still shining, and the inscriptions bear the traces of their makers, with ink in different colours, additional lines, corrections and spots. So many handwritings, hundreds of entries, vellum after vellum stitched together, too many to unveil the entire roll that afternoon. But my brief physical encounter gave me a strong and lasting impression of a unique document that holds so much in it: an archaeological object, a work of medieval illustrational art, a collection of Latin handwritings, a devotional object meant to keep the memory of a deceased person alive and to pray for salvation of all souls, an agreement between parties to strengthen mutual bonds.

    HANZESTAD MAASBOMMEL DORP ONTWIKKELINGSPLAN 2019 - 2029 VOORWOORD Het is inmiddels ruim 2 jaar geleden dat de Gemeente West Maas en Waal zich sterk heeft gemaakt om dorpsplatformen in te stellen in de 8 kernen. Doel van het dorpsplatform is het ontwikkelen, verbinden, coördineren en uitvoeren van activiteiten welke de kwaliteit en leefbaarheid kunnen verbeteren. Naar aanleiding van de Visie Leefbaarheid Kernen 2030 heeft de gemeen- te de dorpsplatforms verzocht om samen met een vertegenwoordiging van dorpsbewoners een integraal plan, ofwel toekomst visie uit te werken. Het toenmalige Dorpscomité heeft een gemêleerde groep dorpsbewoners benaderd. Een combinatie van jong en oud, nieuwkomers en ‘geboren en getogen Maasbommelaers’, bewoners van de haven, buitengebied en de dorpskern. Op deze wijze is getracht een representatieve groep samen te stellen die bereid was zich in te spannen om een dorp ontwikkelingsplan, kortweg DOP, op te stellen. Procesbegeleiders van de stichting DKK Gelderland (Dorpshuizen en Kleine Kernen) ondersteunden hierbij. De inspanningen van al deze vrijwilligers over een periode van bijna 2 jaar heeft geresulteerd in het DOP Maasbommel 2019, waarin de inwoners van Maasbommel laten zien hoe zij hun dorp graag zouden zien ontwikkelen in de komende 10 jaar. WOORD VAN DANK De inspanningen van een groep van meer dan 20 belangstellenden welke regelmatig van samenstelling is gewisseld en de kerngroep onder leiding van Gerard Klop en Trees Boerakker hebben geleid tot de totstandkoming van het dorp ontwikkelingsplan Maasbommel. Dit alles heeft plaatsge- vonden onder de deskundige begeleiding van Klaas Westerbeek en Fred Horning van de Stichting DKK Gelderland. En het resultaat mag er zijn! Het is een boeiend document geworden met tal van concrete initiatieven die we kunnen oppakken om het nòg leuker te maken in het dorp.
