Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106-1346 Abstract : More than 1100 complete or fragmentary imported vessels in bronze, glass, wood, horn, clay and silver from the first millennium A.D. have been found in Norway, approximately 80% of them in graves. The extensive research already carried out has produced a vast body of literature, which generally keeps within strict chronological boundaries, concentrating on vessels from either the Roman Period, the Migration Period, or the Viking Age. Two main approaches to the material have traditionally been applied: 1) typo logical studies, on the basis of which trade connections and systems have been discussed from different theoretical perspectives, and 2) imports as status markers, from which hierarchical social systems of a general kind have been inferred. Only very rarely have their function as vessels attracted any serious consideration, and even more rarely their actual local context.

  • PAUL-RĂZVAN ŞERBAN, Ethnical
ETHNICAL STRUCTURE DYNAMICS OF MARAMUREŞ REGION (ROMANIA) PAUL-RĂZVAN ŞERBAN* Key-words: ethnical structure, dynamics, diversity, Maramureş, Romania. Abstract. The ethnical structure of Maramureş is the outcome of an ongoing process that has passed through some important stages connected with the rise and fall of the empires that used to dispute neighbouring territories. Worth recalling is the way in which these empires referred to the religion of conquered populations, or of their allied peoples. Christianity with the Proto-Romanians goes back to the time of Apostle Andrew, it gradually developing until the 8th century, a period in which it became the official religion of the Byzantine Empire (AD 313 – the Edict of Milan), spreading out in the territories inhabited by Romanians. The political pressures of the neighbouring empires of Maramureş ceased after the Second World War and the ethnical groups inside the province would evolved "normally". A significant increase registered the Rroma population, while the other ethnical minorities and the Romanian population are declining through population aging. 1. HISTORICAL CONSIDERATIONS The Christian population of Moldavia and Wallachia was under the protection of the Patriarchate of Constantinople (10th – 19th cc) except for the years 1235–1393, when it was under the guardianship of the Tyrnovo Metropolitan See. Throughout that time, the Transylvanian Christians (inclusive of those in Maramureş) had a distinctively different situation. In AD 732, the iconoclast Byzantine Emperor Leon the Sirian, dissolved the Prima Justiniana Bishopric. Basil the Second (the Bulgaroctone) would Christian the Russians (roundabout the year AD 890) when Vladimir, the Great Knez of Kiev, married Anne, the Emperor’s sister after having helped the Byzantines fight the Bulgarians (Brezeanu, 2005).

  • Viktor Orbán's Hungary: Orbanist Politics and Philosophy from A
Viktor Orbán’s Hungary: Orbanist Politics and Philosophy from a Historical Perspective Gellért Rajcsányi The parliamentary election of 2010 opened a new era in the politics of Hungary. Initially, many were surprised by the introduction of the System of National Cooperation through a declaration1 right after the election, but now, after eight years, one can really see that there is indeed a new era, a new system in Hungary. However, one can discuss2, 3 whether it is really a system of national cooperation or not. Not everyone is capable of creating a new political system or era. To do that, real political talent is needed. Viktor Orbán has political talent. After defeating—or surviving—his earlier political rivals, now, at the young age of 54, he is the grand old statesman of Hungarian politics. It is also not by chance that Mr. Orbán is now a well-known player4 at the European level of politics either. The last hundred years were a historic helter-skelter for the Hungarian nation.5 Thriving years, crisis, collapse, rising from the ruins and ashes—all of these hap- pened to the Hungarians (and to the neighbouring nations) in the 20th century, and not just once. Unlike the Britons or Scandinavians, the people of Central Europe had to start their political and economic system, and their own lives and careers, all over, again and again, even within one generation’s lifetime. Those who wanted to be in politics in these countries had to deal with all the hopes, fears and tensions of these societies that had accumulated in the past century.

  • Hungarian Studies Review
Dynastic Intrigues and Domestic Realities during the Reigns of Andrew I and Bela I Z. J. Kosztolnyik Porro dux Andreas a perturba- cionibus hostiumsecurus effectus in regia civitate Alba regalem coronam est adeptus. Chronicon pictum, c. 86. In the mid-1030s, the cousin of King Stephen I of Hungary, Prince Vazul (the son of Michael, the younger brother of Geza, Stephen's father) conspired to assassinate the elderly and ailing king. The conspiracy was discovered and the king's court had Vazul blinded and his three sons: Levente, Andrew and Bela, banished from the kingdom.1 Next, a new article was added to the recently promulgated Laws of King Stephen (art. ii: 17) regarding conspiracy against king and country. The article pro- claimed that the organizer of such conspiracy may find no refuge in a church. Although this decree shows similarity in concept and wording to the brief entry 5 of the Synod of Mainz (847 a.d.), the phrasing of the Hungarian article is firmer: it outlaws the traitor not only from the community of believers, but from the Church itself. Upon the death of King Stephen in 1038, his nephew, Peter the Orseolo — the son of one of Stephen's sisters, and the favourite of Queen Gisela, Stephen's widow (and the sister of the Holy Roman Emperor, Henry II) — ascended the Hungarian throne. His tyrannical rule (from 1038 to 1041 and from 1044 to 1046) encountered strong opposition. In 1041 Peter fled the realm after which his opponents elected Samuel Aba, the Palatine of the country and husband of Stephen's other sister, as their king.
