The chain of events begins when Garibooli, a young Aboriginal girl, is removed by authorities in 1918, never to be reunited with her family. The subsequent search for identity by the generations of children stemming from Garibooli reveals scars within the Aboriginal community that can never be healed completely. Behrendt cleverly shows this search for identity and belonging in a colonial world by following the children and grandchildren of Garibooli, as Garibooli was made to feel too ashamed to pass on her heritage to her progeny. The numerous characters give human faces and experiences to a highly politicised issue in contemporary Australian society, making Home a solid text in which to explore these issues in the classroom. -

The Working-Class Experience in Contemporary Australian Poetry A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Sarah Attfield BCA (Hons) University of Technology, Sydney August 2007 i Acknowledgements Before the conventional thanking of individuals who have assisted in the writing of this thesis, I want to acknowledge my class background. Completing a PhD is not the usual path for someone who has grown up in public housing and experienced childhood as a welfare dependent. The majority of my cohort from Chingford Hall Estate did not complete school beyond Year 10. As far as I am aware, I am the only one among my Estate peers to have a degree and definitely the only one to have attempted a PhD. Having a tertiary education has set me apart from my peers in many ways, and I no longer live on the Estate (although my mother and old neighbours are still there). But when I go back to visit, my old friends and neighbours are interested in my education and they congratulate me on my achievements. When I explain that I’m writing about people like them – about stories they can relate to, they are pleased. The fact that I can discuss my research with my family, old school friends and neighbours is really important. If they couldn’t understand my work there would be little reason for me to continue. My life has been shaped by my class. It has affected my education, my opportunities and my outlook on life. I don’t look back at the hardship with a fuzzy sense of nostalgia, and I will be forever angry at the class system that held so many of us back, but I am proud of my working-class family, friends and neighbourhood. -

CHAPTER 2 RECREATING THE CIRCLE: RECONSTRUCTING INDIGENOUS WOMANHOOD We can talk about self-government, sovereignty, cultural recovery and the heal- ing path, but we will never achieve any of these things until we take a serious look at the disrespect that characterizes the lives of so many Native women. Kim Anderson, A Recognition of Being: Reconstructing Native Womanhood (14) Closely connected to the ways in which Indigenous feminism is presented in Paula Gunn Allen’s The Sacred Hoop, Lee Maracle’s I Am Woman, and Jackie Huggins’ Sister Girl is the recurring theme of how Indigenous women themselves are de- picted in these texts. This theme unfolds on two levels. There is the personal level, where Allen, Maracle and Huggins present their individual experiences of what it means to be an Indigenous woman in North America and Australia in the second half of the twentieth century. Then, on a larger scale, all three writers also examine the mechanisms of representing Indigenous womanhood, motherhood, and sisterhood that were developed and maintained by the mainstream American, Canadian and Australian settler cultures. In addition, they draw attention to the roles that mothers, grandmothers, sisters, aunts and female ancestors in general play in extended families, tribal communities and kinship structures as well as in reconstructing a positive and functioning sense of femininity. As was suggested in the previous chapter, womanhood and motherhood become an important site of difference for Indigenous women. The governing principles of Indigenous wom- en’s personal non-fiction and life writing in general include, on the one hand, grief over the loss of tribal powers, forcibly separated children, and the denial of motherhood, all resulting in the break-up of traditional family and tribal struc- tures, and on the other hand, the affirmation of female nurturing, maternity and sexuality, including the celebration of female ancestors. -

A Sociology of the Chick Lit of Anita Heiss By Fiannuala Morgan Submitted in total fulfillment of the requirements of Master of Arts (Thesis only) School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne 1 Abstract Wiradjuri woman, Anita Heiss, is arguably one of the first Australian authors of popular fiction. Since 2007, she has published across a diversity of genres including chick lit, contemporary women’s fiction, romance, memoir and children’s literature. A focus on the political characterises her work; and her identity as an author is both supplemented and complemented by her roles as an academic, activist and public intellectual. Heiss has discussed genre as a means of targeting specific audiences that may be less engaged with Indigenous affairs, and positions her novels as educative but not didactic. There remains, however, some ambivalence about the significance of the role that genre plays in her literature as well as for the diverse and differentiated audience that she attracts. The aims of this thesis then are two-fold: firstly, to present a complication of academic conceptions of genre, then to use this discussion to explore the social significance of Heiss’ literature. My focus is Heiss’ first four chick lit novels: Not Meeting Mr Right (2007), Avoiding Mr Right (2008), Manhattan Dreaming (2010) and Paris Dreaming (2011). Scholarship in the field leans toward an understanding that the racial politics of non-white articulations of the chick lit genre are invariably incompatible with the basic formula of chick lit texts. My thesis proposes a methodological shift from the dominant mode of ideological analysis to one that is largely focused on reader response. -

SHELLEY BIELEFELD* I INTRODUCTION Like other colonial countries, Australia has long governed its First Peoples with intrusive paternalism. Paternalistic governance has created ongoing problems for Australia’s First Peoples, also referred to in national discourse as Indigenous peoples and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 1 Such paternalism has created specific difficulties for Indigenous women who have been subject to surveillance and controlled by colonialism in every sphere of their lives. This article will explore some of these forms of surveillance and argue that new forms of paternalism ushered in by ‘the global ascendance of neo- liberal policies and discourses’2 have reproduced similar racialised and gendered impacts for Indigenous women as were apparent in previous policies. Vampires in Transition
VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION Daniel Berjano Rodríguez Utrecht University and Universidad de Granada GEMMA 2016-2018 Supervisor: Adelina Sánchez Espinosa (UGR) Second supervisor: Gianmaria Colpani (UU) July 2018 VAMPIRES IN TRANSITION ABSTRACT In Vampires in Transition, I develop semiotic analyses of two key films of the Spanish transition: Elisa, vida mia (Carlos Saura, 1977) and Arrebato (Ivan Zulueta, 1980). Building off Gilles Deleuze's semiotics (1986, 1989) and Teresa de Lauretis' film theory (1984, 1987) – both drawing on Charles Sanders Peirce (1930-35/1958), I have designed three inter-connected concepts in relation to the vampire figuration: 'vampire-images', 'camera-vampires', and the 'phoenix'. One one hand, these concepts aim to approach the films under study through decolonial and trans-feminist perspectives. On the other hand, they intend to draw meaningful insights on Hispanic film studies in relation to what Donna Haraway calls “informatics of domination” (1991c). Departing from one of the peripheral meanings of the vampire – a male sexual predator, the vampire has been designed as a perverse figuration of structural violence in cybernetic capitalism which could help us understand the relationship between massive addictive habits of digital machines and western patriarchal agendas, as Wendy Huy Kyong Chun studies (2016). Drawing on Teresa de Luretis (1984) and my own trans-faggot experience, vampire-images are designed to give an account of the processes of simulation that work to erase traces of exploitation. They depart from Gilles Deleuze's time-images of modern cinema (1989), which imply irrational cuts caused by particular relinkages of sound and visual data. In addition, as my analysis of Elisa, vida mia attempts to prove, vampire-images involve icons of women as objectified or subordinated to men. -

Introduction Reading Indigenous Women’s Life Writing in Australia and North America: A Twenty-first Century Perspective The main goal of this introductory section is to outline some of the general characteristics of Indigenous women’s life writing 1 in Australia and North America and indicate the motives for a comparative structural and thematic analysis of the chosen narratives. Although it is not my intention to give the impression that Indigenous women’s life writing is a homogenous textual group, I want to foreground certain parallels this genre offers in both regions. These parallels derive first and foremost from the common histories of European invasion of the two continents and the subsequent process of colonization of 1 Throughout this work, I use the term “life writing,” rather than “auto/biography,” to refer to the genre of personal narratives. Generally speaking, I understand the term “auto/biography” as being closely related to the Euroamerican literary tradition which has developed its own theory of auto/biography. I use the term “life writing” as a broader term, which can incorporate auto/biographical accounts, as-told-to auto/biographies, collaborative oral history projects, confessional and trauma narratives, testimonies, as well as collective and communal life narratives. In my view, this term is particularly relevant as it is often positioned as challenging the foundations of Western auto/biography of portraying one’s own or the other’s individual life and self. In Australia, the term “life writing” is used almost exclusively to designate Indigenous women’s life stories, hence the rationale provided by Moreton-Robinson: “The term ‘life-writing’ has been used because Indigenous women’s texts that have been analysed do not fit the usual strict chronological narrative of autobiography, and they are the products of collaborative lives” ( Talkin’ Up to the White Woman 1).
