The chain of events begins when Garibooli, a young Aboriginal girl, is removed by authorities in 1918, never to be reunited with her family. The subsequent search for identity by the generations of children stemming from Garibooli reveals scars within the Aboriginal community that can never be healed completely. Behrendt cleverly shows this search for identity and belonging in a colonial world by following the children and grandchildren of Garibooli, as Garibooli was made to feel too ashamed to pass on her heritage to her progeny. The numerous characters give human faces and experiences to a highly politicised issue in contemporary Australian society, making Home a solid text in which to explore these issues in the classroom.

    "Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella": A study of art and Aboriginality in south east Australia 1900-1980 Sylvia Kleinert A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy of The Australian National University, April 1994. xiv A note on the title The title of my thesis, "Jacky Jacky Was a Smart Young Fella" is a well-known south eastern Aboriginal song. As in any folk tradition, the origins of the song are obscure and wording varies according to time, place and performer. My title follows the version sung in 1961 by Alick Jackomos, a lifelong supporter of Victorian Aborigines and recorded by Alan West, then a curator at the Museum of Victoria. Some performers, including Percy Mumbulla from the south coast and Alick Jackomos attribute the song to the Wallaga Lake community, others, like the Aboriginal singer, Jimmy Little, and the ethnographer, Anna Vroland, favour Lake Tyers. In 1968 Percy Mumbulla claimed Jacky Jacky was a corroboree song taught to him by Sam Drew (Bubela) however the Lake Tyers informants cited by Vroland attribute the English verses to Captain Newman, manager of Lake Tyers station in 1928- 1931 : they maintain the chorus refers to the arrival of steamer traffic between Bairnsdale and Orbost at the turn of the century. The tune, in all cases, resembles the Liverpool song, "Johnny Todd". The song thus selectively incorporates from Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal traditions. Most particularly, "Jacky Jacky" encapsulates the way that south eastern Aborigines accommodated a colonial presence by parodying, and thereby gaining some control over, existing stereotypes. Through this inversion, humour becomes a tactical weapon in a song of political protest played back to the majority culture.

    Trevor Stockley Aboriginal Languages Teacher 18/1/2012 Dear Committee Secretary, I write to you regarding the future directions of the Senate inquiry into the provisions of the Social Security Legislation Amendment Bill 2011, the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory Bill 2011 and the Stronger Futures in the Northern Territory (Consequential and Transitional Provisions) Bill 2011. Summary My concerns are primarily in the areas of Indigenous bi/multilingual education and the future use and health of the unique, intergenerational, Australian Aboriginal languages remaining in the Northern Territory. Of equal concern is the collateral damage, including the crucial loss of trust, caused through Intervention actions by both the Commonwealth and Northern Territory (NT) governments. This is linked with the Aboriginal viewpoint that the Government has failed to conduct a respectful, honest and proper consultation process with NT Aboriginal communities, compounded by the faulty reporting of evaluations in the production of the Stronger Futures policy document. History has shown that allowing the States to set and play out Indigenous policy, has ensured that Indigenous Australians today have - lower levels of good health, higher rates of incarceration in gaols, higher rates of infant mortality and a lower life expectancy than non-Indigenous Australians. This approach has also guaranteed that the majority of Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islanders in Australia no longer speak their Indigenous languages, today speaking English as their first language. We now know the devastating consequences of this loss of language and destruction of culture. Although the Australian government was entrusted by all Australians in the 1967 Referendum with law making powers for Indigenous Australians, it is doing no better than the State and NT governments and possibly, with this obtuse policy, even worse.

Reference was also made to Aboriginal systems of classification, in particular the ways Yolngu people classify painting, including bark painting. Morphy's concept, that Aboriginal art exists in two 'frames', was briefly introduced, and his view was cited that Yolngu artists increasingly operate within both 'frames', the Aboriginal frame and the European frame (Morphy 1991:26). This chapter develops the theme of how indigenous art objects are valued, both within the creator society and when they enter the Western art-culture system. When aesthetic objects move between cultures the values attached to them may change.

    1 Picturing a Golden Age: September and Australian Rules Pauline Marsh, University of Tasmania Abstract: In two Australian coming-of-age feature films, Australian Rules and September, the central young characters hold idyllic notions about friendship and equality that prove to be the keys to transformative on- screen behaviours. Intimate intersubjectivity, deployed in the close relationships between the indigenous and nonindigenous protagonists, generates multiple questions about the value of normalised adult interculturalism. I suggest that the most pointed significance of these films lies in the compromises that the young adults make. As they reach the inevitable moral crisis that awaits them on the cusp of adulthood, despite pressures to abandon their childhood friendships they instead sustain their utopian (golden) visions of the future. It is 1968, rural Western Australia. As we glide along an undulating bitumen road up ahead we see, from a low camera angle, a school bus moving smoothly along the same route. Periodically a smattering of roadside trees filters the sunlight, but for the most part open fields of wheat flank the roadsides and stretch out to the horizon, presenting a grand and golden vista. As we reach the bus, music that has hitherto been a quiet accompaniment swells and in the next moment we are inside the vehicle with a fair-haired teenager. The handsome lad, dressed in a yellow school uniform, is drawing a picture of a boxer in a sketchpad. Another cut takes us back outside again, to an equally magnificent view from the front of the bus. This mesmerising piece of cinema—the opening of September (Peter Carstairs, 2007)— affords a viewer an experience of tranquillity and promise, and is homage to the notion of a golden age of youth.
