MATTHEWS OF THE NEW YORK TIMES Anthony DePalma Working Paper #313 - July 2004 Anthony DePalma was the first foreign correspondent of The New York Times to serve as bureau chief in both Mexico and Canada. His book about North America, Here: A Biography of the New American Continent, was published in the United States and Canada in 2001. During his 17-year tenure with The Times, he has held positions in the Metropolitan, National, Foreign and Business sections of the newspaper, and from 2000 to 2002, he was the first Times international business correspondent to cover North and South America. As a Kellogg fellow in Fall ’03, he conducted research for a book on Fidel Castro, Herbert Matthews, and the impact of media on US foreign policy. The book will be published by Public Affairs in 2005 or early 2006. ABSTRACT Fidel Castro was given up for dead, and his would-be revolution written off, in the months after his disastrous invasion of the Cuban coast in late 1956. Then a New York Times editorial writer named Herbert L. Matthews published one of the great scoops of the 20th century, reporting that not only was Castro alive, but that he was backed by a large and powerful army that was waging a successful guerrilla war against dictator Fulgencio Batista. Matthews, clearly taken by the young rebel’s charms, and sympathetic to his cause, presented a skewed picture. He called Castro a defender of the Cuban constitution, a lover of democracy, and a friend of the American people: the truth as he saw it.

However, reading good literature and watching challenging film versions is often as beneficial as taking a strictly grammatical approach and this will be the aim of the particular class offered. With reference to H.P. Lovecraft's essay "Supernatural Horror in Literature", the class will examine various aspects of the Gothic associated with the work of Edgar Allan Poe and Hammer studios. Beginning with readings from "The Fall of the House of Usher," The Pit and the Pendulum", and other works also available from youtube and public domain, the class will study visual depictions of the Gothic in the 1960s Poe/Roger Corman cycles. Following the Mercury Theatre 1938 production of DRACULA by Orson welles, the class will examine how Hammer Studios reproduced the Gothic in the late 50s and 60s with screenings of THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE REVENGE OF FRANKENSTEIN, THE HORROR OF DRACULA, DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE, TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA, and DR. Chapel Hill 2012 Approved by: Madeleine Grumet James Trier Jeff Greene Lucila Vargas Renee Hobbs © 2012 Cary Gillenwater ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT CARY GILLENWATER: Graphic novels in advanced English/language arts classrooms: A phenomenological case study (Under the direction of Madeleine Grumet) This dissertation is a phenomenological case study of two 12th grade English/language arts (ELA) classrooms where teachers used graphic novels with their advanced students. The primary purpose of this case study was to gain insight into the phenomenon of using graphic novels with these students—a research area that is currently limited. Literature from a variety of disciplines was compared and contrasted with observations, interviews, questionnaires, and structured think-aloud activities for this purpose. The following questions guided the study: (1) What are the prevailing attitudes/opinions held by the ELA teachers who use graphic novels and their students about this medium? (2) What interests do the students have that connect to the phenomenon of comic book/graphic novel reading? (3) How do the teachers and the students make meaning from graphic novels? The findings generally affirmed previous scholarship that the medium of comic books/graphic novels can play a beneficial role in ELA classrooms, encouraging student involvement and ownership of texts and their visual literacy development. The findings also confirmed, however, that teachers must first conceive of literacy as more than just reading and writing phonetic texts if the use of the medium is to be more than just secondary to traditional literacy.

H. White, The Making of the President, 19681 Richard Nixon, like millions of other Americans, enjoyed Florida and the nearby islands of Cuba and the Bahamas as refuges where he could leave behind his many cares and inhibitions. But he also returned again and again to the region as an important ongoing source of political and financial support. In the process, the lax ethics of its shadier operators left its mark on his career. This Sunbelt frontier had long attracted more than its share of sleazy businessmen, promoters, and politicians who shared a get-rich-quick spirit. In Florida, hustlers made quick fortunes selling worthless land to gullible northerners and fleecing vacationers at illegal but wide-open gambling joints. Sheriffs and governors protected bookmakers and casino operators in return for campaign contributions and bribes. In nearby island nations, as described in chapter 4, dictators forged alliances with US mobsters to create havens for offshore gambling and to wield political influence in Washington. Nixon’s Caribbean milieu had roots in the mobster-infested Florida of the 1940s. He was introduced to that circle through banker and real estate investor Bebe Rebozo, lawyer Richard Danner, and Rep. George Smathers. Later this chapter will explore some of the diverse connections of this group by following the activities of Danner during the 1968 presidential campaign, as they touched on Nixon’s financial and political ties to Howard Hughes, the South Florida crime organization of Santo Trafficante, and mobbed-up hotels and casinos in Las Vegas and Miami.

Lights and Shadows in George Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia PAUL PRESTON London School of Economics Despite its misleading title, Orwell’s Homage to Catalonia is almost certainly the most sold and most read book about the Spanish Civil War. It is a vivid and well-written account of some fragments of the war by an acute witness.

Dressed in the style of the early 19th century, they remained totally impervious to the appraising stares of approximately 750,000 persons. —Time Magazine, January 2, 19281 In 1927, an unusual contest seized the attention of the American public. Oklahoma oil magnate E. W. Marland, inspired to commemorate the role of women on the American frontier, set aside more than $300,000 for the eventual erection of a monument in his hometown of Ponca City and invited prominent sculptors to submit appropriate designs. Over the next several months, twelve miniature bronze casts based on those designs were exhibited in major cities throughout the U.S., drawing tens of thousands of visitors who were invited to share their opinions via formal ballot. Although Marland retained the right to make the final decision, art critics, cultural commentators, and ordinary citizens nonetheless engaged in robust debate about the suitability of each of the models and, by extension, the symbolic parameters for an iconic female of the frontier.
