Notes on the Teaching of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Ca’ Foscari, from 1950 to Today Dario Miccoli (Università Ca’ Foscari Venezia, Italia) Abstract The teaching of Hebrew at Ca’ Foscari officially began in 1965, under the guidance of Franco Michelini Tocci and continued until today thanks to researchers and professors specialised in Bible Studies, as well as modern Hebrew, Israeli culture and Jewish Studies more generally. Earlier than that, the early ’50s had seen the birth of a short-lived Hebrew lettorato taught by two rabbis, Elio Toaff and Leone Leoni, thanks to an agreement betweenCa’ Foscari and the Union of the Ital- ian Jewish Communities. Basing upon archival documents and interviews with some of the people involved, this essay aims to reconstruct the development of the teaching of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Venice, contextualising it within the history of Italian Orientalism and that of the Jews of Italy in the period that goes from 1950 to today. RESISTANCE TO THE CENSORSHIP OF HISTORICAL THOUGHT IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY1 Antoon De Baets University of Groningen, the Netherlands Abstract—This paper attempts to demonstrate that many historians have resisted the censorship of historical thought, either inside or outside tyrannical regimes, throughout the twentieth century. Those who actively struggled against persecution were either directly threatened and resisted the threat, or less personally involved but fighting for the cause of history, academic freedom and human rights. A third group, frequently in the background, consisted of all the outsiders who attempted to maintain solidarity with their persecuted colleagues. In addition, historians, in a unique professional reflex, are able to supplement contemporary resistance with retroactive resistan- ce. They possess the power to reopen cases and challenge the rulers' amnesia and falsification of history. The first group of historians were those directly affected by repression. Historians in prison taught history to their fellow inmates or were able to do some historical research. Outside prison, some historians engaged in clandestine activities such as publishing their work in the samizdat circuit, teaching at flying universities, or illegally gaining access to closed archives. Others defied likely censorship by refuting the cherished historical myths that supported the powers that be, or by uttering the unmentionable with historical metaphors. A minority adopted methods of open resistance. Some bravely refused to take loyalty oaths, and were dismissed. -

With a specific focus on Richard Brinsley Peake’s 1823 gothic melodrama, Presumption; or, The Fate of Frankenstein I unpack how the novel’s cross-medium adaptation leads to a changed conception of the relationship of its central characters. In Frankenstein, Victor is the focal figure and acts as the Creature’s dominant counterpart. However, the characters’ cross-medium adaptation from page to stage inverts this Doppelgänger relationship from Shelley’s initial conception in the novel. -

He had a transit visa to “Belgium-France”, bearing the date 24 February 1947 1. He had obtained the visa at the General Consulate of Great Britain in Istanbul, Galata. The British clerk crossed out with his pen “valid for one day” and wrote “one month”. Ghi ță Ionescu had to hurry. On 22 March 1947, his diplomatic passport was set to expire 2. He had its validity extended by the chargé d'affaires at the Romanian legation in Ankara. He had just been recalled by Alexandru Cretzianu, Romania's Minister Plenipotentiary in Turkey. Shortly after, a new ambassador to Ankara was appointed, convenient to the Petru Groza government, which was dominated by communists. Most likely, his chances of carrying on as economic adviser at the Romanian legation in Turkey's capital, and therefore of having his passport renewed, were rather slim, and the political events in Bucharest did not inspire optimism, since Ghi ță Ionescu made meticulous preparations to head over the the West. -

QUEST N. 8 – FOCUS From Odessa to Florence: Elena Comparetti Raffalovich. A Jewish Russian Woman in Nineteenth-Century Italy by Asher Salah Elena Comparetti Raffalovich (1842-1918) 68 Asher Salah Abstract In the nineteenth and the first half of the twentieth century, Italy held a strong appeal for Russian travelers. Several of these Russian émigrés were women of Jewish lineage, who had come with their families or were sent abroad on their own in order to complete their education at one of the newborn kingdom’s prestigious universities. Elena Raffalovich (Odessa 1842 – Florence 1918) is one of the earliest and most intriguing examples of this phenomenon. While her intellectual trajectory, as a pioneer in children’s education and an advocate of women’s rights, is representative of that of many other Russian Jewish women living in Italy at that time, it also challenges a number of historiographic commonplaces about Jewish women and their emancipation process in nineteenth-century Europe. Romantic Medicine and the Poetics of Palliation by Brittany Pladek A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto © Copyright by Brittany Pladek (2013) Romantic Medicine and the Poetics of Palliation Brittany Pladek Doctor of Philosophy Department of English University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This study uses the interdisciplinary lens of Romantic medical ethics to reconsider received ideas about the therapeutic power of Romantic poetry. Studies of literature and medicine in the long nineteenth century have generally considered disease the era’s main medical symbol; they have likewise considered holistic “healing” its major model for poetry’s therapeutic effect, following Geoffrey Hartman’s description of Wordsworth’s ability to “heal the wound of self.” Without denying the importance of these paradigms, my work explores alternate foci: pain instead of disease, and palliation instead of healing. In Britain, professional medical ethics were first codified during the Romantic period in response to a variety of medical and social advances. But because of Romantic medicine’s curative uncertainty and utilitarian intolerance for pain, its ethicists turned from cure to palliation to describe a doctor’s primary duty toward his patients. My study argues that this palliative ethic was taken up by Romantic literary writers to describe their own work. By engaging with contemporary medical ethics treatises such as John Gregory’s 1770 Lectures on the Duties and Qualifications of a Physician and Thomas Percival’s 1803 Medical Ethics, I explore four Romantic authors’ struggle to find an appropriate medical model for their work’s therapeutic benefits.
