Summary Arguments for the monophyly of Hipparchia (sensu Kudrna, 1977) and Parahipparchia are discussed : the latter taxon consists of one superspecies and two species groups. The Hipparchia semele group is characterized by two synapomorphies, including the (potential) presence of a sphragis at the end of the abdomen of the female when mated. The present study deals in particular with the other two entities, viz. superspecies Hipparchia azorina and the Hipparchia aristaeus group. Superspecies H azorina is endemic to the Azores and consists of two semispecies, viz. H. (azorina) azorina and H. (azorina) miguelensis ; the former taxon consists of two subspecies, azorina (Pico and Faial) and occidentalis (Flores, Corvo, Säo Jorge and Terceira). H (azorina) miguelensis is limited to the island of Säo Miguel. The nominal taxa Hipparchia azorina cenjonatura Bivar de Sousa, 1982, Hipparchia azorina jorgense Oehmig, 1983, Hipparchia azorina barbara Bivar de Sousa, 1985 and Hipparchia azorina minima Bivar de Sousa, 1985 are newly synonymized with Hipparchia (azorina) azorina occidentalis Bivar de Sousa, 1982 ; this arrangement differs from the previous ones mainly in that occidentalis appears to occur not only on the western island group, but also on part of the central island group. The Hipparchia aristaeus group is composed of four taxa, viz. H. maderensis (Madeira), H. algirica (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia), H. aristaeus (Corsica, Sardinia, Elba, Giglio, Capraia) and H senthes (Sicily, S. Italy, Albania, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, S. Bulgaria, Greece including the Aegean islands, western half of Turkey). The following taxa are newly synonymized with Hipparchia senthes (Fruhstorfer, 1908) : Satyrus semele blachieri Fruhstorfer, 1908, Satyrus Semele race Siciliana Oberthür, 1914, Satyrus semele L. f. neapolitana Stauder, 1921, Hipparchia algirica vallettai de Lattin, 1952, Hipparchia algirica vallettai Valletta, 1972 and Hipparchia ballettoi Kudrna, 1984. Lectotypes are designated for Satyrus Semele race Siciliana Oberthür, 1914, Satyrus semele L. f. neapolitana Stauder, 1921 and Satyrus semele L. f. blachierioides Stauder, 1921. The latter taxon appears to be identical with Hipparchia semele (Linnaeus, 1758) and the synonymy established by Kudrna (1977) is thus confirmed. A list of characters that could be useful for the construction of a cladogram of Parahipparchia is presented : sixteen characters are retained and a series of characters previously listed by Balletto et al. (1990) is critically reviewed. The monophyly of the superspecies single synapomorphy has H azorina is well supported ; conversely, not a been detected for the H aristaeus group, that could thus very well be a paraphyletic assemblage, either with or without the inclusion of the superspecies H azorina. Priorities for further study are formulated : on one hand a comparative morphological study of all taxa (including early stages and adults) of Parahipparchia and Hipparchia s. str., on the other hand a comprehensive study of molecular and allozyme data as an independent test of the phylogeny based on the morphological data set, as well as a means of estimating the possible divergence time of these taxa. Zusammenfassung Argumente für die Monophylie von Hipparchia (sensu Kudrna, 1977) und Parahipparchia, die eine Superspezies und zwei Artengruppen umfaßt, werden diskutiert. Die Hipparchia semele Artengruppe ist durch zwei Synapomorphien gekennzeichnet, darunter die Ausbildung einer Sphragis am Abdomenende von verpaarten Weibchen. Die vorliegende Arbeit widmet sich besonders den zwei anderen Gruppen, der Superspezies Hipparchia azorina und der Hip- parchia aristaeus Artengruppe. Die Superspezies H. azorina ist endemisch für die Azoren und umfaßt zwei Semispezies, H. (azorina) azorina und H. (azorina) miguelensis. H. azorina enthält zwei Unterarten, azorina (Pico und Faial) und occidentalis (Flores, Corvo, Säo Jorge und Terceira). H (azorina) miguelensis ist auf die Insel Säo Miguel beschränkt. Die nominellen Taxa Hipparchia azorina cenjonatura Bivar de Sousa, 1982, Hipparchia azorina jorgense Oehmig, 1983, Hipparchia azorina barbara Bivar de Sousa, 1985 und Hipparchia azorina minima Bivar de Sousa, 1985 werden mit Hipparchia (azorina) azorina occidentalis Bivar de Sousa, 1982 synonymisiert. Diese Anordnung unterscheidet sich von bisherigen Klassifikationen darin, daß occidentalis nunmehr nicht nur auf der westlichen sondern auch der zentralen Inselgruppe vorkommt. Die Hipparchia aristaeus Artengruppe besteht aus vier Arten, H maderensis (Madeira), H algirica (Marokko, Algerien, Tunesien), H aristaeus (Korsika, Sardinien, Elba, Giglio, Capraia) und H senthes (Sizilien, Süd-Italien, Albanien, ehem. jugoslawische Republik Mazedonien, Süd-Bulgarien, Griechenland inklusive der aegeischen Inseln, westliche Türkei). Die folgenden Taxa werden mit H senthes (Fruhstorfer, 1908) synonymisiert : Satyrus semele blachieri Fruhstorfer, 1908, Satyrus Semele race Siciliana Oberthür, 1914, Satyrus semele L. f. neapolitana Stauder, 1921, Hipparchia algirica vallettai de Lattin, 1952, Hipparchia algirica vallettai Valletta, 1972 und Hipparchia ballettoi Kudrna, 1984. Das letztgenannte Taxon ist Hipparchia semele (Linnaeus, 1758) sehr ähnlich und die von Kudrna (1977) festgestellte Synonymie wird bestätigt. Alle behandelten Taxa werden detailliert beschrieben und ihre Verbreitung, Phänologie und bisherige taxonomische Stellung ausführlich dargestellt, sowie einige nomen- klatorische Probleme diskutiert. Merkmale, die für die Erstellung eines Kladogramms von Parahipparchia nützlich/ verwendbar sein können, werden aufgelistet, wobei 16 Merkmale vorgeschlagen werden und einige von Balletto et al. (1990) kritisch überprüft werden. Die Monophylie der Superspezies H. azorina is gut begründet, aber für die H. aristaeus Artengruppe konnte keine einzige Synapomorphie ermittelt werden. Es könnte sich hierbei um ein Paraphylum handeln, entweder mit oder ohne Einschluss der Superspezies H. azorina. Für künftige Untersuchungen werden folgende Prioritäten for- muliert : Einerseits vergleichend morphologische Untersuchungen sowohl an Imagines wie Präimaginalstadien aller Taxa von Parahipparchia und Hippar- chia s. str., andererseits umfassende molekulare und enzymelektrophoretische Studien, mit Hilfe deren Daten ein unabhängiger Test der auf morphologischer Grundlage gewonnenen phylogenetischen Hypothesen möglich ist und die außerdem Anhaltspunkte zur Abschätzung des evolutionären Alters dieser Taxa bieten. Résumé Le caractère monophylétique de Hipparchia (sensu Kudrna, 1977) et de Parahipparchia est discuté : ce dernier taxon est composé d'une super-espèce et de deux groupes d'espèces. Le groupe de Hipparchia semele peut être identifié à l'aide de deux synapomorphies, incluant la présence (potentielle) d'un sphragis à l'extrémité de l'abdomen de la femelle fécondée. La présente étude traite en particulier des deux autres entités, à savoir la super-espèce Hipparchia azorina et le groupe d'espèces de Hipparchia aristaeus. La super- espèce H. azorina est endémique aux Açores et consiste de deux semi-espèces, à savoir H. (azorina) azorina et H. (azorina) miguelensis ; le premier taxon inclue deux sous-espèces, azorina (Pico et Faial) et occidentalis (Flores, Corvo, Säo Jorge et Terceira). H. (azorina) miguelensis est limité à l'île de Sao Miguel. Les taxons nominaux Hipparchia azorina cenjonatura Bivar de Sousa, 1982, Hipparchia azorina jorgense Oehmig, 1983, Hipparchia azorina barbara Bivar de Sousa, 1985 et Hipparchia azorina minima Bivar de Sousa, 1985 sont nouvellement établis comme synonymes de Hipparchia (azorina) azorina occidentalis Bivar de Sousa, 1982 ; cet arrangement diffère des précédents principalement par le fait qu'il est démontré que occidentalis n'est pas limité au groupe d'îles occidental, mais occupe également une partie du groupe d'îles central. This study is the first to characterize immune variation at the Major Histocompatibility complex (MHC) in grayling. The MHC is a marker of high ecological relevance, because of the strong association between immunity and fitness. Taking advantage of advances in sequencing technology, an analytical pipeline optimized for high-throughput, efficient and accurate genotyping of multi-gene families in non-model species is presented. Immune genetic variation is compared to neutral marker data. Results confirm the hypothesis that neutral marker variation does not predict immune genetic variation. Further, the possible effect of supplementing wild populations with hatchery-reared fish on immune genetic variation is evaluated. Significantly lower estimates of heterozygosity were found in stocked than purely native populations. Lower differentiation at immune genes than at neutral markers are indicative of the effects of balancing selection acting upon the MHC, within purely native, but not stocked populations. Furthermore species distribution modelling is used to identify environmental parameters shaping the distribution of grayling. To evaluate risks imposed by climate change, the sensitivity of grayling to climatic variables and range changes under predicted future scenarios are assessed.

In this Newsletter there are two reports of successful trips by EIG members to Mount Chelmos in Greece (Page 9 & 10) and to Hungary (Page 11,12 & 13). These activities are beginning to influence local National Parks and it was encouraging to hear that grazing has resumed in the Latrany Valley in Hungary something that the West Midlands group that went to Hungary in 2006 recommended. It was this group that formed EIG. We are able to organize activities in Europe only if we don’t fall foul of the 1991 EU Travel Directive and the 1993 EU Package Travel Directive. This means for all EIG trips we have to either use a travel company such as Ecotours or book our own flights and accommodation as we did in Greece or to travel independently and meet up at the arranged site as we did in the Ecrins last year. There is however an insurance issue outstanding, which would cover BC from, claims from anyone participating in the same way as they are covered by BC’s insurance for a field event or work party in the UK.

Résumé : Les études de phylogénie moléculaire sur les Lépidoptères Rhopalocères et Zygènes sont de plus en plus nombreuses ces dernières années modifiant la systématique et la taxinomie de ces deux groupes. Une mise à jour complète est réalisée dans ce travail. Un cadre décisionnel a été élaboré pour les niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifique avec une approche intégrative de la taxinomie. Ce cadre intégre notamment un aspect biogéographique en tenant compte des zones-refuges potentielles pour les espèces au cours du dernier maximum glaciaire. Cette démarche permet d’avoir une approche homogène pour le classement des taxa aux niveaux spécifiques et infra-spécifiques. Les conséquences pour l’acquisition des données dans le cadre d’un inventaire national sont développées. Summary : Studies on molecular phylogenies of Butterflies and Burnets have been increasingly frequent in the recent years, changing the systematics and taxonomy of these two groups. A full update has been performed in this work.

England ** School of Biological and Molecular Sciences, Oxford Brookes University, Headinpon, Oxford 0x3 OBP, England (l) Summary Samples of the endemic Canary grayling butterfly, Hipparchia (Pseudoter- gumia) wyssii (Christ, 1889), were obtained from al1 five of the Canary Islands where it occurs. Each island population comprises a distinct subspecies but the differences between thern are quantitative rather than qualitative ; hence a systern is devised by which elernents of the wing pattern are scored to permit quantitative analysis. The results demonstrate significant inter-island differences in wing size and wing pattern. The underside of the hindwing shows the greatest degree of inter-island vanation. This is the only wing surface that is always visible in a resting butterfly ; its coloration is highly cryptic and it is suggested that the pattern was evolved in response to selection by predators long before H. wyssii or its ancestors reached the Canaries. Subsequent evolution of the details of the wing pattern differed frorn island to island because each island population was probably founded by few individuals with only a fraction of the genetic diversity of the species. It is postulated that the basic “grayling” wing pattern is determined by natural selection, but the precise expression of this pattern on each island is circumscnbed by the limited gene pool of the original founders.

ABSTRACT : The work presented here focuses on the inter-annual variability of annual rainfall in Northern Algeria. This work is carried out by using the coefficient of variation (the ratio between the standard deviation and the average). We will try to show areas of low, medium and high variations in Northern Algeria. In order to do this, we use 333 rainfall stations spread over the entire study area, with a measurement period of 37 years (1968/2004). The contrast of rainfall spatial and temporal distribution has been demonstrated by studying the sixteen basins, as adopted by the National Agency of Water Resources. The high spatial variability characterizes the basins of the High Plateaus of Constantine and Chot El Hodna.     The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators.
