92. D ESCRIPTIVE CATALOGUE: NYMPHALIDAE FAMILY Great Banded Grayling Kanetisa circe (fabricius, 1775) Wingspan: From 5.5 to 6.8 cm. Closed wings: They are brown DESCRIPTION mottled with dark and grey colours. There is a black eyespot on the forewing with a white centre partly outlined in white as well. The hindwing has a wide white stripe which crosses it completely, while another stripe stretches up to its middle. There is a zigzag line parallel to the outer margin. Open wings: They hardly ever show the inner part of their wings. They are dark brown with white spots on the forewings, and a wide stretch on the hindwings. There is a dark eyespot on the forewing. There is no white stripe close to the wing base on the hindwing, and the main stripe is wider. The line which is parallel to the outer margin is wavy not zigzag. Graying: There is an eyespot on the forewing, which is outlined in light yellow. The white stripe on the hindwing is narrower, less prominent and broken at the front margin. Rock Grayling Graying The only one generation of these butterfl ies fl ies from June to the end of July. It lives in mountainous areas, in sparse woodland with large surfaces of grassland, where their caterpillars’’ foodplants, such as grasses from Festuca, Elymus and Brachypodium genera can be found. -

KALINOWSKI Department of Ecology, Montana State University, Post Office Box 172460, Bozeman, Montana 59717, USA Abstract.—The fluvial Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus is restricted to less than 5% of its native range in the contiguous United States and was relisted as a category 3 candidate species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2010. Although fluvial Arctic grayling of the lower Gibbon River, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, were considered to have been extirpated by 1935, anglers and biologists have continued to report catching low numbers of Arctic grayling in the river. Our goal was to determine whether a viable population of fluvial Arctic grayling persisted in the Gibbon River or whether the fish caught in the river were downstream emigrants from lacustrine populations in headwater lakes. We addressed this goal by determining relative abundances, sources, and evidence for successful spawning of Arctic grayling in the Gibbon River. -

Priority Species in UK Biodiversity Action Plan. 2005-9 • 1 sighting • 2-9 max seen • 10-29 records (601 squares) Cryptic colouring provides the Grayling with excellent ° 1995-9 camouflage, making it difficult to see when at rest on bare + 1970-82 ground, tree trunks or rocks. The wings are kept closed when not in flight and the forewings are usually tucked behind the hindwings, concealing the eyespots and making the butterfly appear smaller. In flight this is a distinctive, large butterfly with a strong looping and gliding flight, during which the paler bands on the upperwings are visible. Grayling regulate their temperature, leaning sideways-on to the sun when it is too cold and perching on tiptoes head to the sun when it is too hot. The Grayling is widespread on the coast and southern heaths, but is declining in many areas, particularly inland. Life cycle Foodplants There is one generation a year and the butterfly is usually on the wing from early The main foodplants include Sheep’s-fescue July into September. Apiosoma piscicola, Epistylis lwoffi, Gyrodactylus derjavini were the representative ectobiont species on fish examined. Greater ectobiont richness was observed in April in Poblacnica River. Keywords: wild salmonids, ectobionts, Serbia. 1. INTRODUCTION Up to now, investigations of ectobionts, including parasitic organisms, were not accomplished on the salmonids in Serbia. Parasitic investigations have been done on fish species from eight hill- mountanious watercourses, two lakes and one salmonid fishpond of Sjenicko-Pesterska plateau (Uvac River Basin, south-west region of Serbia) (Cakic, 1992). Also, studies of freshwater fish ectoparasites in lakes of Homolje area have been performed (Nikolic and Simonovic 2002; Nikolic et al. 2006). Health condition of salmonid populations from Serbian waters, graylings above all, has become very important for the past few decades because constructing hydropower objects, reinforced catch and inadequate protection may lead to moving of distribution boundaries in Europe (Jankovic, 2010). -

Journal of Wildlife and Biodiversity, 5(2), 99-102. doi: 10.22120/jwb.2020.132128.1173 Abstract During 2007-2018, a total of 451 specimens of the European grayling Thymallus thymallus from drainage basins of the Neva River, Onega River, Severnaya Dvina River, Pechora River, and the upper Volga River were collected by angling, electrofishing, gill netting, and seine netting. According to the results of the analysis of length-weight relationships, the regression parameter b ranged from 2.83 to 3.25, indicating shifts of the growth pattern, from negative-allometric to positive-allometric. The values of the coefficient of determination were greater than or equal to 0.97. The results of this study are useful for grayling’s stock management and conservation efforts in the region. Revisiting the mitogenomic phylogeny of Salmoninae: new insights thanks to recent sequencing advances Jose L. Horreo Department of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology, National Museum of Natural Sciences (CSIC), Madrid, Spain ABSTRACT The phylogeny of the Salmonidae family, the only living one of the Order Salmoni- formes, remains still unclear because of several reasons. Such reasons include insuf- ficient taxon sampling and/or DNA information. The use of complete mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomics) could provide some light on it, but despite the high number of mitogenomes of species belonging to this family published during last years, an integrative work containing all this information has not been done. In this work, the phylogeny of 46 Salmonidae species was inferred from their mitogenomic sequences. Results include a Bayesian molecular-dated phylogenetic tree with very high statistical support showing Coregoninae and Salmoninae as sister subfamilies, as well as several new phylogenetic relationships among species and genus of the family. All these findings contribute to improve our understanding of the Salmonidae systematics and could have consequences on related evolutionary studies, as well as highlight the importance of revisiting phylogenies with integrative studies.
