Associate, Department of Zoology - Insects Field Museum of Natural History 1400 South Lake Shore Drive Chicago, Illinois 60605 Telephone (708) 485 7358 home (312) 665 7016 museum Email jwdw440(q-), m indsprinq .co m > home wagner@,fmnh .orq> museum Abstract: From May 10, 2002 through September 13, 2002, eight field trips were made to the Harbor at Waukegan, Illinois to survey the beach - dunes and swales for Odonata [dragonfly], Lepidoptera [butterfly] and Coleoptera [beetles] faunas between Midwest Generation Plant on the North and the Outboard Marine Corporation ditch at the South . Eight species of Dragonflies, fourteen species of Butterflies, and eighteen species of beetles are identified . No threatened or endangered species were found in this survey during twenty-four hours of field observations . The area is undoubtedly home to many more species than those listed in this report. Of note, the endangered Karner Blue butterfly, Lycaeides melissa samuelis Nabakov was not seen even though it has been reported from Illinois Beach State Park, Lake County . The larval food plant, Lupinus perennis, for the blue was not observed at Waukegan. The limestone seeps habitat of the endangered Hines Emerald dragonfly, Somatochlora hineana, is not part of the ecology here . One surprise is the. breeding population of Buckeye butterflies, Junonia coenid (Hubner) which may be feeding on Purple Loosestrife . The specimens collected in this study are deposited in the insect collection at the Field Museum . -

We explore the influence of each gene region on the support given to each node of the most parsimonious tree derived from a combined analysis of all three genes using Partitioned Bremer Support. We also explore the influence of assuming equal weights for all characters in the combined analysis by investigating the stability of clades to different transition/transversion weighting schemes. The Genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry
The genus Acraea (Lepidoptera : Nymphalidae) - Peter Hendry With the recent migration to Australia of the Tawny Coster (Acraea terpsicore (Linnaeus, 1758)), (see Creature Feature this issue), I thought it might be timely to take a look at the genus worldwide. It must be noted that due to a misidentification A. terpsicore had long been known as A. violae and many references in the literature and on the web refer to it as A. violae. As with much of the Lepidoptera the genus is in a state of flux, and has long been split into the subgenera Acraea (Acraea) and Acraea (Actinote). The genus is placed in the tribe Acraeini and until Harvey (1991) placed it in the subfamily Heliconiinae it was listed in the subfamily Acraeinae. Recent molecular work has made changes and a current listing of the tribe Acraeini, by Niklas Wahlberg, is available at http://www.nymphalidae.net/Classification/Acraeini.htm. It shows members of the old subgenus Acraea (Actinote) being placed in the genus Actinote, and the old subgenus Acraea (Acraea) becoming the genus Acraea with a subgenus Acraea (Bematistes). It also lists several Acraea as unplaced. This may further change as some believe the subgenus Acraea (Bematistes) will move to the genus Bematistes. The genus is primarily Afrotropical with only four species occurring outside this region, these being, Acraea andromacha (Fig. 1) A. meyeri (Fig. 10) A. moluccana and A. terpsicore. A fifth species the Yellow Coster Acraea (Actinote) issoria is now referred to the genus Actinote. Like many of the Nymphalidae the larvae feed on plants which contain cyanogens making the larvae and adults poisonous to predators. -

Nat. Croat., Vol. 21, No. 1., 259–262, 2012, Zagreb. After more than 40 years, the nymphalid butterfly Nymphalis vaualbum was rediscovered in Croa- tia. A single specimen was found on Mt. Papuk in the spring area of the Dubo~anka stream in July 2004. The habitats on Mt. Papuk are suitable for the species' long term survival; therefore the area was proposed as a NATURA 2000 site for this threatened and protected species. As the species has disappeared from many European countries, this recent record is of great importance and empha- sizes the need for further field research efforts to confirm resident populations of the species, its distribution area and population status. We describe a rearing protocol that allowed us to raise the threatened butterfly, Argynnis diana (Nymphalidae), while bypassing the first instar overwintering diapause. We compared the survival of offspring reared under this protocol from field-collected A. diana females from North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. Larvae were reared in the lab on three phylogenetically distinct species of Southern Appalachian violets (Viola sororia, V. pubescens,andV. pedata). We assessed larval survival in A. diana to the last instar, pupation, and adulthood. Males reared in captivity emerged significantly earlier than females. An ANOVA revealed no evidence of host plant preference by A. diana toward three native violet species. We suggest that restoration of A. diana habitat which promotes a wide array of larval and adult host plants, is urgently needed to conserve this imperiled species into the future. 1. HISTORIS ODIUS AND COEA ACHERONTA (NYMPHALIDAE-COLOBURINAE) ALBERT MUYSHONDT, JR. AND ALBERTO MUYSHONDT 101 Avenida Norte #322, San Salvador, El Salvador ABSTRACT. A complete photo-illustrated report on the early stages of Historis odius (Fabricius) and a partial of Coea acheronta (Fabricius) are presented, which reveals similarities between the two species suggesting a very close relationship. Both species utilize the same foodplant in El Salvador, Cecropia mexicana (Moraceae), whose close relative, C. peltata, has been reported as foodplant in Brazil by some authors under the vernacular name "Embauba." The placement of these two species in the Coloburini is questioned and some striking larval similarities with Smyrna blomfildia and S. karwinskii (both also questionably placed in the Coloburini) and with Pycina zelis (placed among the Vanesiini) are pOinted out. Larvae of Historis odius are subject to heavy parasitization mostly by tachinid flies and one case of nematode parasitization, (Mermis sp.), is recorded. Historis odius is by far more abundant in El Salvador than Coea acheronta and covers a wider range of altitudes. This article presents information on the life cycles and natural histories of the two largest species of butterflies included in the Coloburini: Historis odius (Fabricius) and Coea acheronta (Fabricius).1 The first time we saw the eggs of Historis odius was 6 October 1970 when our good friend Viktor Hellebuyck captured and papered a female. Some 15 eggs were deposited by the female while still alive inside the envelope. -

The image below shows three voucher specimens collected during 2011 surveys at Eight Dollar Mountain illustrating the similarities in appearance between S. coronis and S. zerene. The uppermost specimen is S. zerene. The bottom two are S. coronis. FW tip drawn out. VHW discs tan to brandy with silver orbs large and ovoid. Marginal silver spots flattened, broadly and flatly capped with olive tan. VHW silver spots not visible from above as lighter areas. Wings longer than S. callipe. May-Sept., peak June, Aug. S. c. coronis: found sparsely in Siskiyous; heavier black marks and darker discs; somewhat larger and darker above and below than nominate. Lack greenish tinge to ventral ground color seen in fresh specimens of other subspp. Speyeria callipe nominate: medium-large (<2.5”); wings relatively short and triangular. Pattern of silver spots beneath conspicuously indicated by lighter spots above.
