The Criterion www.the-criterion.com An International Journal in English ISSN 0976-8165 Multiplicity and ‘Power’ of Rituals in Shri Jagannatha Temple Prasanta Ghoshal Lecturer, Sir Gurudas Mahavidyalaya, University of Calcutta Power is socio-psychologically woven into human nature and in all political, religious and social institutions there remains an essential operation of power which occurs from all arbitrary directions to give birth to a discursive notion to establish an order or mode of action in a specific territory of any institutionalized organization or body of administration. Religion is a belief which frames itself into the camouflage of age old rites and rituals, aided by the myths and legendary sustenance about God, demons or any supra-human power that man is afraid of. In the Jungian term the “Collective Unconscious” of any community of men, germinates and strengthens the myths. The rites compel people to submit themselves. Those rituals gradually become the apparatus of obedience and subjugation to that regional, ethnic or national ‘God’ and these man-made rites become the root of the multiplicities of observing, worshipping and celebrating the particular holy being. Lord Jagannatha at Puri is one of the most famous deities in India. The institution at which He is worshipped or the holy ‘darshan’ of the God is found is the Nilmadhav Temple which has not only been a popular place but also has become one of the busiest tourist spots in India. In the Temple Hindu religious orthodoxy is autocratically ruling all over and a dictatorship of the priestly class looms large. These priests have an intra-class conflict among themselves on the issues of myth making, ritualizing and the administrative manipulation. -

The practice of pilgrimage in Hinduism follows from some of the basic underpinnings of its philosophy. Perhaps the earliest allusion to the practice of pilgrimage in Indian literature is to be found in the Aitareya Brahmana of the Rigveda. References to pilgrimage are also found in various religious scriptures as "Nadistuti" (river-hymn), Manu Smrlti and Puranas. The practice of Pilgrimage, with its ancient and diverse origins, continues to be popular among the Hindus. In fact, one can mention, without fear of contradiction, that more people now visit more sacred places than ever before in the history of India . This can be explained on the ground that increased facilities of travel are offered by government and private agencies. Several tourist agencies offer round tour packages providing for visits to places of religious interest and large cities etc. Even students visit religious and other places of interest on study tours by chartered buses hired by the school authorities. Of course, this new trend is the result of ever increasing rural and urban prosperity on the one hand and the general trend of travelling to different areas partly as a need of the modern civilization and partly the affliction -119- for one's own religion. In ancient times most people lived on farms or on large estates. There were no shops. Also there were not enough goods or people for daily trade. -

The point of consciousness which we call the individuality. Around it all other things are centred. 2. The mind that recognises its own existence. 3. The mind that comes out through the senses and makes a contact with “others”. 4. The mind that knows and decides. 5. The mind that establishes its relationships with others. 6. The light that recognises itself existing in others. 7. The one who lives in all in the form of Love. There are people who live in each of these seven layers of consciousness. A living being awakens as the central point of the globe of one’s own existence (individuality). It takes up its journey and awakens into the second layer and the third layer of its own existence. This process is what the Ancients call Evolution. It continuous until it reaches the seventh, the outermost plane of consciousness, when it experiences the One Existence. This One Existence is liberation from the other six layers of consciousness. The PREFACE seventh layer, though it is absolute and beyond time and space, exists as the One Person who showers His Love upon the beings of all the other layers. This One Person can be called the Eternal Existence. -

Wardha River divided Vidarbha in two region eastern part and western part of Vidarbha. Presently in Vidarbha region eleven districts viz., Buldhana,Wardha, Akola, Washim, Amaravati, Yawatmal, Nagpur, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gondia, and Gadchiroli. Vidarbha region divided in two region eastern part and western part. Vidarbha is in the eastern region of the Indian state of Maharashtra, comprising Nagpur Division and Amravati Division. Its former name is Berar (Varhad in Marathi). It occupies 31.6% of the total area and holds 21.3% of the total population of Maharashtra. It is border the state of Madhya Pradesh to the north, Chhattisgarh in the east, Telanganain the south and Marathwada and Khandesh regions of Maharashtra in the west. Situated in central India, Vidarbha has its own rich, cultural and historical background distinct from rest of Maharashtra. The largest city in Vidarbha is Nagpur. A majority of Vidarbha people speak Varhadi and Zadi dialects of Marathi. Vidarbha region is very rich in archaeological remains. From prehistoric time to modern times, the archaeological evidences are available in this region. -

Hawkes*, Riza Abbas† and Michael Willis* This report presents the results of a short programme of fieldwork targeted towards the investiga- tion of the archaeological and geographical setting of the Chamak copperplate charter. This inscription, unearthed in the modern village of Chamak in 1868, records the grant of land to a group of Brahmins living in the village of ‘Charmaka’. These have long been assumed to be the same place, but the archaeo- logical contexts of the find spot of the charter had never been explored. Preliminary surveys in and around Chamak have revealed a considerable amount of archaeological material, which is presented here.
