Searching fantasy: Froberger’s fantasias and ricercars four centuries on1 Terence Charlston ‘Obscure, profound it was, and nebulous’ 2 It is more than a little surprising, given Johann Jacob Froberger’s significance in the written history of music, how little of his music is regularly played or known today. Traditionally he is viewed as the most important German seventeenth-century keyboard composer, pre-eminent alongside Frescobaldi and Sweelinck, the ‘Father’ of the Baroque keyboard suite. He was celebrated in his own day and his reputation and works were considered important enough to be researched and preserved by following generations. Today the physical notes of his music are readily available in facsimile and modern ‘complete’ editions (see Table 1) and the identification of several new sources of his music since the 1960s, one of which is an autograph with 13 otherwise unknown pieces, have generated renewed interest and discussion.3 Nonetheless, Froberger’s music is still represented in concert and recording only by the same handful of more ‘popular’ pieces which have graced recital programmes and teaching curricula for at least the last 70 years. These few pieces, chosen for their exceptional rather than their representative qualities, leave the majority of his music in peripheral limbo. Jean-Philippe Rameau Complete Harpsichord Works ______ Simone Stella Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the Baroque era. He was successor of Jean-Baptiste Lully as the dominant composer of French opera and is also considered the leading French composer for the harpsichord of his time, alongside François Couperin. Rameau's music is characterised by the exceptional technical knowledge of a composer who wanted above all to be renowned as a theorist of the art. Nevertheless, it is not solely addressed to the intelligence, and Rameau himself claimed, "I try to conceal art with art." Along with François Couperin, Rameau is one of the two masters of the French school of harpsichord music in the 18th century. There are several recordings of Rameau's complete harpsichord works. The new version by young Florentine organist and harpsichordist Simone Stella adds an interesting element to the international discography. The recording, available in HD 88.2/24, has been captured using two Sennheiser small diaphram microphones and Prism Sound pres/converters. Simone Stella is one of the leading harpsichordists and organists of Italy, his earlier recordings of the complete keyboard works of Buxtehude received uniform praise in the international press: “Thoroughly imaginative and engaging” (Fanfare), “Convincing and surprisingly” (Klassic.com).” Cat. 500 YEARS OF ORGAN MUSIC ORGAN SPECIFICATIONS (for complete track list, see page 38) CD1 track 1–8 Fabio Antonio Falcone at the organ of the Church of San Giuseppe, Montevecchio di Pergola Organ probably dating back to the middle of the XVII century by unknown artist, placed in the choir loft above the main door entrance by wooden case leaning against the back wall and harnessing a 30 cm (12’’) niche deep integrated into the masonry. The prospectus consists of three arches of which the main one is at the center. The 21 pipes are divided into three groups of seven barrels each from note Sol1 of register Principal 8’. The three arches are delimited by four pilasters at the base of which are four aviaries with com-mand register to throttle and air supplies that depart from each fan. The keyboard has 45 keys with a range of C1-C5 with short octave. The fronts and the natural keys are covered in box-wood, the sharps are in walnut painted black. The pedal is the type « a leggio » , spruce, 9 pedals constantly united to the keyboard. The two wedge bellows are placed at the side of the case and can be operated manually or with electric fan. Giuliano Catani, per preparare una scheda dell’or- gano della Pieve. Mi chiese questo favore mons. Luigi Sessa poiché si cerca- va di preparare le schede descrittive degli organi della Diocesi di Firenze in vista di un censimento degli stessi strumenti. Non avrei mai pensato che nei trentacinque anni seguenti sarei succeduto a don Giuliano prima al Sacro Cuore a Firenze e poi qui a San Silvestro a Bar- berino. Al mio arrivo, dopo aver acceso l’organo, mi sono reso conto che avrebbe avuto bisogno di una buona ristrutturazione. Insieme al Mo. Umberto Cerini, discepolo che ha ormai abbondantemente superato il maestro, abbiamo cercato un organaro che potesse preparare un preventivo per il lavoro all’organo. Ottenuto il preventivo bisognava trovare i fondi per la realizzazione del lavoro. Parlando con l’amico Roberto Marcori, in forza dell’amicizia spirituale e umana che ci lega da tanti anni ormai, egli si è reso immediatamente dispo- nibile ad aiutarci per far tornare l’organo a lodare nuovamente il Signore ac- compagnando la preghiera della comunità cristiana. Nel ringraziarlo dell’aiuto, ho proposto di dedicare il progetto alla memoria della sua mamma: la cara mamma Ada che ho avuto la gioia di conoscere personalmente durante il mio servizio pastorale al Sacro Cuore e della quale ho apprezzato la nobiltà d’animo, la sensibile tenerezza materna e la profon- da fede cattolica.
