Guyer and Sidney Mintz 131 References 141 Index 155 Foreword The Lewis Henry Morgan lectures at the University of Rochester were inaugurated in 1962 and have been presented annually ever since. The lectures commemorate not only Morgan’s contributions to the found- ing of the University of Rochester and his support for the founding of a women’s college, but also his legacy in anthropology, as reflected in the topics of the first three lectures, which focused on kinship (Meyer Fortes, 1963), native North Americans (Fred Eggan, 1964), and technology and social evolution (Robert M. Adams, 1965). As the oldest and longest-running such lecture series in North America, the Morgan Lectures have produced some of the most influ- ential texts in modern anthropology, to name but a few: Victor Turner’s The Ritual Process, Marilyn Strathern’s After Nature, and Nancy Munn’s The Fame of Gawa. A view of the lectures after more than fifty years illus- trates the ways that anthropologists have moved well beyond Morgan’s Enlightenment roots, and also how they have expanded upon the topics that preoccupied him: kinship and social organization, political econo- my, indigenous peoples, and cross-cultural comparison. Many of the lectures have culminated in the publication of an origi- nal monograph. Some of them that have not yet appeared in print will now enjoy a second life online and in new print editions, thanks to a new collaboration with Hau, which will bring past, unpublished lectures to a wider audience. In addition, more recent lectures will be available in streaming video format on Hau’s website. viii THE MEANING OF MONEY IN CHINA AND THE UNITED STATES We are delighted to present Emily Martin’s public lectures, The mean- ing of money in China and the United States, which were first delivered in 1986 and are presented here for the first time in their entirety. These four lectures combine ethnographic richness, conceptual brilliance, and cultural critique, connecting with Morgan’s interest in property and his comparative approach. They offer an illuminating analysis of money, val- ue, and morality through the lenses of rural Taiwanese social life and the pursuits of prosperity among a Methodist sect in urban Baltimore. With the passage of time, they have remained lucid and fascinating. Moreover, they have proven to be prescient, as debt, money, currency, and finance capital would become objects of renewed ethnographic attention espe- cially at the turn of the millennium. Introduction WORKING UP TO THE 1986 MORGAN LECTURES When I wrote the 1986 Morgan Lectures, I was working in the early days of the anthropology department at Johns Hopkins University. They were written as part and parcel of my own intellectual path, but that path was strongly influenced by the department’s environment. My immediate colleagues included Sidney Mintz, Katherine Verdery, Gillian Feeley-Harnik, Michel-Rolph Trouillot, Ashraf Ghani, Beatriz Lavandera, and Richard and Sally Price. So close that they might well have been in the department were David Harvey, Erica Schoenberger (geographers), and David Cohen (historian). Sidney Mintz set about leav- ening the mix by adding various luminaries for short visits or semester long residencies: Claude Lévi-Strauss, Raymond Firth, Edmund Leach, Maurice Bloch, Fredrik Barth, and Arturo Warman. Encountering and conversing with these scholars in the flesh was immensely rewarding, for they stayed with us long enough to burst the bounds of our rather parochial American obsessions. We learned the long story of their early, middle, and late research projects, their different academic homes, and the different ways they engaged with anthropological theory over the decades. We were confronted deeply with different national styles of anthropology, attached of course to different colonial histories: French anthropology, British an- thropology from the London School of Economics to Cambridge Uni- versity, Mexican anthropology, and Norwegian anthropology. 2 THE MEANING OF MONEY IN CHINA AND THE UNITED STATES The most remarkable feature of that environment was its lack of dog- ma. At the beginning of the department’s founding, we emerged as a group from a fractious atmosphere in anthropology. At the time the sub- topics within the field erew fairly well defined: economic anthropology, symbolic anthropology, linguistic anthropology, political anthropology, anthropology of religion, and so on. Students had to work within these boxes and faculty were expected to identify themselves in terms of them. At the time, anthropologists were exercised over who would win the bat- tle between materialist or symbolic accounts of human cultures. The au- thors of articles in the Annual Review of Anthropology in those years say it all: on the one hand Richard Salisbury (1973), Carol A. Smith (1974), and Harold K. Schneider (1975), and on the other Victor Turner (1975), and Abner Cohen (1979).

Introduction: the economic sphere and labor in social anthropology Anthropologists have traditionally studied labor in their monographs about indigenous groups, ethnic minorities, the peasantry, fishers and artisans. In these studies of labor, as in the economic sphere in general, it appears as enmeshed in the totality of the social life of these “traditional”, “pre-capitalist” groups. Generally such anthropological studies focus on the centrality of gift giving and reciprocity, which negate or obscure economic interests for the benefit of the logic of honor or of symbolic capital. They regard the gift as a total social fact where the market principal is subordinated to that of reciprocity and redistribution. Labor in these studies is not the central theme of interest, but appears in a form subordinated to other aspects with which it is interrelated. Between the 1950s and 1970s, anthropologists engaged with the question of the critical application or appropriation of concepts from diverse currents of so-called economic theory. Such concepts were constructed to explain the capitalist economy, but anthropologists embraced these economic principles in general to understand all societies. A debate arose between “substantivists”, who praised the historicity of concepts and the necessity of new instruments for the economic analysis of non-capitalist societies and the “formalists” who gave a wider reach to existing economic theories to apply to their ethnographies. The substantivists were located in some American universities and drew heavily on the work of and disciples of the Hungarian economic historian Karl Polanyi; later they would have an important repercussion in the whole anthropological field.

Interdisciplinarity, East-West relations and commoditization of knowledge in anthropology of post-socialism Kacper Pobłocki Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology Central European University, Budapest, Hungary Abstract: Debates on 'native anthropology', 'anthropology with an accent' and so forth have usually focused on colonialism as the main culprit of asymmetric relations between anthropological knowledges. By bringing the recent dispute between Western and 'native' anthropologist of post-socialism into the 'world anthropologies' debate, I seek to highlight those aspects of current epistemic inequalities that are not post-colonial in nature, but result from global commoditization of knowledge. I ponder why Western anthropologists who started visiting Eastern Europe from the 1970s, concluded that 'native' academic knowledge is inferior to their own output. This was not due to a prejudice brought from afar, I argue, but rather was a result of their field experiences. I discuss how three types of native 'captive minds' (communist, nationalist, and neo-liberal) emerged, and how encountering (or learning about) them made Western anthropologist uninterested in (and distrustful of) local epistemic production. I focus on the putative nationalist 'captive mind', and argue that the straw man of East European 'positivist' science (as opposed to the superior 'theory-oriented' Western anthropology) emerged due to recent changes in the political economy of the academia. I show how the 'theoretical turn' was experienced differently in Western and Polish academia, and how these changes, explained by the different regimes of value, show that there has been an increase only in 'ritual' exchange between parochial and metropolitan anthropology rather than meaningful communication.

TO obtain the best possible results from an analysis of power in a primitive society, it is best to define power broadly. The idea of diffuse power is not a new one. It has had intermittent currency fromJohn Locke to Bertrand Russell. But the philosophers have not necessarily circumscribed the concept in the way that I wish to convey. Moreover, since the definition is a simple one, it is surely better to define the concept than to review the literature. First, we should exclude the sense given it by Meyer Fortes and Evans-Pritchard in the introduction of their book, African Political Systems ( 1940, xxiii), 2 in which they see power as the ability of individuals to control and regulate the use of physical force. This, incidentally, is the sense most often used in reference to primitive data, and is the meaning given to the word by H. Codere in her article on "Power in Rwanda."3 We should also exclude the definitions of the political scientists having to do with decision making. Power as used here will mean the ability to do, i.e. the faculty possessed by things, events, institutions, and men, of having the potential to move and alter. Although I want to use the definition of power as a modal proposition, nevertheless, in order to have the meaning of power grasped more firmly, it is best to think of it as a substance rather than as an activity.

African American Memory at the Crossroads: Grounding the Miraculous with Tooy Kenneth Bilby Travels with Tooy may be both the most readable and the most complex and demanding of Richard Price’s works on the Saramaka people of Suriname.1 Gone are the relatively transpar- ent and somewhat mechanical textual devices—the dialogical juxtapositions of clearly demar- cated alternating passages in differing fonts—that presented readers with a certain narrative consistency and progression (even while carrying challenges of their own) in First-Time and Alabi’s World.2 In their place is a kind of multitextured narrative patchwork, a loosely stitched crazy quilt of time-coded stories and “teachings” that jump across eras and locations, both imagined and literal. The stories and lessons, presented less as chapters than as excursions within and across interlinked timescapes, lead through an ever-thickening evocation of the African American temporal-spiritual worlds inhabited by Price’s partner in this enterprise, a very knowledgeable Saramaka Maroon óbiaman (healer and spiritual practitioner) known as Tooy. Only toward the very end of the book does Price attend to the matter of what his and Tooy’s extended dialogue might tell us about some of the much-debated larger questions that continue to preoccupy students of African American societies and cultures. Bronislaw Malinowski, one of the most important anthropologists of the 20th century, is generally recognized as one of the founders of social anthropology, transforming 19th century speculative anthro­ pology into a field-oriented science that is based on empirical research. Malinowski is principally associated with his field research of the Mailu and especially of the Tro- briand Islanders in what is now Papua New Guinea, and his masterpieces on Trobri- and ethnography continue "to enthrall each generation of anthropologists through its intensity, rich detail, and penetrating revelations" (Weiner 1987: xiv). Bronislaw Kasper Malinowski (nicknamed Bronek & Bronio) was born in Cracow (then Austrian Galicia, now Poland) on 7 April 1884 as the only child of Jozefa (nee Lacka) and Lucjan Malinowski. His father (1839-1898) was professor of Slavonic philology at the Jagiellonian University of Cracow and was well known not only as a philologist but also as an ethnographer specialized in Polish dialects and Silesian folklore and ethnol­ ogy. He died of a heart attack at the age of 58 when his son (who was to die in the same way at the same age) was only 14.
