VI Editor s Note THE plan for this volume arose from discussions in the Department of Anthropology of the London School of Economics, where Malinowski was for so long a distinguished student, teacher, and leader. As a result of these discussions I was given responsibility for collecting and editing the essays which here appear. I am grateful to all my col- laborators, whose names are in the Table of Contents, for the patience and good humour with which they have complied with editorial demands and borne with delays. I am especially indebted to Audrey I, Richards and to I. Schapera for their help and counsel. The essays here are not eulogies but evaluations. Their viewpoints are essentially personal and therefore by no means all the same. Their intention is to try and give, after a lapse of much more than a decade since Malinowski's death, a clear notion of his contribution to his chosen subject, in terms of its meaning for a student today. This subject, the science of man as seen in the regularities and significance of man's social behaviour, has of necessity been split up rather arbitrarily by the origin- ators of this volume into a number of themes. Not every major aspect of Malinowski's work has been thus separately treated. For example, his concept of function and his use of psycho-analytical theory are men- tioned, though somewhat briefly, under other heads. But it will probably be agreed that the essays as a set do give a synoptic view of the main strength and weakness of Malinowski's contribution and its modern relevance. In the selection of authors, the intention of the originators of the volume was to obtain the opinions of a representative set of Malinowski's former students and colleagues who came under his influence in Lon- don. This meant giving primarily, though not exclusively, a British viewpoint. It has also meant severe limitation on the number of con- tributors and on the space allotted to them. Yet even though some who were invited to contribute were unable to accept, a substantial book has still been put together. It is regretted that various other colleagues with full entitlement to appear are not here represented. London School of Economics and Political Science June, 1956 vm Introduction: Malinowski as Scientist and as Man RAYMOND FIRTH THIS book has been written because some of us have thought for a long while that too little attention has been paid to the work of Bronislaw Malinowski. He has been one of the outstanding influences in shaping modern British social anthropology. More than ten years have passed since his death and the time has come for a fresh estimate of his contribution. His achievement has indubitably suflfered from his early death. If he had lived for another decade his dialectical skill, let alone the richness of his creative mind, would have found many answers to his critics and derived profit from their comment. Much of this com- ment has been justified, but by no means all, and sometimes his work has been passed over where credit was due. Three factors in particular seem to be responsible for this. One is that the climate of opinion, particularly in British social anthropology, changed radically in the decade and a half after Malinowski left Eng- land. This was partly due to the influence of Radcliffe-Brown, and partly to the growing realization of the need for a clearer structural approach to give more precision to many anthropological generalizations. Malinowski was not a structuralist in the narrow sense, and appreciation of his work suflfered by comparison. Secondly, Malinowski's analytical contributions to anthropology were much stronger than his systematic contributions. He did not develop his concept of function very far. And in his attempts to create a system which would take full account of his concept of culture he landed himself with a difficult, unwieldy and to some extent unprofitable theoretical construction. The third reason was that Malinowski's personal qualities made for him 'unfriends' as well as friends. His intolerance of what he considered sham or insincerity, his impatience with criticism that he did not think was based on loyalty, his tenderness towards personal slights and his relative insensitivity to the effects of his exuberance towards others all tended to arouse hostility. Some criticisms of Malinowski's work, however justified, I RAYMOND FIRTH could hardly be expected therefore to have been made with entire detachment. One result was that Malinowski has become something of a legend in to those who never knew him. He has continued to be a great name anthropology. But while his reputation as a superb field-worker has been maintained, his fame as a really great teacher in the Socratic tradition has been allowed to fade, and his achievement in creating a new and enduring approach to anthropology has not been properly understood. Without him, the aridities of the Kulturkreislehre and the fantasies of pan-Egyptianism would doubtless have in due course been corrected and overcome. But for the younger generation of anthropologists in Europe, at least, he fought that battle and won it by the end of the 'twenties'. And though now this is dim history, those who were students at that time know what formidable opponents were to be encountered in Elliot Smith, Pater Schmidt, and their adherents. Yet this was merely by the way. It was incidental to the main task Malinowski had set him- self—a dynamic interpretation of human behaviour in the widest range of cultural circumstances, in terms which were at once more theoretically sophisticated, and more realistic, than any then current.

Introduction: the economic sphere and labor in social anthropology Anthropologists have traditionally studied labor in their monographs about indigenous groups, ethnic minorities, the peasantry, fishers and artisans. In these studies of labor, as in the economic sphere in general, it appears as enmeshed in the totality of the social life of these “traditional”, “pre-capitalist” groups. Generally such anthropological studies focus on the centrality of gift giving and reciprocity, which negate or obscure economic interests for the benefit of the logic of honor or of symbolic capital. They regard the gift as a total social fact where the market principal is subordinated to that of reciprocity and redistribution. Labor in these studies is not the central theme of interest, but appears in a form subordinated to other aspects with which it is interrelated. Between the 1950s and 1970s, anthropologists engaged with the question of the critical application or appropriation of concepts from diverse currents of so-called economic theory. Such concepts were constructed to explain the capitalist economy, but anthropologists embraced these economic principles in general to understand all societies. A debate arose between “substantivists”, who praised the historicity of concepts and the necessity of new instruments for the economic analysis of non-capitalist societies and the “formalists” who gave a wider reach to existing economic theories to apply to their ethnographies. The substantivists were located in some American universities and drew heavily on the work of and disciples of the Hungarian economic historian Karl Polanyi; later they would have an important repercussion in the whole anthropological field.

    Dislocating the self: anthropological field work in the Kimberley, Western Australia, 1934–1936 Geoffrey Gray The anthropologist Phyllis Kaberry, author of the now classic study, Aboriginal woman: sacred and profane , was a young and inexperienced researcher when she first went to the field between March and November 1934 and again between May 1935 and June 1936. The Australian National Research Council (ANRC) funded her research, acting on the advice of its Committee for Anthropology, chaired by AP Elkin.1 Elkin, Professor of Anthropology in the only teaching department of anthropology in an Australian uni- versity, had control not only over where research was conducted but also over who could conduct that research. Despite the discipline’s youth – the chair had been founded in 1925 – a structure and unwritten rules governing the behaviour of anthro- pologists in the field had already been developed, as well as a methodological approach to field work, driven by an interest in ‘traditional’ Aboriginal social and cultural prac- tices and institutions rather than the contemporary everyday circumstances of Aboriginal people.2 WEH Stanner, a contemporary of Phyllis Kaberry, described the dilemma: I had been taught to turn my back on the speculative reconstruction of the origins and development of primitive institutions, and to have an interest only in their living actuality … [but] an interest in ‘living actuality’ scarcely extended to the actual life-conditions of the aborigines.3 The containment of criticism of government policy and practice went hand-in- hand with this limited research focus. Kaberry’s research was framed within this dis- course – and its consequent limitations – and a concomitant realisation that they were a pre-requisite to a future career in anthropology in Australia.

Sometimes they called “Tribe” as “aboriginal” or “depressed classes” or “Adivasees”. Normally, ‘tribe’ may be a group of individuals during a primitive or barbarous stage of development acknowledging the authority of a chief and typically regarding them as having a same ancestor. According to the Imperial Gazetteer of India, a tribe is a collection of families bearing a common name, speaking a common dialect, occupying or professing to occupy a common territory and is not usually endogamous, though originally it might have been so.

    Diffuse Power as a Commodity: A Case Study from Gisaka (Eastern Rwanda)1 PIERRE BETTEZ GRAVEL Northern Illinois University, U.S.A. TO obtain the best possible results from an analysis of power in a primitive society, it is best to define power broadly. The idea of diffuse power is not a new one. It has had intermittent currency fromJohn Locke to Bertrand Russell. But the philosophers have not necessarily circumscribed the concept in the way that I wish to convey. Moreover, since the definition is a simple one, it is surely better to define the concept than to review the literature. First, we should exclude the sense given it by Meyer Fortes and Evans-Pritchard in the introduction of their book, African Political Systems ( 1940, xxiii), 2 in which they see power as the ability of individuals to control and regulate the use of physical force. This, incidentally, is the sense most often used in reference to primitive data, and is the meaning given to the word by H. Codere in her article on "Power in Rwanda."3 We should also exclude the definitions of the political scientists having to do with decision making. Power as used here will mean the ability to do, i.e. the faculty possessed by things, events, institutions, and men, of having the potential to move and alter. Although I want to use the definition of power as a modal proposition, nevertheless, in order to have the meaning of power grasped more firmly, it is best to think of it as a substance rather than as an activity.

    Slavec Gradišnik Against the “Aversion to Theory” Against the “Aversion to Theory”: Tracking “Theory” in Postwar Slovenian Ethnology Ingrid Slavec Gradišnik ZRC SAZU, Institute of Slovenian Ethnology Slovenia Abstract As elsewhere in Europe, disciplinary transformations of ethnology and folklore studies in Slo- venia were embedded in the changing political and social map after the Second World War. In the postwar years, sporadic reflections on the discipline’s academic and social position antici- pated the search for a new disciplinary identity. The first attempts to reconceptualize “folk cul- ture” as a building block of ethnological research and the use of the name “ethnology” instead of “ethnography/Volkskunde” in the 1950s also reflected the approaching of “small national ethnology” to “European ethnology.” Only in the 1960s and 1970s, radical epistemological and methodological criticism anticipated the transformation of the disciplinary landscape. The article tracks paradigmatic shifts in the field of tension between empirically oriented and theoretically grounded research. The former regarded “theorizing” as superfluous or the op- posite of “practice.” It more or less reproduced the “salvage project” and the positivist model of cultural-historical and philologically oriented research. The new agenda proposed a dialectical genetic-structural orientation that advocated for a “critical scholarship.” It insisted on the correspondence between the discipline’s subject and the empirical reality that reflects the socio- historical dynamics inherent to culture and everyday life. It introduced “way of life” (everyday life, everyday culture) as a core subject of research that expanded research topics, called for new methodological tools, revised affiliations to related disciplines, recognized discipline’s applied aspects, and addressed the re-reading of disciplinary legacy.
