ANNUAL REPORT 2017/2018 PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another season has come and gone, and we congratulate all players and friends from St Pats community on another successful season.

This year saw some changes in the game formats for both men’s and the juniors. We had 3 T20 Blast teams commencing their careers. Run at Kareela Oval the modified format was a great success and we look forward to building on this success in future seasons.

In the younger age groups, we saw changes in the number of fielder’s length of pitch and smaller boundaries. The results were increase participation more shots played and more fun resulting. Look out for further changes to the game format in 18/19 season.

In the men’s competition we saw the reduction in overs in the 2 day format from 60 to 50. I think the majority of players preferred the newer format and the earlier finish.

Congratulations to our 2 premiership winning teams – 16B-1 and the B4 men’s teams.

Special thanks to all the committee members this year. Whilst it is a small group of people they work very well together to get almost 30 teams on the paddocks each season. A number of the committee are looking to retire so I would encourage anyone who would like to assist in the Club to step up no matter how small the contribution. One of the success factors the committee has achieved is produce a policy and procedure document which outlines what needs to be done, by whom and by when.

The Club was again supported by our friends at the Tradies and we thank them for their continued support.

Hope everyone enjoys their winter activities and look forward to seeing you back with St Pats in the 2018/2019 season.

St. Patrick’s Cricket Club remains in a strong financial position after the 2017-18 season with a season profit of around $1,700.00, this is a good result although we still have outstanding debts of around $3,000.00 for 60 year “Celebration Costs” (meaning an actual loss of around $1,300.00 for the season).

Around $1,000.00 (Presentation Day expenses) still to be paid for this financial year, as well as Premiership Caps (approx. $2,00.00) and Annual reports (approx. $1,800.00) will come into next year’s expenses as usual.

Both income and expenditure are down this season due to decreases in seniors, girls and junior teams.

Page 4 of 60 Cricketer of the Year – Sam Mood

It is a great honour and privilege to be able to write this report on the cricketing achievements of Sam Mood. I had the pleasure of coaching Sam as an Under 8, way back in 2009 and again for the last year of his junior cricket career. As a result, I have had a front row seat watching the development of this young cricketer.

An absolute cricket tragic who not only would pour over the statistics of his team and opposition but constantly working on developing his game. Initially a swing bowler in the younger age groups Sam then developed his off spin as well as his batting culminating in a regular top order batsman in the 16A this season and opening the batting in the men’s competition.

A regular representative player from the U11 right through to this season being in the Watson Shield team. Overall Sam played 92 matches for St Pats over 10 years accumulating 749 runs and 78 .

Cricket is not all about stats and games played, it’s the manner in which you play the resilience you show when things don’t go your way. Sam has always played within the right spirit and is a great teammate.

It has been a great journey watching the little blonde 6 year old back in 2009 to the young man he is today. Wish him all the best for the future both and off the field.

CHRIS HEWITT

Page 5 of 60 Junior Cricketer of the Year – James Morrison

Pretty simple to sum Jimmy up – a great cricketer but a better person.

Jimmy is there for the team and to help out his mate’s. He plays cricket how it should be played; fun, challenging, looking for personal and team bests, but always fair and in the right spirit.

Jimmy is a talent, he can bat, bowl and field. Quick between the and also quick between the ears. Jimmy was our most consistent batsmen and tied top wicket taker. Hit a few sixes throughout the year and was graceful to watch.

I am proud of him and I am sure all previous coaches and team mates would echo my remarks that this young man deserves this accolade and is a champion person.

Page 7 of 60 *Honours criteria:

The Club has applied minimum criteria for a player to be eligible for an Averages award. A player must have played in at least 50% of scheduled matches (ie 10 rounds = 5 match minimum). (if a match is washed out or otherwise cancelled or a bye, it counts as being played)

A batter meeting the above 50% rule, must have played a minimum number of innings OR scored a minimum number of runs as outlined below. A bowler meeting the above 50% rule, must have bowled a minimum number of overs OR taken the minimum number of wickets outlined below. The Committee has the discretion to ultimately decide award winners.

Page 14 of 60 TEAM REPORTS – Juniors 2017 / 2018

UNDER 10A

The 10A’s produced another brilliant season together. Once again, they were the most enthusiastic team in the competition. They always seem to be having twice as much fun as the opposition no matter what state of the game. It’s a standout attribute of this group of boys and it’s great to see cricket continuing to create lasting childhood memories. There were a few rule changes this year and after some initial concern I think they helped make for some very exciting cricket. We had numerous catches taken in slips, late cut shots and even some fierce bouncers bowled. The boy’s skills had matured immensely from last season and it was great to see them reading and changing their game to suit the situation. Our bowlers were thinking about how to get the batsman out and where to place their field. Our batsmen were looking to find the gaps and running between wickets like champions.

Hayden Clarke Hayden had a great season. He started the season with an extra few yards pace when bowling and really had many batsmen looking to get up the non strikers end as soon as possible. He also showed us what a great wicket keep he is. He’s got natural reflexes and a quick eye allowing him to take some silky catches with the gloves. It really took our game to a new level being able to take catches off the edge of the bat. He batted with a lot of patience this year. Opening the batting and seeing out the fast bowlers many times. He also let loose with some big boundaries.

Matthew Goddard Matty picked up where he left of last season. His bowling was outstanding. He is a natural swinger of the ball which had many batsmen clueless as to how they played him. He opened the bowling many times and generally got an early break through. He batted with genuine skill and was always working on his technique and thinking about how to score runs. He always knew how many runs he was on. Catching out his coach on a few occasions.

Page 15 of 60 Isaac Green Isaac was new to the team this season and immediately showed he deserved to play in A grade. He’s a natural talent and very keen to learn. He naturally plays some batting strokes that just can’t be taught. He always trained hard and it was very satisfying to seem him learn the skills we practiced at training and make them work for him on the weekend. Some of those cut shots towards the end of the season were glorious. He bowled, fielded and kept wickets with an abundance of talent this year.

Liam Hunter Liam was another new comer to this side and quickly showed us how much power he had with the bat. His pull shot cleared the field a quite few times. He has a rocket arm that he put to good use from the boundary. A great asset to have. He has a bowling action that creates a high bounce which proved difficult for most batsman to play. Great to have you in the team Liam.

Ben McLachlan Ben had a breakout season. He’s always had the ability and it was obvious how determined he was right from the start of this season. He was just about impossible to get out and was always looking to get even better. A joy to watch. Ben was rewarded for his effort making the development squad and topping the batting figures for the entire association. Fantastic effort buddy. Once again, he bowled nice and tight particularly towards the end of the season. He was the all-round package with his fielding and was always looking to motivate his team.

Angus Smith I don’t think Angus could believe that he was being told to bowl on a shorter pitch this year. His sheer pace had me feeling sorry for the batter at times. He kept his head though and developed his line and length. He was rewarded by getting a few wickets from edges and a few bowled. It was real cricket and very exciting. Angus was also rewarded with a spot in the development squad. Angus showed no fear with the bat finding the boundary plenty of times with some awesome shots. He took a catch this year that would have impressed a Yogi master. How he took the catch in that position I’ll never know. Greats skills.

Kalan Stubbs Kalan continued to benefit from his relaxed demeanor this season. Happily opening the batting or opening the bowling. He scored runs with ease at times and played some of the best cricket shots of the season. Particularly his straight driving. He bowled super accurate and his fielding inspired his team mates many times.

James Walker James handled some pretty serious fast bowling this year. His natural stance at the crease allowed him to play the right shot at the right time. He did it with a smile too. He bowled really well this season putting the ball on a difficult length for the batsman which meant he took some crucial wickets for the team this year. He also took some great catches and always had the batting team on their toes.

Byron Whitbread This was Byron’s first season of cricket which was pretty hard to believe. He is a born cricketer and it was obvious that he really loves the game. His leg spin bowling was an absolute standout. He gets some real “revs” on the ball and spins the ball both ways. Even better though, he lands the ball right where he wants it. Not easy to do. Many batsman had no idea what to do with his type of bowling. His fielding and catching at slip was great to watch. Taking catches in slip off the quicks in under 10’s amazing. He obviously watched a lot of cricket, channeling his heroes and emulating their batting styles. It’s great to see such passion.

Hugh Windon What a great season Hughie. Hugh bowled so straight and took some of the best catches I’ve seen from a 9 year old. Some of the caught and bowled particularly stood out. He topped the bowling figures and catching stats which is an amazing effort. He batted with strength and always looked solid at the crease. He copped a couple of unplayable balls this season that saw him lose his wicket early. It’s never easy but it happens to the best of them. He showed true character though by coming out again and batting superbly. One innings against a big left armer bowler showed what grit and skill he has as a player.

Congratulations on a great season of cricket boys. I’m really proud of how you all played this year. Thanks to Matt McLachlan for managing the team this year and putting all the scoring in. It’s not an easy job and it was much appreciated. Thank you to all the parents that scored this year and special mention to Brad Clarke for scoring as much as he possibly could.

The Under 10D team had an enjoyable season of cricket. Comprising a mix of returning players and those new to the club, and in some cases the sport, the team of eight boys and two girls blended well from the start developing a strong sense of team spirit and camaraderie. The majority of games were close competitive affairs with St Patricks coming out on the winning side of the scoreboard in five of the ten matches. All players developed their skills during the season, sharing the runs, wickets and catches evenly amongst the group and players were all given ample opportunity to bat, bowl, keep wicket and field in different positions around the outfield. Although most importantly a team game, different individuals contributed in their own ways.

Leo Blackburn developed a smooth swing bowling action which ensured him a creditable haul of eleven wickets over the course of the season, second only to Alex. In addition, he took important catches and made a number of run outs. With the bat he accumulated nearly one hundred runs, however, must learn to be a little more conservative in some of his running between the wickets. His elder sister Ava Blackburn took to the sport like a natural in her first season, developing a graceful bowling action and proving herself a handy batter. She took out the best batting average award due to the tenacity she displayed to protect her wicket at all costs and secure the least dismissals of any player in the team.

Ashton Booker established himself as a reliable batsman with strong shots on both sides of the wicket and a sharp pair of hands in the field. He bowled impressively, and his energy and positivity made him popular amongst his team-mates. Christian Comber matured as a batsman as the season progressed, learning to play each ball on its merits rather than with a premeditated swing and demonstrating excellent hand eye co-ordination to strike the ball sweetly. In the field he held onto several crucial catches and bowled steadily.

The diminutive Alex Efthymiou once again proved that height is no barrier to being a prolific bowler, taking the most wickets across the season with his unerringly accurate left arm swing bowling. He also contributed valuable runs as a stylish left handed batsman. Benjamin Fuller impressed with the bat, accumulating the most runs during the season and becoming far more consistent with his bowling. His younger brother Nicholas showed great promise with the keeping gloves including a couple of catches behind the stumps and a number of run outs. NIcholas also consistently performed as one of the sharpest fielders in the team.

Tom Gerrard also showed massive improvement from previous seasons, both with bat and ball, improving his backing up, calling and running between the wickets and making a late dash with seven wickets in the second half of the season to surprise many and end the season with the BBing average for the team. Tamarah Lovell, the other girl in the team was also playing her first season of cricket and was quickly in the midst of things with runs, wickets and catches right from the first round. She scored runs consistently across the season, held some terrific catches including taking a pair of catches in two consecutive matches and she developed a very effective bowling action. Most importantly Tamarah played the game with a huge smile upon her face.

Finally, Adam Woolley returning for his third season of cricket, showed probably the most dramatic progress across the season securing the coaches award for his significant improvement in consistency with both bat and ball. Inspired by the Sydney Sixers rally in the second half of their season, Adam followed suit returning after the Christmas break in inspired form to help the team through to a successful conclusion of the season.

Page 18 of 60 UNDER 12B

A cheerful group of lads and lasses, the team seemed to enjoy their cricket and were competitive in every game they played. All the player tried their best throughout the season.

Probably classified as a better bowling team, we missed out on the finals despite a valiant effort to win the last game outright. Ended up as being the highest number of wickets taken in the competition.

AM Cook Archie was the main wicket-keeper and all-round cheer squad keeping up the encouragement throughout the season as well as providing some swashbuckling stroke play with the bat and genuine pace with the ball. His improved batting doubled his tally for last year.

B Berry Famed for his spectacular catching, Boston was always enthusiastic in whatever he was required to do. A livewire in the field, a decent bat and extremely accurate bowler.

B Poole Missed a few games so his overall stats do not do him justice, Ben was a good all rounder who wielded the willow and made contributions with his bowling and fielding.

B Rullis Brooklyn helped us out in a couple of games when we were really short and contributed with runs and wickets. Her average and strike rate of wickets still tops the division.

B Sharma Bhavya’s continuous improvement in his batting and resulted in him doubling his batting tally from last year. A good bowler who was unlucky not to get more wickets, his year was highlighted with a maiden 50 .

C Rullis Cooper improved his batting and more than doubled his batting tally for last year. He also expanded his repertoire this season by keeping as well as contributing with his reliable bowling and batting including a maiden 50 not out.

E Cox Although Elijah was playing up a couple of years, you would never have known it with his mature batting and bowling, highlighted by a brilliant hat-trick against the eventual competition winners.

JF Whittaker Jack is an enthusiastic cricketer who takes his game seriously. With a dedicated training regime, he had a great year batting, bowling and fielding.

L Cox Lachlan took on the role of pinch hitter for the team alongside his legendary pace bowling. He enjoyed his role as a batsman and nearly quadrupled his run tally from last year. In one particular game he wanted to do some wicket keeping as well and took 1 catch.

L Eisbacher Lucas was always enthusiastic with whatever he was called upon. Bowling, batting or fielding, he did it with enthusiasm and legendary smile. Improved his bowling stats from last year and increased the number of wickets taken.

R Michels A season of 2 halves for Reilley. Struggled early on, but once he hit form, it stayed hit. 9 wickets in the season propelled him into the all rounders category as well as donning the gloves manty times.

S Lawler Sarah was always smiling and enjoying her cricket. Another one who trained tirelessly she improved on her batting stats from last year by doubling them. She also bowled well under pressure and contributed well in the field.

W Lowing Ever dependable Will was one of the most accurate bowlers and could be relied upon to break any partnership. He maintained his run tally from last year and greatly improved his wicket haul. Also lost count of the number of runs saved with his sliding fielding and great arm.

I am pleased to report that a great season was had by the St Patrick Under 12/3 over the summer of 2017/2018. The team had a spectrum of returning players and five new families to cricket meaning that 6 of our 11 players where new to the 2017/2018 season. Other challenges at the start of the season, before play was able to get underway was our ability to get the numbers for a full team (thanks to Warren for signing on families from Como) and also to all the players whom prior to the season did not know each other (except for the brothers).

With a very inexperienced group and the mighty hands on support received by all the players families the boys improved week after week from the first training session to the last. This improvement resulted in the 12/3 team finishing a very creditable 3 on the ladder in our respective grade.

From a group of ball shy players at the start, by the end of the season each player developed from a hitter to batter and was able to increase the speed and movement of the ball when it was their turn to bowl. With so many new families to cricket what was important to the coaching staff was that each player got a equal go and an opportunity to lead the team during the season. What the coaching staff was most proud of, was the interest to learn the game, the full turn up of the team for training and matches and the friend ships in team that where formed.

The 2017/2018 St Patricks Cricket Club under 12/3 team.

Ava Jenkins A gracious player with great wicket keeping hands and passion to play the game. Standing as an equal alongside the remainder of the her playing highlight was leading the team as the Captain in the first match against Bangor and her 20n/o in round 4.

Robert Bau A great utility player with two years of playing experience. A medium paced right arm bowler, whom improved his bowling week after week. Playing highlight was his highest score in Rd. 2.

Ben Bonner A boy who was ball shy in his first night of grading who developed to be a great all-round player and fiercely competitive with his brother Ryan. Ben went on to receive both bowling awards plus batting Av. award at season end.

Ryan Bonner A very gifted player with both the bat and the ball. Ryan’s confidence and results improved with the bat to just making boundaries in the early rounds to hitting sixes in the last rounds of the competition. His bowling also was feared by team mates and the other teams, the speed and movement of the seam made him a formidable bowler for the team. Ryan also scored most runs for the season.

Hayden Dalla Camina was a little general on the field with a big heart. He was a thinking cricketer able to push and pull players into position and when presented with the keeping gloves really gave it a good shot to be behind the ball.

Page 22 of 60 Caiden Flanagan Our left handed batter and bowler whom presented a constant dilemma to our challenging teams and umpires. A very creditable knock with the bat and a number of 4’s during the season provided Caiden with a very enjoyable season. Caiden also excelled as a Keeper.

Rhys Henrikson A talented boy whom proved to be the dark horse for the team, another utility player that was a quiet achieve with consistent batting and bowling for the season. In the last rounds of the season, Rhys’s highlight was to take a number of catches in a single game to the detriment of our competition.

Ben Holdway A new player to St Patricks, who always showed early to training and had a great and rewarding year under Warren’s tutoring. Bens ability to listen, learn and apply is new found knowledge in the nets and take that to the field was extraordinary. Ben will be a future batter with his good hand-eye and footwork that was well developing during the season. He was rewarded with the highest team score of the season with 34n/o.

Scott Kemp Passion, passion, passion for cricket with a burning desire to play hard and play well. A new comer to the game, with an appetite to experiment with his bowling technique. Good fun to be around and certainly one of the personalities of the team.

Zak Larsen Another new player to the game and a great improver during the season. A competitive player with a both good batting and bowling capability. Enjoyed his time with the team both on and off the field.

Timothy Paige Our winner of the 2017/2018 Coach’s award for his ever constant concentration and spirit to play the game of cricket. Timothy from week to week, soldiered on over after over with his bowling and his persistence at crease with game after game improving his scores over the season.

Lastly successful seasons cannot be without the help and assistance of the player’s families. From the coaching staff of St Patricks 12/3, we would like to recognise and thank the following for their week in, week out contribution to the team. Mark Paige as the teams’ primary scorer and the player support group of Michael Larsen, Brenton Kemp and Arron Jenkins. Both Warren and I hoped that players and families all enjoyed the past summer of cricket with St Patricks. All the best in the off-season with your winter sports and we look forward to seeing you all next year for another exciting season of cricket.

Firstly, a huge thank you for the support and assistance from the parents and players. Hibbo, Raff, and Joe for the assistance at training and scoring. A Grade was never going to be easy assignment but as they say “iron sharpens iron”. The group never lost sight about the things cricket is meant to be, having fun, self-improvement, hanging out with your mates and doing something you enjoy.

This was one of my most enjoyable years to coach a group of young men and women. Another point I am proud to say is that St Patricks 14A’s has 3 young woman doing there absolute best week in week out. No other team in the 14A’s had a female represented. We had 9 of the 12 cricketers playing some form of Representative cricket as well, with Ben Hibbins, Nick Palermo and Nathan Taylor winning the U13 title.

We also had the honour of announcing the Junior Cricketer of the Year to our very own Jimmy Morrison. I am proud of the group and next year we have some staying in 14’s and some moving to 16’s. I look forward to seeing you all back next year.

James Morrison This young man can do it all, a quality batsman, a fantastic fielder and when pitching the ball up J Jimmy proved with the ball he is a weapon taking the tied most wickets for the season. Jimmy also hit the most sixes for the team.

Austin Hewitt Austin is a live wire, he loves having some banter and helping the team as he still has untapped potential. Can do it all and needs to work on consistency and patience. Austin also Captained us to victory against Caringbah.

Nick Palermo One half of the spin twins, Nick shared most wickets with Jimmy this season and should be proud of the amazing improvement throughout the year. Credit Raff Palermo for the bowling coaching on this one. Nick also opened the batting and has all the shots. Just wait for the right ball.

Ben Hibbins The second half of the spin twins, Ben from the start of the year was the most improved bowler and will continue to have great success. Ben’s batting also was consistent and led us to victory against Caringbah in the final game of the season. Also smashed a six at Kareela off the “toe of the bat”.

Adrian Duganzic Adrian first year with us and we were glad to have him. Adrian took the first wicket of the season against Bangor. Was a genuine threat when pitching the ball up. Adrian also top scored in the game against Bangor and his Batting at Number 4 against Caringbah laid the platform for the Victory.

Page 24 of 60 Nathan Taylor We picked Nathan up after Round 1 and his pace bowling and big hitting came in very useful. Nathan is all effort all the time. With work on batting technique the skies the limit.

Taylah Withers Taylah had a really strong season picking up the . Taylah took 5 wickets in the final game against Caringbah (4 Bowled). Taylan always chipped in with bat and her partnership with Ben took us Past Caringbah to Victory in the final game.

Emily Lawler Emily was struck down at times by injury. Emily captained us to our first victory of the year against Engadine. She also moved the field more than Brendan McCullum. Emily can do it all and I am excited to see her at full strength next season.

Aidan Whittaker Aidan took the first catch of the season and led the number of dabb’s completed throughout the year. Aidan spin bowling improved, and he worked hard on this at training. Aidan and Mel led us to victory with the batting effort against Engadine with 42 on a soaked ground – 0 fours or sixes in the innings, all run and highlighted with the 3 Mel made him run. Well done mate.

Aaron Hunter Our Wicket Keeper that on his day would not let anything by. With the bat Aaron chipped in with valuable runs. Also dynamic in the field and also putting pressure on batsmen.

Marcus Fry Pace, Spin, Can Bat – yes can do it all. Scored a great 50 against Gymea and would always try his heart out. Once in was hard to get out, so for next season take your time early and build the innings and you will score more tons.

Melody Gleeson Mel found the step up to A grade with the bowling a steep learning curve. Bad balls would be punished. No one worked harder than Mel in trying to improve and her bowling did improve and will be ready for next season. In regard to Mel’s batting she improved the most I have seen in a season. To go from C to A and hold her own is a credit to herself. Keep working hard and you will get the rewards.

Finally thank you to my players, you make coaching worthwhile even through you are all wombats at times. See you all next year at St Pats.

DANIEL HUNTER (Coach) and GREG HIBBINS (Manager)

The St Patricks 14B team had a good season during 2017/18. I was privileged enough to coach a fantastic group of boys who were dedicated to their cricket. The boys played well to record a few wins, and they all improved. I had a few run-ins with some biased coaches, but that did not deter from a great season. We had fun and we enjoyed our cricket. I hope to see all the boys back next season.

Ronan Ronan had a great season this year. His attitude to training and to playing was outstanding. Ronan regularly turned up, and always gave 100%. During the games, he wasn't scared to try something new, such as wicket keeping. He grew into that role very quickly and should look at doing it next season. Ronan's batting improved over the course of the season, and he knew when to defend and when to attack. Ronan's bowling was fantastic. He took crucial wickets and was not afraid to experiment: over the wicket, around the wicket, both ends of the pitch. In the end, this experimentation paid off, and he took a lot of important wickets for the team. Overall, Ronan had an awesome season.

Jeremy What can I say? Jeremy's season was utterly superb. He batted, bowled, and kept wicket. When Jeremy hit the ball, it stayed hit. His best knock came in the last game of the season, when he hit a cracking 59 while opening batting, which set up the win nicely for the team. His bowling was fast and always threatening, kind of like Mitchell Johnson's. His keeping throughout the season was amazing, as he always gave his all to stop every delivery. Jeremy's leadership qualities grew throughout the season. He was always conferring with the captain about bowling and field placements, and how it would benefit the team. He is a definite leader in the future. Jeremy also took out the batting award, which capped off a truly remarkable season.

Adrian Adrian's season was excellent. To get the most catches this season was an amazing achievement for him. Rarely did he drop one, but he gave his all to get to the catch. Adrian's bowling was quick, ferocious, and it took wickets. Adrian's fielding, whether it was in the slips or at deep midwicket, was consistently good. I was most impressed by his ability to run batsmen out from direct hits. He did it about three or four times during the season, and it changed the course of the match. Adrian's batting improved immensely, and by the end of the season he was getting bat on ball on 95% of the deliveries. Adrian also brought a lot of humour to the team, which livened up the matches and training. Maybe next season I'll get him to bat at three!!

Josh Josh's batting this season was reminiscent of Adam Gilchrist: purely destructive, and always for the benefit of the team. Whether he opened or batted at six, Josh's batting was always entertaining to watch. Josh's leadership skills flourished too, and he helped the captain to make the important choices with batting, bowling, and fielding. When I was unable to make training, he stepped up and showed that he is future leader for any side he plays in. Josh's bowling was consistently accurate, and he took wickets in most of the innings he bowled in. Josh's fielding in close was never without enthusiasm and passion, and it went a long way in stopping runs. Josh is definitely a future captain, and he showed it this season.

Armaan I was most impressed with Armaan's improvement this season. He strengthened both his batting and his bowling. Armaan's batting improvement allowed him to play a lot of shots. His best shots were his straight drives and off drives, which he hit with power and speed. His powerful strokes were a pleasure to watch, as it allowed Armaan to gain confidence. Armaan's bowling also improved. At the start of the season, he was bowling from a metre behind the crease, but by the end he was landing on the crease. He also got the ball to swing both ways. Armaan's bowling allowed him to be a threatening bowler consistently, especially when he opened the bowling. Armaan also held onto some terrific catches and stopped some crucial boundaries. His bowling, batting, fielding, and his determination made him a better person and player throughout the season.

Cameron Cam is a great young cricketer. He was always enthusiastic, and always wanted to bat. When he batted, Cam excelled. Unfortunately, he did not get a half-century (which he thoroughly deserved, I might add), but nonetheless he batted with freedom, intelligence and confidence. Cam was not scared to dig in, but he was also not afraid to play his shots. Cam's best innings came at Akuna Avenue, when he hit a magnificent 45, which included two massive sixes over square leg onto the roof of the clubhouse. That was glorious to watch. Cam's bowling was excellent too. Seldom did he bowl a bad ball. Cam's bowling consistently got the batsmen to play and miss. His fielding was beyond excellent. Cam chased down every run, had the safest pair of hands, and had a powerful throw to match. Cam possesses great leadership skills and has the ability to be a phenomenal leader.

Jed Firstly, congratulations to Jed on winning the bowling the bowling award. That is a great achievement to have. His bowling improved out of sight throughout the season, and it is still going. Jed took wickets in every match I saw. He bowled well no matter where in the order he bowled: opening the bowling, or bowling at the death. Jed's batting improved immensely too. Jed was capable of some big scores, and I believe that a fifty is right around the corner for him. When he captained, Jed was not afraid to try new things, and rarely were his decisions unsuccessful. Jed took some important catches and is still continuing to improve.

Spencer Spencer's season was a terrific season. Spencer's bowling, whether it was his Mitchell Johnson-like fast bowling, or his Shane Warne-like leg spin, improved out of sight. He was not afraid to bowl either style, and often interchanged between the two within the same over. It was successful too. When the ball turned, Spencer got wickets. When the ball swung, Spencer got wickets. Spencer never kept us in suspense (sorry, su-Spence) when he batted. His batting was awesome. Spencer batted with confidence, power, and loud calls. His captaincy was entertaining to watch, and he brought a lot of humour to the side. It was a pleasure having him in the side

Caleb Congratulations to Caleb for winning the coaches award. He had a really fantastic season. Despite some calls incorrectly going against him, he overcame those to really bat and bowl well. Caleb's leg spin monumentally improved throughout the season. I was most impressed with Caleb's initiative to get better with his bowling outside of training. Caleb tried different things: bowling around the wicket, dropping it short, pitching it up. It was truly awesome to see him trying new things. I was also amazed by his batting. His batting showed real confidence by the end of the season. He played some fine shots, and knew how to dig in. Caleb made a great captain and was tasked with counting the dot balls in one of our wins. He had a great season, and I hope next season will be another great one for Caleb.

Braydan A cricketer needs to have good cricketing prowess, but also a good mental state, and Braydan had these qualities in spades. He was a great addition to the team. Braydan made training fun. He never dismissed my advice and was always looking to go to the next level. Braydan bowled with consistency on a good line and length and had the ability to swing the ball. Braydan's batting was powerful, intelligent, and was done with a very traditional technique. His 52 not out was the first for the team in the season and was well deserved. Braydan spent a lot of time in the middle concentrating on getting his batting right. As a captain, Braydan excelled, and has the makings of the great leader.

Mason Mason had a terrific season. For a guy that had never played cricket before, Mason gave his all and had a go. He turned up to training every week and was always happy to bat and bowl. During matches, he survived some very hostile bowling when he batted, but he scored a few runs too. Mason was embraced by the other guys, and they always looked to help him get better. Hopefully he continues to play next season.

Om Om was only with the team for a few matches, but those matches were fruitful nonetheless. He took wickets, scored runs, and had fun in general. Om's commitment to the team could have been better, but when he was there he was a real team player. Om needs to decide if cricket is right for him, and whether he wants to make that commitment every week.

Brooklyn Rullis – 12 wickets, Ave 10.25, BB 4/24; 37 runs, HS 18, Ave 7.40. Brookie was the star with the ball this year taking almost double the wickets of her nearest team rivals. Using her height to advantage, she bowled a consistent line and length with great results. Her “4 for” was very impressive. Good cricket brain, definitely the best organiser of the field and most competent runner between the wickets. Brookie was our most reluctant batter but still managed two great knocks of 17 & 18, one ensuring that we got over the line for our only win.

Angus Carmalt – 6 wickets, Ave 16.17, BB 2/2; 72 runs, HS 18, Ave 8.00 Gussy “aka the Spin King” was the team’s only tweaker and had a breakthrough year with the ball. Hesitant to bowl spin at the start of the year, he had the batsman in trouble more often than not. As one of our keepers, his overs were limited but did a great job picking up key wickets. A great offie in the making. Gus was also handy with the gloves taking 4 keeper catches for the season. With the bat, Gussy showed a handsome selection of shots and was always happy to slot in where required. He often opened with Liam and on more than one occasion they laid the foundation of our second innings to avoid the outright defeat!

Matt Evans – 7 wickets, Ave 19, BB 3/4; 127 runs, HS 40, Ave 12.70 Matty was one of our “quicks” this year and really impressed me with the ball. Hit the bat hard and didn’t mind the odd intimidating “beamer” as well. Super keen kid who always wants the ball in his hand which the coach admired. His 3 for 4 was a great spell. he coach doesn’t want to be facing him in a few years! With the bat, improved greatly throughout the season with the highlight a knock of 40 runs during a partnership of some 60 runs with Ben. A formidable all rounder, great season Matty!

James Begg – 7 wickets, Ave 19.57, BB 2/8; 23 runs, HS 6, Ave 3.29 Beggsy was generally one of our opening bowlers and I thought he had a great year with the ball. World’s longest run up, but great rhythm, speed, and can swing the ball. Took a couple of screamers in the field too. Couldn’t catch a cold at training so at least he saved it for game day! Not keen to bat early in the season, Beggsy came good later on and was the “go to” batsman when we needed someone to stay in for a while. His forward defence seemed to be straight out of the MCC coaching manual! Unlucky not have scored a few more runs this season.

Ryan Barbuto – 5 wickets, Ave 22.2, BB 2/12; 58 runs, HS 21, Ave 8.29 For a guy that didn’t train once (due to other commitments), Barby had a really good year with the ball in his second year of cricket. A solid 5 wickets and a few more gone begging with a few dropped catches off his bowling. Ryan impressed on several occasions with the bat and in the field due to his natural hand eye co-ordination. His highlight innings was 21 runs not out and he would have gone on to score plenty more if his teammates hadn’t fallen over around him. With a bit more practice mate you could become a genuine cricketer!

Ben Verden – 6 wickets, Ave 22.33, BB 1/3; 187 runs, HS 38, Ave 20.78 I thought Benny really built well through the season with his bowling. Beautiful to watch – great action, rhythm, speed etc. Poetry in motion! Picked up the batting award due to his consistency throughout the season, but I actually think he’s a better bowler. With the bat, Ben was our most reliable batsman all season and proved a headache even for the rep bowlers in our opposing teams. His partnership with Liam set up our solitary victory for the year. A genuine all rounder and deserved winner of our team’s Players Player award. Great season Benny.

Fletcher Alpen – 4 wickets, Ave 23.25, BB 1/2; 61 runs, HS 18, Ave 6.10 This was Fletch’s best year with the ball in my eyes. He went for the least runs in the team – only 93. Picked up a yard of pace, nice full length on the stumps, and hard to hit. If the umpires actually gave LBW’s he would have picked up plenty more pegs. The trademark of Fletch’s batting was the cross bat slog from outside off toward the midwicket boundary, but he could also strike a formidable cut shot. He struck several impressive boundaries this season, most notably when he top scored for us against the team coming first late in the season. He was on track for a big innings that day but unluckily copped a more than questionable stumping decision from a frustrated opposition coach.

Mitch Wyatt – 6 wickets, Ave 26.67, BB 2/4; 13 runs, HS 5, Ave 1.63 Another of our “reluctant” trainers, I thought Mitchy actually bowled really well this year. A little wayward at times but has that really good ball in him which netted 6 scalps for the season. Got some good batsmen out too. Kept the team entertained in the field with his storytelling and would always lead the celebrations of each wicket. Was one of only a few to produce a runout all season. Could hold up one end with the bat which was handy on several occasions.

Jonah Ford – 4 wickets, Ave 29.5, BB 2/16; 31 runs, HS 8, Ave 3.44 One of the most improved for me, Jonah picked up our Coaches Award. No fuss, nice economic bowler, always happy to bowl into wind. Can swing the ball too. Also one of our best fielders – stopped a lot of runs and took two impressive catches in the last game. With the bat, Jonah started the season with a bit of a baseballer’s swing but by the end of the season looked as though he’d played cricket all of his life. He was as comfortable with the willow as any of our middle order batsman and frustrated many of our opposition bowlers. Good year mate!

Ryan Moore – 6 wickets, Ave 30.5, BB 1/10; 20 runs, HS 7, Ave 2.86 Old Mooresy, where do I start! Putting all the joking and clowning aside, the kid can actually bowl when he switches on. Had a couple of really good spells towards the end of the year. 6 wickets and probably the most dropped off his bowling so should have been more. Very encouraging of the other boys out in the field which was great. With the bat, it was “go hard or go home” with an attempt to slog the ball into cow corner from every delivery. Unlucky not to have had a few more bowled to him in the slot!!

Leon Rojas – 4 wickets, Ave 33.5, BB 2/14; 175 runs, HS 50, Ave 14.58 The Wild Thing was our other keeper for the year. Frightened the daylights out of the boys when he bowled in the nets. Has really good speed and bounce. With a little more consistency with his line, and the occasional ball on the stumps (and not at the Batsman’s head), the big fella would be lethal! With the bat, Leon impressed early with a 50 (one of only two all season for our team) in the first game. He continued with an aggressive attitude to batting all season and was entertaining for the crowd, most innings smashing at least one boundary Big Bash style.

Jayden Greig – 4 wickets, Ave 35.75, BB 2/6; 27 runs, HS 15, Ave 3.38 Definitely the most improved bowler in the team. His 2 for 6 in the final game (bowling both top batters) was a testament to that. Really improved his consistency towards the end, showing that bowling at the stumps can pay results. Keep it up Jaydo!! He also had a crack at wicketkeeper for one innings and snared himself a stirring caught behind! With the bat, Jayden was the ultimate team player, always happy to slot it wherever it suited the team. His top score of 15 came in an admirable partnership of 56 with Leon in the first game, raising the spirits of the boys for the rest of the season.

Liam Forward – 4 wickets, Ave 37.75, BB 2/13; 152 runs, HS 80, Ave 15.20 As a bowler, “Uncle” made a great opening batsman! Only joking mate, I thought you were one of the most improved bowlers as well. A couple of really good spells this year. A stand out in the field also picking up the most catches (7). Definitely our best sledger too! Liam regularly volunteered for opening batsman and made the position his own. His 80 run innings were the highest for our team all year. Although one of only a few players who could comfortably score runs on both sides of the wicket, it was his majestic straight drives which were most pleasing to the eye, especially when watching from down at the umpire’s end.

It was a pleasure to see the team enjoy their cricket each Saturday without too much concern for the results. Most pleasing from a coaches’ point of view were the comments we regularly received from our opposition players and managers regarding our good sportsmanship.

Back Row (L-R): Duncan Howard(Manager), Nelson Howard, Jai Chapman, Ethan Tanner, Tom Mulligan, Blake Hurford, Damian Kleemann, Alwin Lee, Hamish Thomas (Assistant Coach), Dave Mulligan(Coach). Front Row (L-R): Liam Van Ravenstein, James Gair, Keith (Team Mascot), Chris Giles, Harry Cook, Harry Marr.

Before I get into the season’s review, a couple of outstanding items: Firstly, my sincere heartfelt thanks to Hamish Thomas, who was my assistant coach in 2017/18. His unbridled enthusiasm and deep love for the game of cricket rubbed off on all of the players, even when he unleashed his horror training session(s) on them!

Secondly, thanks to Duncan Howard, our team manager during the season. He never said ‘no’ to any job that I assigned him and his experience and good humour was deeply appreciated.

And finally, with my son, Tom, signing off on his junior cricket career, it also marks the end of the line for me. I have thoroughly enjoyed coaching all the teams under my care since, and including, season 2010/11. I have met so many wonderful, generous and loyal people as a direct result and I hope those friendships are maintained.

It’s been a blast, it’s been fun, but now it’s time to have sleep-ins on junior cricket Saturday mornings. But hey, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s review the past 7 months: It wasn't until the end of 2017 that the team started to realise its full potential. And so began an impressive run of matches where the boys excelled in all departments of the game and played as a united group – all focussed on attaining that elusive slot in the Grand Final and ultimately winning the SSJCA 16B Premiership.

The strength of this XII lay in its top four batsmen along with a bowling attack, to which, on its day, opposition teams had no answer.

To finish the season with an incredible, exciting and tense win in the Grand Final over a determined Caringbah 16B(1) side was indeed icing on the cake. What a performance! What a team!

And now, the players, in batting order, who made up this formidable side:

Ethan Tanner Ethan scored in excess of 200 runs for the season in the tough position of opener. He always looked at ease at the crease and when he played his favourite cut shot through gully, it usually promised a good score. Strong off the back foot, Ethan displayed the correct technique required of an opening batsman and his half century against St Pats 16B(2)s was richly deserved. Sharing in an opening century partnership with Damian in the Grand Final, his 41 was a masterclass in skill & patience. Ethan can look forward to another fulfilling season in 2018/19.

Damian Kleemann An all-rounder possessed of extraordinary talent and potential, Damian was the most exciting to watch in a game. The sheer power with which he hit the ball was astonishing, whether along the ground or in the air. By season’s end, he was across how to build an innings and proof of that was deposited in the Grand Final where his outstanding innings of 85 as opener set up the team’s ultimate victory. His bowling was fearsome through sheer pace, and his economical final over in the GF sealed the premiership! Also, a gun in the field, I predict big things for this fine cricketer and have named him the recipient of this season's coach's award.

James Gair Our intrepid #3, James scored two half centuries and topped the batting aggregate with 240. A delightful stroke maker, his ability to score with shots all around the wicket stood him in good stead. His cameo of 35 from 33 balls in the Grand Final was a vital cog in the team’s success. He also showed immense skill with the ball in hand, particularly one morning at Woolooware when he took 4/10 against Caringbah B(2)s. A more-than-useful keeper, he regularly stood in for Harry Cook and his captaincy, which he shared with Tom Mulligan, was of a very high standard. Well played, James, on a most successful junior cricketing career.

Page 30 of 60 Tom Mulligan Tom this season concentrated on becoming a specialist #4 batsman. He succeeded magnificently, and opposition teams had very little idea of how to remove him from the crease. His topping the batting averages with 49.4 amply demonstrates how highly he prized his wicket. The anchor in many innings, Tom possessed a fine array of shots, particularly through the cover area. His slow, loopy, deadly accurate bowling came to the fore with a 4/10 against St Pats B(2)s. His captaincy was of the highest order and he led the team admirably with astute bowling changes and field placements in the Grand Final. Well done on an outstanding junior career, Tom.

Alwin Lee The quiet man of the team, Alwin was always lurking about, ready to strike with bat or ball. Sure enough, in Round 13 against Bangor, he claimed the 1st 4 wickets to fall and was mainly responsible for that team scoring just 27. In the Grand Final, his 4/30 from 10 overs was hugely instrumental in the team’s victory. His batting could also be destructive, but the spinners usually found him out before he could inflict too much damage. Always an asset in the field, I hope Alwin returns to cricket next season in the men's comp. He would be a fine addition to any side.

Chris Giles If the team ever need a gee-up in the field, it was no trouble to find Chris supplying just that with oodles of encouragement from his regular position at mid-on, where he took many fine catches during the season. His batting could be hit and miss, but with a devil- may-care attitude, it was no surprise to witness quick cameos from this popular cricketer. Another who ends his junior playing days this season, but I have the feeling that St Pats will be ‘hearing’ from him for quite some time yet!

Harry Cook Every team has its character – a player who, just by their sheer presence, brings a smile to the face of everyone he comes in contact with. Such is the power of ‘Cookie’ – it would be hard to find anyone who doesn’t like him! Still reluctant to don the wicketkeeping pads & gloves, he continued to display outstanding form behind the stumps and when he got the rare opportunity to bowl, he usually ended up with a couple of wickets for his efforts. His batting was quiet this season, mainly through lack of opportunity, but he didn’t seem to mind too much - just as long as he got a bowl. Well played, Harry – it’s been fun!

Liam Van Ravenstein A player with loads of potential in all departments of the game. Liam’s bowling really came to the fore this season as his 9 wicket tally attests. His batting highlight came against Bangor Comets with a fine innings of 23 at #8 when, along with Tom, he managed to turn a looming defeat into a stunning victory. Ever reliable in the field, he was inspirational at point in the Grand Final and saved at least 20-30 runs with his safe hands and strong arm. Liam can look forward to impressing once more in 2018/19.

Blake Hurford Our main man with the ball. Usually to be found opening the bowling attack, he always sent shivers through opposing batsmen with his sheer speed. Nicknamed “The Tornado” last season, he maintained that status by claiming 14 wickets and thereby topping the “wickets taken” column. Like Cookie, Blake was starved of batting opportunities, but he proved, once again, to be handy in the field, marked by a couple of remarkable catches. Well done, Blake, on a fine junior career that covered 8 seasons.

Harry Marr A young man possessed of immense talent. If he ever realises his full potential, then look out! The thing I liked about Harry was his remarkable ability to land the ball on a perfect line and length time after time after time. Batsmen had the devil’s own time keeping the ball from smashing into their stumps. Harry deservedly won “best bowling average” for the season, with his 10 wickets costing just 9.50 runs each. By season’s end, his batting was coming into its own, with a mix of solid defence and attacking bravado! Nice work, mate!

Nelson Howard Confidence will never be a problem for Nelson! He has it in spades and if you are ever running short of it, I’m sure Nelson would gladly share some of his with you! He could often be found opening the bowling for his team and his effort of taking 2/4 in St Pats 16B(2)s second innings in Round 1 helped his team to a surprise outright win. Batting wise, Nelson displayed good defence, but needs to attack the bowling more if he is to score handy runs down the order. By season’s end, he was taking catches left, right and centre to top off a pleasing 2017/18. Way to go, Nelson!

Jai Chapman Jai was the team’s specialist off spinner, taking over the reins from Hamish Thomas. Jai was always able to extract considerable turn on unforgiving synthetic turf and his bowling in the Grand Final was of the highest calibre with his first 5 overs costing just 10 runs! Even his later overs prevented the rampaging batsmen from lowering their target run rate. I sincerely hope that he continues his cricket journey in men’s cricket so that he can dazzle more opposition teams with his offies. Well done, mate!

COACHES AWARD: DAMIAN KLEEMANN

I must fly…goodbye!

Page 31 of 60 UNDER 16B – Grand Final

ST PATS 16B(1) VS CARINGBAH 16B(1) 10TH March 2018 at GWAWLEY NORTH

There’s always an extra added ‘something’ when Grand Final day arrives, especially if your team is in it! No exceptions with our mighty XII, as the coach has lined up Darren Smith, Level 3 Coach extraordinaire, to put the boys through a pre-match warm up in order to get them up to speed and ready for the big game and the big day ahead. An 8am start ensured that everyone was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Catching and ground fielding were the areas worked on and a fine speech by Darren about the importance of team over individual was icing on the cake in the boys’ readiness to take on their opponent, Caringbah 16B(1)s, the minor premiers. Some fun drills were then implemented by assistant coach, Hamish Thomas, in the following half hour. With Wayne, our umpire for the day, introducing himself around, it was then time for the toss.

The respective captains, Tom Mulligan & Will Thomas strode out to the middle with Wayne. Up went the coin, Tom called correctly and decided that St Pats would bat first. With our openers, Ethan Tanner & Damian Kleemann having already notched up 200 runs plus each during the normal rounds, it was going to be an absorbing initial period of play as they came up against two fine bowlers in Jimmy Bray & Mitch Pauling. Let’s go!

Our openers, perhaps inspired by the efforts of their Australia counterparts, Warner & Bancroft (0/23 after 14 overs) in the 2nd test versus South Africa, got off to a most cautious start against an attack that was looking for that vital early breakthrough. In fact, the comparison is very valid as Ethan & Damian had recorded 27 in the first 14 overs! A measure of how much Damian’s game has grown over the season can be made from his facing 15 balls and scoring just a single. Patience has its rewards. Ethan was just as watchful and was starting to show us how he rises to the occasion in a Grand Final by thwarting the attack with a deft mix of attack & defense.

Not even the dreaded drinks break could separate our valiant two and the score began to take on the air of respectability as it steadily climbed to 0/40 after 19 overs. At the innings break, Ethan & Damian walked from the field with a scoreline of 0/54 behind them. This was the first time they had not been separated within the first 25 overs of play, their previous best being in Round 13 when they put on 51 from 16 overs. Apart from the two opening fast bowlers, others invited to the crease were Connor Crowe, Ryan Le Clerc, Zac McGrath, Zac McLoughlin, Matt Olufsen and Brad Driscoll. For all of them though, no joy. But, of course, we don’t really get a true appreciation of how a game is going until both teams have batted. Replying to an unbeaten half century opening partnership was not going to be a walk in the park for Caringbah! And so it proved! But the

Page 32 of 60 first half dozen overs gave no indication of the turmoil to follow. Zac McLoughlin & Brad Driscoll took a leaf out of our openers’ book and batted cautiously against the pace of Alwin Lee & Nelson Howard. 0/8 after 6 overs. Alwin was bowling so well (0/3 after 3 overs) that the skipper gave him another over. Bang! McLoughlin’s middle stump knocked over and Caringbah were 1/9. At the other end, Harry Marr had taken over from Nelson and despite being on the receiving end of some lusty blows from new batsman, Matt Olufson, soon found success when Driscoll backed away and allowed a Marr delivery to clean him up! Caringbah 2/18. This soon became 3/19 when Zac McGrath recorded a golden duck thanks to “The Tornado”, Blake Hurford bowling the newly arrived batsman. It was a big effort from Blake, who we later found out was off-colour all day with an illness he had been struggling with over the course of the previous 24 hours.

With Caringbah reeling at 3/19 after just 11 overs, they were looking for a special innings from their star batter, Matt Olufsen. Matt had been selected to play “A” grade at the start of the season but wanted to play with his mates in “B” grade. This was allowed by the SSJCA, but with the proviso that he retire at 50 in a 100 overs game. He could return once the 9th wicket fell. Matt was now joined by skipper, Will Thomas, and together these two resuscitated their team’s precarious position until Will fell to a catch by Blake off the bowling of James Gair just 2 overs before lunch. Caringbah 4/50 and still in a lot of trouble. Daniel Shaw now joined Matt and together, they scrapped their way to the break with their team being 1 run ahead of St Pats but 4 wickets worse off!

Special mention must be made of Jai Chapman’s off spinning effort where his 3 overs before lunch cost a miserly 5 runs and his 2 overs immediately after the break cost a further 5. Against a batsman of Olufsen’s stature, this was indeed a most commendable effort. Another fantastic spread had been laid out for the players, parents and supporters of St Pats. It was organized with skill by Jayne Giles and ably assisted by Lyndel Cook, Kath Tanner, Fiona Hurford and Claire Foreshaw. I must also acknowledge the hard work put in by the dads in erecting tents/shade coverings in the morning. Thanks especially to Mick Tanner, Peter Van Ravenstein, Duncan Howard and Chin Lee.

It always a delight to see friends and followers turn up at the Grand Final. On this special day, I had the pleasure of seeing Warren Daley, Adam Young, Matt Whyte, Brett Bryant, Sid Benjamin, David Richardson, Dean Blacker, Peter Smithson, Axel Smithson, MJ Whyte, Lynne Willis, Jordan Willis, Callum Fisher, Sandra Marshall and Huon Whittingham as well as the regular parents of our marvelous St Pats team. Thank you all for coming and showing the boys your support. I was asked during the luncheon break what I thought would be a good, competitive score for St Pats to defend. Bearing in mind that most Grand Finals were low scoring affairs, I opted for a scoreline somewhere between 100 & 120. Well, that was indeed a most conservative estimate in light of what was to follow!

Upon resumption, it was a repeat of what we had witnessed in the first morning session. Ethan & Damian continued to put a high price on their respective wicket and carried on in a most defiant manner, denying the Caringbah bowlers any sense of relief. Bray & Pauling were again greeted with broad bats as our two openers showed no mercy. After 30 overs, the score read 0/68. Now followed a steady increase in the run rate and the score swelled by 28 runs in the following 5 overs. And then, in Brandt Campbell’s 2nd over, a big milestone occurred. Damian brought up his maiden SSJCA half century to the admiration and applause of the crowd. It had been an innings of great restraint from a batsman who likes to “get on with it”. But, to his credit, this was just the innings that his team needed and, in fact, contained just the one boundary! But, in the same over, we lost Ethan, who was caught by Olufsen for a gritty 41 from 109 deliveries. Ethan, of course, was very upset on being dismissed, but when told that he and Damian had put on exactly 100 for the 1st wicket, his disappointment turned to proud achievement! And the comparison with Australia’s effort in the second test proves to be eerily similar. The test team lost their first wicket at 98. Wow!

With the arrival of the vice-captain to the crease, ITS GO TIME!! James is immediately away with a fast run single and Damian decides to open his shoulders to see what happens! And fair enough too! With just 14 overs remaining and 9 wickets in the shed, this tactic seems most appropriate. In the space of 10 deliveries faced by him, Damian jumps from 50 to 78! His fierce strokes, particularly through the mid-wicket/cow corner area, are astonishing and in the blink of an eye, St Pats have gone from 1/100 to be 1/129 after 38 overs! A couple of more singles plus a boundary and then Damian is gone, stumped by Will Thomas off McLoughlin for an outstanding 85 from 125 balls including 8 boundaries. Amidst loud cheering and applause, a guard of honour was formed by his team-mates as Damo exited the field of play. It had been a perfectly crafted opener’s innings and more of the same can be expected in Damian’s final season of junior cricket in 2018/19.

Tom, our skipper, comes and goes in the quest for quick runs, but Alwin manages to hang around and support James as they put on 17 for the 4th wicket. Chris Giles suffers a similar fate to Tom and with the score now at 5/161 in the 46th over, Liam Van Ravenstein, the birthday boy, is also on the lookout for quick runs and soon gets underway with a well hit 2. At the other end, James is going about the business of maintaining the run rate and his shots all around the wicket are giving the opposition more cause for concern. Liam perishes for 4 in the 47th over and then Harry Cook, in the next over, is cleaned up by Mitch Pauling without troubling the scorers.

Page 33 of 60 The final two overs see the score increase by 21 thanks to a couple of deftly placed boundaries from James, with solid support by Blake. James finishes undefeated on 35 from 33 deliveries and his cameo innings has been a vital part in getting his team to a seemingly unbeatable total of 7/193. Surely, with this total behind them, St Pats can’t possibly lose! But hang on a minute, what if Caringbah think otherwise? Then, my friends, we might just have a game of cricket on our hands!! Before moving on, it would be remiss of me not to mention Zac McLoughlin’s 5 wicket haul. This ‘Michelle’ would have made up for him being savaged in a T20 game at Kurnell just before Xmas when he took 0/36 from 4 overs. Kleemann, Tanner & Gair all helped themselves to sixes off his bowling that day, but his return in this grand Final of 5/39 must have gone a long way to putting that bad memory to bed for a long time! OK, Caringbah resume with Olufsen & Shaw at the crease. And sure enough, Matt continues on his confident way, steadily accumulating runs, including a towering on-side six off Blake in the 27th over.

As Olufsen, slowly but surely, bats his way to a red ink 50, our bowlers struggle to make a vital break through. Shaw is playing an intelligent innings, content to support the “star” by blocking anything remotely dangerous and scoring the odd single every now and then. Eventually, Olufsen reaches 50 and must retire. This happens in the 31st over with the score on 83. The opportunity now exists for St Pats’ bowlers to carve through the remaining batsmen without worrying too much about ‘you-know-who’. Eventually, the 5th wicket falls in the 36th over as Jaiden Lloyd bunts one back to Nelson Howard who takes a smart caught and bowled chance. Caringbah now 5/97, needing another 97 in 14 overs with 5 wickets remaining. 3 runs later and the mainstay, Daniel Shaw, is dismissed when he hits one straight to point where Jai Chapman makes good ground to collect it on the full and thereby giving Alwin his 2nd wicket for the match. Caringbah perilously placed at 6/100.

But now, some tail-end resolve rears its head and St Pats have to work hard to gain progress in their search for victory. Campbell & Bray combine in a 22 run partnership across 5 overs, until Campbell is snapped up by the ever-alert James off Harry Marr’s bowling. Jimmy Bray is joined by his fellow opening bowler, Mitch Pauling, and together, these two go about the business of getting Caringbah’s score up to speed. Mind you, the target run rate is now a challenging 8 runs an over. As each over comes and goes, these two batsmen manage to score the required run rate, but never quite succeed in lowering it. 8 an over remains the required run rate and James, Liam, Harry and Jai cannot grab the important break-through. Eventually, in the 46th over, Alwin comes up victorious when Blake takes a catch off Jimmy Bray to make the score 8/159. Bray has batted out of his skin and is crushed when he has to go, with his team still short of victory. They now need 35 from 27 balls.

This is turning out to be closer than anyone imagined. Tense and nervous, the coach is happy to be scoring, otherwise he would be pacing up and down like a wild beast. This is not a time for the faint of heart! The pressure upon new batsman, Connor Crowe, must have been immense, particularly that target run rate of 8 being a major source of consternation for the Caringbah side. But Connor makes light of the situation by scoring a 4 from the first delivery that he faces! The 4th last over results in….8 runs. Of course it does!! The 3rd last over is Alwin’s 10th and final over. The 2nd ball is too good for Crowe and he hears the death rattle. Caringbah now 9/174, still 20 short of victory with 16 balls left. But it means that you-know-who (aka Matt Olufsen) can now return to the crease.

Alwin finishes his junior career by allowing just 3 runs from his last 4 deliveries. His final figures of 4/30 are testimony to a grand effort. Wickets taken at important junctures, economic bowling and a fierce determination to help steer his team to a Grand Final win marked a superb performance by the ‘quiet man’ of the team. Now just 2 overs/12 balls left and Caringbah still need 17 with the last pair at the wicket. You want drama…you’ve got it!

The second last over is bowled by Jai and amidst great tension and excitement, the two batsmen score 9. It’s about here that I must draw attention to the outstanding effort of Liam Van Ravenstein. Stationed at point, a crucial fielding position, his ground fielding was exemplary. Time after time, he would stop the ball from going through to the boundary, he would stop batters from stealing a second run or cause them not to run at all. By my reckoning, he saved his team 20-30 runs – how good was that effort? I reckon that’s tops!!

So, it’s down to the last over. The captain has a crucial decision on who he gives the ball to, as the batsmen need to score 7 to tie and 8 to win. A tie would give Caringbah the trophy as they are minor premiers. The decision is made… the ball is thrown to Damian, whose only previous over in the match went for 5. This is tightrope stuff with a blindfold added for extra measure!!

Olufson can only score a single from the first ball. Pauling blocks the next and takes a single on the 3rd ball. Dangerman, Olufsen on strike now with 5 to tie and six to win off the final 3 balls. Holy Moley, this is TOO close for comfort. But Damian is more than Olufsen can cope with! He fails to score from the next 2 balls, still leaving 6 to score a victory off the last ball for his team.

Damian steams in, bowls and all Olufsen can do is make poor contact with the ball as it dribbles past Cookie, who quickly gathers and runs to the stumps to emphatically run out Pauling. Olufsen remains undefeated on 61. It’s all over. St Pats have won by 5 runs in a nail biter! What a finish! What a game! Credit to both sides for an outstanding day’s cricket – almost 400 runs scored for the loss of 17 wickets. The spectators certainly got their money’s worth!

So many worthwhile performances, some of which I have already alluded to, but also worthy of mention are Harry Marr’s 2 wickets for 26, Blake’s one wicket and 2 catches, James’ first 5 overs costing just 5 runs and Tom’s astute captaincy with spot on bowling changes and pin-point accurate field placings.

Page 34 of 60 A great team effort from our boys, who are greeted with a guard of honour, formed by the parents. I am very proud of each and every one of them and that includes people who had a quiet one, like Chris Giles, our official mouthpiece and gee-up man in the field and the ever-reliable Harry Cook behind the stumps.

I am writing this 2 weeks exactly after the event. The magic still hasn’t worn off and I doubt if it ever will. It sees the end of my tenure as Junior Coach after 8 very satisfying years of being associated with our family club, St Patrick’s Sutherland. During that time, I had the honour of coaching teams to 5 Grand Finals and enjoyed victory in 4 of them. Not a bad effort for an old bloke, but you’ve got to have the right cattle under you to enjoy success, as any former jockey will tell you! But this latest Grand Final win was without a doubt the most dramatic, exciting, tense and fun match that I have been involved in during my time with St Pats. What a note to finish on!

Before I go, my heartfelt thanks to Hamish Thomas, my assistant coach throughout the season. Without his help and unbounded enthusiasm, the boys would have not have enjoyed the success they did!

And also, to Duncan Howard, my manager and all-round good guy. He helped out in so many ways, whether it was umpiring, scoring, bowling to the guys in the nets or just being Duncan. Cheers, mate! That’s all. Thank you everyone, it’s been fun!

Firstly, a big thanks to all the boys this season, they trained and played with a positive attitude and a level of enjoyment that made the season great fun for us all.

This year we saw some great play from the existing players and the new boys to the team stepped up and showed they had some great ability and tremendous commitment to improve week on week. We saw Brandon and Luke’s bowling go from strength to strength with a steady line that helped keep runs to a minimum, Evans batting from the start to the end of the season was a highlight for us all to watch, from a fidgety beginning to an outstanding opening bat – amazing improvement.

We had the usual suspects back up again with Zac again tacking wicket after wicket, Robbie’s pace attack had many batters jumping for fear, Ray and Tanner as our stalwarts ensuring when we needed batters to stay at the crease they could be depended upon. Alex’s new found pace was impressive and will only get quicker as he learns to use his long arms to generate more pace. Then we Ashley whose enthusiastic approach to speed cricket, he never slowed down. Matthew again showed us some impressive bowling by switching from spin to pace at will, totally bewildering the batsman. Frankie showed the umpires how easy it was to give LBWs with his continued desire to stand square in front.

On the stumps mind boggling, Lochie “The Destroyer” appeared from nowhere this year tacking several great wickets, and lastly Callum who no matter how many times we tell to play a delicate game understands only one way, hit the leather of the ball, always fun to watch and his 5 all run one of the funniest things we saw all year.

Again, I would just like to close with two things – a big thanks to the boys for the great final season before you start to play men’s and finally a reminder that our biggest highlight was the win over Big Dave Mulligan – ah the sweat smell of victory. Opps and of course thanks to Steve the wonder scorer, best pen man in the club…

Page 40 of 60 TEAM REPORTS – Seniors 2017 / 2018

ST PATS C1 (DR)

It was a very enjoyable season of cricket for the team – finishing Minor Premiers – but unfortunately losing the Final to the Miranda Magpies.

Similar to prior seasons, the cricket was fun, however the most enjoyable part of the season was always the camaraderie and banter amongst the team at training and on game days – a great team environment that led to positive results on the field.

The team played consistent cricket throughout the season, surpassing our previous best result of a semi-final appearance in 2015/16. We started the season well with three wins against Bosco, the other St Pats team and Bangor Comets in the first three rounds. However, the Bye in round 4 halted out momentum and it was disappointing to lose against Gymea in round 5. The team managed to get ourselves back on the rails and won 3 out of the 4 one-day games before Christmas – with the other one-dayer being a wash-out against Miranda.

The post-Christmas competition is always interesting, and this season didn’t disappoint. The results of the pre-Christmas games had Miranda and the two St Pats teams leading the competition with a fair gap to the other teams in the competition. However, too much Christmas pudding had an adverse effect on the leading teams, with all three surprisingly losing a few games each in January and early-February. This resulted in the bottom-half of the ladder closing the gap and it would be a scrap in the final round to determine who would make the finals. The top two teams were playing each other to determine who would be Minor Premier (us v Miranda) and the results from other games would determine whether the other St Pats team would hold onto third spot on the ladder. Unfortunately, Bangor’s continued post-Christmas run of wins saw them leap into third spot and into the semi-finals at the expense of the other St Pats team.

Fortunately, we managed to hold off a determined Miranda team in the final round to clinch the Minor Premiership. We batted first and thanks to a huge late innings batting performance from Aaron Hooker (83 runs, 6 sixes, 4 fours) resulted in us posting 7/251 off our 50 overs. Although we managed some early wickets, Miranda dug in, but eventually just fell short at 8/235. It had been a great performance in the field with Miranda threatening throughout their innings to overhaul our total.

Less superlatives can be said about our re-match against Miranda two weeks later in the Final. The scoresheet indicates that Miranda won the Final convincingly, however we only have ourselves to blame for letting Miranda off the hook when we had captured early wickets and they were struggling to score runs. Although our bowlers were bowling great lines and creating chances, it was disappointing that the team dropped quite a few catches. We were made to pay for our mistakes when batting conditions were not as optimum on day 2 and Miranda also bowled well. We were eventually bowled out for 83 chasing 166.

Page 41 of 60 We were fortunate to have a long team list this season as players picked up some significant injuries – the most notable being Joe Silverwood’s knee injury suffered in round 10 whilst batting against Bangor that put him out for the remainder of the season. This was a significant blow to the team as Joe is a key all rounder and his skills were missed.

There were some great team performances throughout the season, particularly the win against Como-Jannali in round 6 defending our low total of 130. We managed to bowl Como-Jannali out for 120 when they were well placed at 3/95 with plenty of overs in hand. Great bowling performances by Sebastian Ungvary (6/23) and Axel Smithson (3/12) as well as terrific fielding on the day resulted in a memorable win.

Notable batting performances for the team during the season were the magnificent 134 (9 sixes, 15 fours) by Jamaine Melchior in round 2 off not many balls and half centuries during the season to David Richardson (3), Murray Selcraig (2), Si Jackson (2), Joe Silverwood, Chris Karykides and Aaron Hooker.

The team has a big contingent of bowlers with everyone picking up wickets, however the highest wicket-takers were Jamaine Melchior (19), MJ Whyte (15), Murray Selcraig (14), Sebastian Ungvary (14) and Axel Smithson (11). Notable performances in the field were achieved by Damian Johnstone (8 catches, 1 stumping), Jamaine Melchior (8 catches, 1 run-out), David Richardson (5 catches, 3 run-outs), Joe Silverwood (5 catches, 2 run-outs) and Si Jackson (5 catches, 2 run-outs).

The batting awards for the season were awarded to Si Jackson (highest total) and David Richardson (highest average), whilst the bowling awards went to Jamaine Melchior (most wickets) and Hamish Thomas (lowest average).
