PRESIDENTS REPORT

Season 2016/17 has come and gone and we are on the eve of season 2017/18. Last season the Association had 66 sides from 14 Clubs.

Congratulations to all the Premiers and Runners-Up and to the individual trophy winners.

Thank You to our Secretary Michael Mooney for all his assistance throughout the season. It’s a hard job and Michael did an exemplary job.

A big thank you to Allan Lofthouse who kept the Association results. Some captains need to ensure their results are entered correctly and on time to make Allan’s job easier, but he did a sterling job with that hindrance.

Thanks to Lance Taylor for ensuring the Association is financially secure and thanks to our Vice-Presidents Dean Martin and Adrian Stefani for their help and guidance throughout the year and to all the other members of the Executive my sincere thanks for all your efforts over the past season.

My thanks to the Junior Association and the Grade Club for their continued support. I must express my thanks to Dave Robinson President of the Sutherland Shire Cricket Umpires Association and Lance Taylor the umpires delegate for their co-operation and support during the season.

This season we entered a Martin and Telegraph Shield team for the NSWDCA representative season and they performed very well with the Martin Shield team being eliminated in the quarter final and the Telegraph Shield team winning defeating Blacktown in the final at Glenn McGrath Oval – well done boys.

Last but not least my thanks to Sutherland Shire Council for their assistance with the grounds during the season, especially Kellie, Anne and Emi in the Sports Services Unit.

In conclusion, I hope you enjoy the off season and I hope to see you all back for season 2017/18

Noel Taplin President

SECRETARYS REPORT

Having had the opportunity to read the reports of Noel Taplin and Allan Lofthouse. These reports are comprehensive and there are only a couple of things I would like to add regarding the season just completed and the future.

Thank you for the work put in by all committee members to ensure that the SSCA competitions are run smoothly for the benefit of all players. Your commitment and contributions are very much appreciated.

Once again there were some minor disruptions while Council carried out necessary ground improvements as part of the ongoing 5 year plan in conjunction with the SSJCA and Sutherland Council.

We are in ongoing discussions with Sutherland Council, the Grade Club and the SSJCA regarding upgrading of grounds & for 2018 and beyond.

There will be significant changes for cricket in the Shire in the new season with the introduction of the Laws of Cricket 2017 Code, changeover to MyCricket for registrations and match recording and the possibility of changing some of the formats for men’s cricket.

Thank you to our major sponsor Kookaburra, to Sutherland Council for their on-going support of cricket in the Shire. Special thanks to Tom Croucher for assistance with Cricket On-Line and liaison with Council.

Congratulations to all premiership winning teams and individual award winners for the season.

SSCA RECORDER AND COMPETITION MANAGER’S REPORT

The 2016/17 SSCA Cricket season commenced with the registrations & grading of 66 teams from 14 affiliated Clubs in the Sutherland Shire. This was a drop off of 5 teams from the previous season. A total of 1284 players were finally registered in the nominated teams & this saw the SSCA competitions being compiled into 10 competitions comprising 8 x 7 team competitions & 2 x 5 team competitions.

Late registration of players throughout the season saw a total of 291 players being added to teams across the 14 Clubs/66 teams in the SSCA. This number still remains too high & is a definite problem especially when Clubs/teams wish to register players without first checking prior statistics of these players for the lower grades.

The problem of highly disproportionate numbers of players in teams, some with over 20 odd players, has also seen a number of disappointed players not having sufficient games to qualify them for any Semi Finals’/Finals’ games that the teams may have achieved. It is unfortunate that the SSCA Management Committee has had to refuse permission for players to play in the Finals’ series of games because they have not played enough games or have been registered too late.

Grades with two teams from the one Club are also another unfortunate occurrence, but with some of the bigger clubs having so many players & teams registered, this is unavoidable.

It is also important to report that there were 3 X Forfeitures of games & no less than 8 x Duty Failures across the grades that had occurred throughout the 2016/17 season. These occurrences are not acceptable.

It was also the very sad & unfortunate task of the SSCA Management Committee to have to de-register a team from one of their competitions due to repeated serious breaches of the SSCA Bylaws. These consistent breaches cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

As the SSCA Competition Manager & Recorder, I would like to congratulate the players that scored no less than 79 centuries, the 9 players that took 7 or more wickets & the 7 x hat- tricks that were achieved in season 2016/17,

Failure to record Cricket Online Match Results still remains a very stressful problem, that has seen the need for the SSCA Management Committee to enforce the SSCA Bylaws, Schedule 1, Fines #4 more stringently. Warnings in previous seasons have not worked. Teams must be reminded that there are no teams in the SSCA competitions in this day & age that would not have had ready access to a computer to complete their Online Match Results well before the scheduled cut off time of 7pm on the Monday night after every game.

Congratulations must go to all of those teams that managed to achieve Premierships (7 x Minor Premiers, 1 x 2nd place & 2 x 3rdplace). It was extremely unfortunate that extreme weather, both the unbearable heat that saw games suspended on week 1 of round 14 & forcing the implementation of 30 over per side games, then, most disappointingly, the “big wet” that saw 5 of the Finals’ games washed out & a draw result having to be declared. Considering the amount of rain that fell during those games that managed to get started, very high credit must go to those teams that put in the hard work to get a game underway & they must be congratulated for their efforts. Those that failed to assist know who they are!!!

Suspensions & Fines for breaches of the SSCA Bylaws are a serious ongoing problem, but will undoubtedly continue & the Clubs must take much more responsibility to address these problems. It must be remembered that the game of cricket & its’ Laws & Bylaws are set out by the SSCA administrators using the “MCC PREAMBLE- THE SPIRIT OF CRICKET” as a guide, & these rules must be adhered to.

Players must also be reminded that the Sutherland Shire Cricket Association Inc. is an entirely different association to the Sutherland Shire Junior Cricket Association Inc. & both associations have different Bylaws that need to be adhered to. Those that wish to play in both associations at the same time should be reminded of the different conditions of play that will take place.

I would like to thank the SSCA Management Committee, Tom Croucher (SSCA Online Administrator), The SSCUA (Umpires) Committee & their members, the various Club Committees, Team Captains/Scorers/Players, the Sutherland Shire Council, plus all of those other people that have assisted me to have made this 2016/17 cricket season a success. With good luck & good weather, we hope that season 2017/18 can be more successful.

Allan Lofthouse, SSCA Competition Manager & Recorder.

Round 1 v Blacktown at Tonkin

Blacktown won the toss & racked up 5-337, we dropped 10 catches, 2 players got big l00's, Matt Lowe pick of the bowlers with 3-20 of 3 overs, James Kolovos & Adam Burg got us off to a good start with a 119 run opening stand, James finished with 132 & Adam 54, the only other batsman that got a score was Matt Berry with 34 & we were bowled out for 313 - not a bad effort but a loss none the less.

Round 2 v Manly at Manly

We won the toss & scored 252 in a great batting display with James Kolovos again leading the way with 112 & he was supported by Josh Kedwell with 52 & Andrew Denoon with 27, we than came out & put in a flawless bowling & fielding display to rout Manly for 119, Matt Lowe 5-13 of 6.5 overs & to back up his century James Kolovos 3-16 of 9 overs, a good win

Round 3 v Hornsby at Kenthurst

Hornsby won the toss & again our bowling & fielding was up to the task & we bowled Hornsby out for 78 with Andrew Denoon 5-34 doing the damage, we then knocked of the runs with 6-79 with Tim Berry leading the way with 37 not out. Good to win this one as Hornsby had beaten us in the final the previous season & with this win we finished top & secured the home final.

Final v Blacktown at Caringbah

Sean did his job & won the toss & our batting did the job finishing with 253 with once again James Kolovos leading the way with 73 & he was well supported by Josh Kedwell with 55, Bryce Gasnier 33, Tim Berry 26 & Sean Newton 22. Blacktown were never in the hunt after we dismissed their 2 gun bats & they were dismissed for 134 with Matt Lowe 4-46 off 8.4 overs & Jack Taplin 3-2 of 4 overs being the destroyers. A well-deserved victory for the boys after the heartbreak of the year before. My thanks to Jason Reidy for scoring & special thanks also to Mitch Reidy who due to injury was not able to play any games but came along to support the boys & the boys appreciated it. My thanks also to Tom lceton for making Glenn McGrath oval available for the Final or it would have been a trek to Blacktown.
