First published in German inan English translation appeared in In Kurt Wolffpublisher and owner of Pantheon Booksexpressed a desire to publish a biography of Jung's life. Jung wrote the first three chapters about his childhood and early adulthood. By Dreams and Reflections time he had already told me a good many of his earliest memories, but there were still great gaps in the story. This decision was Dreams and Reflections gratifying as it was unexpected, for I knew how great a strain writing Memories for Jung. A book of mine is always a matter of fate. There is something unpredictable about the process of writing, and I cannot prescribe for myself any predetermined course. Thus Memories "autobiography" is now Memories a direction quite different from what I had imagined at the beginning. It has become a necessity for me to write down my early memories. Dreams and Reflections I neglect to do so for a single day, unpleasant physical symptoms immediately follow. As soon as I set to work they vanish and my head feels perfectly clear. Jung also contributed part of the chapter titled "Travels" the part about his travels to Kenya and Ugandaand the chapter titled "Late Thoughts. The content and layout of the book was much disputed. Jung's family, in the interest Memories keeping Jung's private life from the public eye, pushed for deletions and other changes. The publisher demanded that the Memories be greatly shortened to keep the price of printing down. Eventually, the disputed text including a chapter entitled "Encounters" detailing some of Jung's friendships and acquaintanceships was integrated into other chapters. The book was finally published in English by Pantheon Books, a division of Random Houseintwo years after Jung's death. It has remained in print ever since. In the spring ofat the age of 84, legendary psychiatrist Carl Jung set out to tell his life's story. He embarked upon a series of conversations with his colleague and friend, Aniela Jaffe, which he used as the basis for the text. At times, so powerful was his drive for expression that he wrote entire chapters by hand. He continued to work on the manuscript until shortly before his death in The genesis of this book to some extent determined its contents. Conversation or spontaneous narration is inevitably casual, and the Memories has carried over the entire 'autobiography. In recompense, they transmit the atmosphere of his intellectual world and the experience of a man to whom the psyche was a profound reality. Jung's reflections span everything from the minutia of working for a living to the grand truths of the human condition to the nature of the divine. This particular passage, from the closing of a chapter entitled "Life and Death," struck me as a powerful lens on consciousness and what it means to be human :.
