Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies Vol. 7, No. 1, 2011 Interacting Narratives: Acknowledging the Self in the Construction of Professional Knowledge Darrell Dobson, Ph.D. In this article, I present a theoretical extension of Interacting Narratives, a narrative approach to teacher education, development, and research in which identity is understood to be constructed and reconstructed through social influences and through conscious intention. The idea of Interacting Narratives provides a description of the interaction of Life Narratives (contextual influences) and Chosen Narratives (selected practices) in the construction and reconstruction of the participants’ entwined personal and professional identities. Here, I now describe a third fundamental influence: Self Narratives. The concept of Self Narratives acknowledges and values the crucial function of the extra- rational unconscious mind in the development of teachers’ professional knowledge and identity, an approach that challenges current theory and practice in the field. The concept of Self Narratives integrates the theories and practices of depth psychology, particularly Jungian analytical psychology, into narrative approaches to teachers’ professional knowledge. Doing so allows teachers and teacher educators to acknowledge and work with the inevitable and powerful unconscious dynamics that influence teaching. Recognizing the unconscious mind as profoundly influential is a position ignored by more familiar schools of educational psychology, and a Jungian perspective considers the unconscious mind as ultimately helpful and holistic, a position that varies from other schools of depth psychology. Teacher Education The principal emphasis in teacher education and development remains the attainment of skills and knowledge. Though such practices are essential, they are overstressed and emphasize the skills-related aspects of teachers’ professional knowledge. -

ARAS Connections Issue 4, 2020 ARAS, The Archive for Research in Archetypal Symbolism has a long history, reaching back to the early 1930s in Switzerland. Many known and unknown contributors have been part of making ARAS what it is today, a national organization with centers in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, as well as ARAS Online, serving visitors from many other countries. But it all began with three remarkable women who dedicated their lives to exploring the transformations of the psyche – and creating an actual place to do this, each in her own way. Bollingen Series, – Bollingen Series, named for the small village in Switzerland where Carl Gustav Jung had a private retreat, was originated by the phi- lanthropist Paul Mellon and his first wife, Mary Conover Mellon, in . Both Mellons were analysands of Jung in Switzerland in the s and had been welcomed into his personal circle, which included the eclectic group of scholars who had recently inaugu- rated the prestigious conferences known as the Eranos Lectures, held annually in Ascona, Switzerland. In the couple established Bollingen Foundation as a source of fellowships and subventions related to humanistic scholarship and institutions, but its grounding mission came to be the Bollin- gen book series. The original inspiration for the series had been Mary Mellon’s wish to publish a comprehensive English-language translation of the works of Jung. In Paul Mellon’s words,“The idea of the Collected Works of Jung might be considered the central core, the binding factor, not only of the Foundation’s general direction but also of the intellectual temper of Bollingen Series as a whole.” In his famous Bollingen Tower, Jung pursued studies in the reli- gions and cultures of the world (both ancient and modern), sym- bolism, mysticism, the occult (especially alchemy), and, of course, psychology. The breadth of Jung’s interests allowed the Bollingen editors to attract scholars, artists, and poets from among the brightest lights in midcentury Europe and America, whether or not their work was “Jungian” in orientation. In the end, the series was remarkably eclectic and wide-ranging, with fewer than half of its titles written by Jung or his followers. -

Ou peuvent-ils provenir de sources internes de savoirs, s’apparenter en quelque sorte à des savoirs innés? C’est cette seconde question que nous explorons dans cette communication, à l’aide de la psychologie jungienne et du concept d’archétypes qui en constitue un élément central. Après analyse, nous constatons que de nombreux concepts, principes, modèles théoriques et lois peuvent être étroitement rapprochés d’archétypes universellement reconnus, des savoirs aussi fondamentaux que la loi physique de la conservation de l’énergie par exemple, ou la structure narrative la plus commune, voire le processus de l’enseignement. -

Jung on Astrology Jung on Astrology brings together C. G. Jung’s thoughts on astrology in a single volume for the fi rst time, signifi cantly adding to our understanding of his work. Jung’s Collected Works , seminars, and letters contain numerous discussions of this ancient divinatory system, and Jung himself used astrological horoscopes as a diagnostic tool in his analytic practice. Understood in terms of his own psychology as a symbolic representation of the archetypes of the collective unconscious, Jung found in astrology a wealth of spiritual and psychological meaning and suggested it represents the “sum of all the psychological knowledge of antiquity.” The selections and editorial introductions by Safron Rossi and Keiron Le Grice address topics that were of critical importance to Jung – such as the archetypal symbolism in astrology, the precession of the equinoxes and astrological ages, astrology as a form of synchronicity and acausal correspondence, the qualitative nature of time, and the experience of astrological fate – allowing readers to assess astrology’s place within the larger corpus of Jung’s work and its value as a source of symbolic meaning for our time. The book will be of great interest to analytical psychologists, Jungian psy- chotherapists, and academics and students of depth psychology and Jungian and post-Jungian studies, as well as to astrologers and therapists of other orientations, especially transpersonal. Safron Rossi, PhD, is a Professor of mythology and depth psychology in the Jungian and Archetypal Studies specialization at Pacifi ca Graduate Institute, Cali- fornia. Sep. 2021 Matriarchy/patriarchy References to societies in which women assume political power and fight in wars, or in which property or the family name are passed down the maternal line, are encountered in Greek sources; however, it is in modern (that is, post- Enlightenment) readings of these sources that ‘matriarchy’ is considered to constitute a distinct period in the development of all societies, and consequently becomes associated with a range of utopian theories. Similarly, it is only in the nineteenth century that the ancient world’s pantheon of goddesses become associated with supposed archaic cults of a chthonic Great Mother. These are modern concerns, reflecting modern anxieties and desires. -

Jahrhundert zahlreiche Metamorphosen durchlaufen. Der Beitrag stellt einige entscheidende Etappen und Facetten der Debatte dar und informiert über aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse. Auch wenn sich weder eine matriarchale Phase der Menschheitsgeschichte noch ein matriarchales Gesellschaftssystem belegen lassen, wie dies in den Anfängen der Matriarchatsforschung angenommen wurde, so ist die damit einhergehende Frage nach der Partizipation von Frauen an Macht und am gesellschaftlichen Reichtum nicht verschwunden. Nur wird sie inzwischen für alle Phasen der Geschichte gestellt. Julien d'Huy ([email protected]) IMAf UMR 8171 (CNRS/IRD/EHESS/Univ.Paris1/EPHE/Aix-Marseille Univ-AMU) Abstract : Mythological data and statistical methods have been used to reconstruct the phylogeny of matriarchal tales and its relationship to genetic trees. The results show a correlation between the two trees and allow to identify the proto-forms of this mythology. This makes it possible to reject some assumptions about rock art. Keywords : cultural evolution, phylogenetics, mythology, ancestral states, rock art, matriarchy, myths of the origin of fire. 1. Introduction The hypothesis of the matriarchy as a social model, based on the maternal rights and hegemony of women, finds its origin in the work of Johann Jakob Bachofen, Das Mutterrecht (1861). His work is chiefly based on the Greek myths, and the historical data left by earlier authors such Herodote, and follows the earlier Mœurs des sauvages Américains comparées aux mœurs des premiers hommes of Joseph François Lafitau (1724) which compares the supposed gynecocracy of the Hurons and Iroquois with that of the ancient Greeks and Egyptians. Johann Jakob Bachofen defends the existence of a matriarchal society in Ancient Greece: he evokes a primitive domination of the feminine principle in the religion and insists on the importance of the matrilineal filiation, in which the heredity of power is only transmitted from mother to girl. -

Taking into account that the novel had been influenced by the historical context of the late Victorian period, the purpose has been to comprehend how Haggard reconstructs these two historical events previously mentioned in order to reaffirm the supremacy of patriarchy, to remain male hegemony and to perpetuate sexist attitudes through the novel. The analysis of this paper will be divided into two parts; each part will have two sections. The first part will develop the matriarchal theory of the late 19th century; the next section, will cover the matriarchal society of the novel. -

Mots-clés : savoirs fondamentaux, archétypes, intransmissibilité, inconscient, didactique Transmettre un savoir savant ou d’expérience à quelqu’un, c’est générer chez ce dernier le savoir en question de telle sorte qu’on puisse bel et bien reconnaître cette personne en possession dudit savoir. Que celui ou celle à l’origine de cette transmission possède lui-même ce savoir n’a à bien y penser aucune importance. Certes, il arrive le plus souvent que ce soit le cas, et on attend généralement d’un enseignant, par exemple, qu’il détienne lui-même le savoir à transmettre, en l’occurrence celui véhiculé dans les programmes scolaires, mais ce n’est pas obligatoire comme l’illustre Jacques Rancière (1987) dans Le maître ignorant .
