Journal of Jungian Scholarly Studies Vol. 7, No. 1, 2011 Interacting Narratives: Acknowledging the Self in the Construction of Professional Knowledge Darrell Dobson, Ph.D. In this article, I present a theoretical extension of Interacting Narratives, a narrative approach to teacher education, development, and research in which identity is understood to be constructed and reconstructed through social influences and through conscious intention. The idea of Interacting Narratives provides a description of the interaction of Life Narratives (contextual influences) and Chosen Narratives (selected practices) in the construction and reconstruction of the participants’ entwined personal and professional identities. Here, I now describe a third fundamental influence: Self Narratives. The concept of Self Narratives acknowledges and values the crucial function of the extra- rational unconscious mind in the development of teachers’ professional knowledge and identity, an approach that challenges current theory and practice in the field. The concept of Self Narratives integrates the theories and practices of depth psychology, particularly Jungian analytical psychology, into narrative approaches to teachers’ professional knowledge. Doing so allows teachers and teacher educators to acknowledge and work with the inevitable and powerful unconscious dynamics that influence teaching. Recognizing the unconscious mind as profoundly influential is a position ignored by more familiar schools of educational psychology, and a Jungian perspective considers the unconscious mind as ultimately helpful and holistic, a position that varies from other schools of depth psychology. Teacher Education The principal emphasis in teacher education and development remains the attainment of skills and knowledge. Though such practices are essential, they are overstressed and emphasize the skills-related aspects of teachers’ professional knowledge. -

Das Jahr 1979 mar- kiert einen Umschwung in der Wahrnehmung des Orients durch den Westen. Zafer Şenocak, ein Grenzgänger zwischen den Kulturen, schreibt dazu: Bis 1979 – dem Jahr der islamischen Revolution im Iran – spielte der Islam auf der Weltbühne keine politisch herausragende Rolle. Er war bestenfalls tiefenpsycholo- gisch wirksam, als hemmender Faktor bei Modernisierungsbestrebungen in den muslimischen Ländern, im Zuge der Säkularisierung der Gesellschaft, beiseite ge- schoben von der westlich orientierten Elite dieser Länder. In Europa wurden die Gesichter des Islam zu Ornamenten einer sich nach Abwechslung und Fremde seh- nenden Zivilisation. Das Fremde im Islam war Identitätsspender, Kulminations- punkt von Distanzierung und Anziehung zugleich.1 Im Iran kündigten sich 1975 die ersten Unruhen an, als Schah Pahlavi das beste- hende Zweiparteiensystem auflöste und nur noch seine sogenannte Erneuerungs- partei zuließ.2 Oppositionsgruppen gab es aber nach wie vor, und die andauernde 01Zafer Şenocak, War Hitler Araber? Frew La Trobe University Judith Mair Department of Management Monash University ABSTRACT Hogmanay, which is the name given to New Year’s Eve in Scotland, is a long-standing festival with roots going far back into pagan times. However, such festivals are losing their traditions and are becoming almost generic public celebrations devoid of the original rites and rituals that originally made them unique. Using the framework of Falassi’s (1987) festival rites and rituals, this chapter utilises a duoethnographic approach to examine Hogmanay traditions in contemporary Scotland and the extent to which these have been transferred to another country. The chapter reflects on the traditions which have survived and those that have been consigned to history. Hogmanay and Paganism: Scotland’s New Year’s Eve Celebrations INTRODUCTION New Year’s Eve (or Hogmanay as it is known in Scotland) is celebrated in many countries around the world, and often takes the form of a public celebration with fireworks, music and a carnival atmosphere. However, Hogmanay itself is a long-standing festival in Scotland with roots going far back into pagan times. Some of the rites and rituals associated with Hogmanay are centuries old, and the tradition of celebrating New Year Eve (as Hogmanay) on a grander scale than Christmas has been a part of Scottish life for many hundreds of years. -

Forbidden Fruit Civil Savagery in Christian Kracht’s Imperium “Ich war ein guter Gefangener. Ich habe nie Menschenfleisch gegessen.” I was a good prisoner. I never ate human flesh. These final words of Christian Kracht’s second novel, 1979, represent the last shred of dignity retained by the German protagonist, who is starving to death in a Chinese prison camp in the title year. Over and over, Kracht shows us a snapshot of what happens to the over-civilized individual when civilization breaks down. Faserland’s nameless narrator stands at the water’s edge, preparing to drown rather than live with his guilt and frustration; even the portrait of Kracht on the cover of his edited volume Mesopotamia depicts Kracht himself in a darkened wilderness, wearing a polo shirt and carrying an AK-47. In each of these moments, raw nature inspires the human capacity for violence and self-destruction as a sort of ironic antidote to the decadence and vacuity of a society in decline. Kracht’s latest novel, Imperium, further explicates this moment of annihilation. The story follows the fin-de-siècle adventures of real-life eccentric August Engelhardt, a Nuremberger who wears his hair long, promotes nudism, and sets off for the German colony of New Guinea in hopes of founding a cult of sun-worshippers and cocovores (i.e., people who subsist primarily on coconuts). Engelhardt establishes a coconut plantation near the small town of Herbertshöhe, where he attempts to practice his beliefs in the company of a series of companions of varying worth and, finally, in complete solitude. -

Unspoiled countryside, a romantic cottage and endless space in the little village of Unterleuten promise to be an idyll. The peaceful life goes out of joint when an investment company decides to erect a wind park close by. Meiler, a city real estate speculator spoilt by and used to success, and Gombrowski, a farmer owning a large estate, are both willing to provide the necessary land for the project so as to cash in on the subsidies to the tune of a few million euros. The only rub is that the land of the two gentlemen is just a few square meters too small. The missing plot is on Linda's property of all places, which she sees as her big opportunity of making her dream of setting up her own stud farm come true. While she is skilfully manipulating the two men and playing them one against the other, Gombrowski's archenemy Kron, a crutch-wielding one-time Communist and hard-boiled troublemaker, does all he can to prevent the wind park being built. It is not long before jealousy and greed, craftiness and intrigues lead to all hell breaking loose in Unterleuten. With a keen feel for all that is human and a subtle sense of humour, the author gradually exposes the true nature of her protagonists, thus making even the apparently noblest of motives seem dubious. -

Ou peuvent-ils provenir de sources internes de savoirs, s’apparenter en quelque sorte à des savoirs innés? C’est cette seconde question que nous explorons dans cette communication, à l’aide de la psychologie jungienne et du concept d’archétypes qui en constitue un élément central. Après analyse, nous constatons que de nombreux concepts, principes, modèles théoriques et lois peuvent être étroitement rapprochés d’archétypes universellement reconnus, des savoirs aussi fondamentaux que la loi physique de la conservation de l’énergie par exemple, ou la structure narrative la plus commune, voire le processus de l’enseignement.
