Parsifal and Canada: A Documentary Study The Canadian Opera Company is preparing to stage Parsifal in Toronto for the first time in 115 years; seven performances are planned for the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts from September 25 to October 18, 2020. Restrictions on public gatherings imposed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic have placed the production in jeopardy. Wagnerians have so far suffered the cancellation of the COC’s Flying Dutchman, Chicago Lyric Opera’s Ring cycle and the entire Bayreuth Festival for 2020. It will be a hard blow if the COC Parsifal follows in the footsteps of a projected performance of Parsifal in Montreal over 100 years ago. Quinlan Opera Company from England, which mounted a series of 20 operas in Montreal in the spring of 1914 (including a complete Ring cycle), announced plans to return in the fall of 1914 for another feast of opera, including Parsifal. But World War One intervened, the Parsifal production was cancelled, and the Quinlan company went out of business. Let us hope that history does not repeat itself.1 While we await news of whether the COC production will be mounted, it is an opportune time to reflect on Parsifal and its various resonances in Canadian music history. This article will consider three aspects of Parsifal and Canada: 1) a performance history, including both excerpts and complete presentations; 2) remarks on some Canadian singers who have sung Parsifal roles; and 3) Canadian scholarship on Parsifal. 559302 bk Adams US 7/14/06 12:41 PM Page 5 Charles Owen Royal Philharmonic Orchestra AMERICAN CLASSICS Charles Owen began his musical studies at the Yehudi Menuhin The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham, who set about creating a world- School with Seta Tanyel and continued at the Royal College of class ensemble from the finest musicians in Britain. Since his death in 1961 the orchestra has continued under a Music under the guidance of Irina Zaritskaya. There he won all the number of very distinguished conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir major piano prizes before completing his studies with Imogen Ashkenazy, followed in 1996 by their present Music Director, Daniele Gatti. Based in London, with a resident series Cooper. He received the Silver Medal at the Scottish International at both the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall, the orchestra also has a comprehensive United Kingdom and JOHN ADAMS Piano Competition (1995) and was a finalist in the 1996 London overseas touring programme. Recent highlights have included playing for the late Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, Philharmonic/Pioneer Young Soloist of the year competition. In for the President of China in Tiananmen Square and at the tenth anniversary celebration of Kazakhstan’s 1997 he won the prestigious Parkhouse award in partnership with independence, in addition to touring regularly throughout Europe and the United States. The orchestra has made the violinist Katharine Gowers. His concert activities are diverse many recordings and has a commitment to community and education projects, as well as to contemporary composers. -

„His tone is confident and passionate, he is an eloquent narrator without words, sovereignly covering the melancholic-dreamy width of the score.“ Frederik Hanssen, Der Tagesspiegel AMIHAI GROSZ VIOLA Biography Amihai Grosz looks back on a very unusual career path: At first a quartet player (founding member of the Jerusalem Quartet), then and until today Principal Violist with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and also a renowned soloist. Initially, Amihai Grosz learned to play the violin, before switching to the viola at age 11. In Jerusalem, he was taught by David Chen, later by Tabea Zimmermann in Frankfurt and Berlin as well as in Tel Aviv by Haim Taub, who had a formative influence on him. At a very early age, he received various grants and prizes and was a member of the “Young Musicians Group” of the Jerusalem Music Center, a program for outstanding young musical talents. Amihai Grosz works on solo and chamber music projects with artists such as Yefim Bronfman, Mitsuko Uchida, Daniel Barenboim, Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Gustavo Gimeno, Tugan Sokhiev and David Geringas. He performs in international concert halls like the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Wigmore Hall in London or the Philharmonie Luxembourg and at festivals all over the world, including the Jerusalem Chamber Music Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the festivals of Evian, Verbier and Delft, the BBC Proms, the Utrecht International Chamber Music Festival and the West Cork Chamber Music Festival.
