Every year, the Swan Trust is grateful to the volunteers who come together over the winter to help maintain the Swan. This work consists of both the usual annual maintenance and one-off tasks. Over the past couple of years, these have included recaulking the coach roof and dismantling and overhauling the capstan. For several years, Swan trustees had been aware of long splits in the bowsprit gradually getting deeper and more obvious over the full length of the bowsprit – all 28ft of it. This spar is a hefty 11in square at its inner end, tapering to 5in in the round at the forward end, and ‡ The splits in the bowsprit can be seen as it is being taken ashore at ‡ Brian Wishart and Alec Moncrieff working on the final stages of is of Oregon pine, as were all the the end of 2019 for transport to the store. applying epoxy resin to the inserts in the bowsprit. The Hydroslave hauler is driven off the starboard engine via a clutched hydraulic pump operated by a control lever positioned alongside the engine throttles mounted on the starboard gunwale. hat the dredges were shot within 20 minutes of closing Tthe house door quietly to avoid disturbing the owners and walking down to Hamnavoe pier, where Sondra was lying with the engine ticking over and the deck lights on, encapsulates the highly localised pattern of scallop dredging in Shetland. Severe southeasterly gales meant that Sondra had remained securely alongside Hamnavoe pier for the previous three days. Although the 60-knot winds had quickly fallen away to virtually nothing in the early hours of the previous morning, a big swell had still been running as darkness fell the previous afternoon. In view of the exposed location, weather is the biggest factor restricting the Shetland inshore scallop fishery, when – particularly after severe southwesterly winds blowing in across the North Atlantic – the associated heavy swell often lives on in the sea for days after the wind has moderated. Skipper Billy Jamieson and crewman Konrad Flaws’ preference to wait until first light to accurately evaluate sea conditions was why Sondra was still in harbour at 7am, one hour after the dredges could have started fishing under the terms of the Shetland Regulating Order.
