    1 Interview with Peter Hooper: Life member and long serving Past President of Fitzroy Baseball CLUB (interview February 2018): What were your sporting interests when you were growing up Peter ? I started playing cricket at Fitzroy Cricket Club as a 15 year old and played till I was 29 years old then retired from playing to take up District cricket umpiring. Within 3 years I was umpiring District 1sts cricket which I did over the next 14 seasons. During my time at the cricket club in 1948 I can recall meeting brothers Ross and Lyn Straw, Graeme Deany, Bernie Considine, Jack Potter, Eddie Illingworth and all the Harvey brothers who were great baseballers as well as cricketers. How did your family get started at Fitzroy Baseball Club ? When I left the cricket club my 2 young sons Ian and Greg started playing local football with Glenroy Football Club. Jimmy Beitzel, who was a good friend invited both my boys to give baseball a try at Fitzroy Baseball Club. So with the support of my late wife Joan (who is also a Life Member of the club ) Ian and Greg started playing at the same time in different age groups. Joan would help with the team that Graham Moss coached, she picked up half the team for away games and Graham the rest in their cars. Graham was the person who introduced the Collingwood flats boys John King, Steven Brooke, Billy Linton, Paul Farris, Wayne Pollock and Norm McHenry to baseball at Fitzroy. What year did you start as an office bearer in the club ? A year later after my two boys started playing in the juniors at Fitzroy I came down to the club to watch my sons play as a parent.

F A DAO SHAKYA , OHY The following story is the translation from the Chinese of a biography of VM Jy Din -- the Master responsible for the establishment of our Zen Buddhist Order of Hsu Yun. The article is straight journalism, perhaps a bit "dry" in comparison to some of the other Zen essays we are accustomed to encountering. The story of the story, however, is one of convergence, patience and luck -- if we consider “luck” to be the melding of opportunity and action. I have long wished to know more information about the founding master of our order and history of the Hsu Yun Temple in Honolulu. Like many of us, I have scoured books and websites galore for the merest mentions or tidbits of facts. Not being even a whit knowledgeable of Chinese language, any documentation in Master Jy Din's native language was beyond my grasp. I read what I could find -- and waited. I knew that some day I would stumble across that which I sought, if only I did not drive myself to distraction desiring it. Late in July of 2005, that which I had sought was unexpectedly delivered to me. By chance and good fortune, I received an e-mail from Barry Tse, in Singapore -- the continuance of a discussion we had originated on an internet "chat board." As the e-mail discussion continued, Barry mentioned an article he had found on a Chinese Buddhist website -- a biography of our direct Master Jy Din. He pointed out the website to me and I printed a copy of the article for my files.

    Tempe Oral History Project Narrator: FRANK KUSH Interviewer: MARK PRY Date of Interview: July 11, 1995 Interview Number: OH - 153 Frank Kush was born in Pennsylvania. He was an All-American football player at Michigan State. In 1955, he came to Arizona State College to be an assistant football coach under head coach Dan Devine. In 1958 he became the head football coach. He quickly developed a winning football team, and built Arizona State's reputation as a major national contender in collegiate football. He was involved in the creation of the Western Athletic Conference in 1962, and was primarily responsible for bringing ASU into the PAC-10 Conference in 1978. He was fired in 1979 due to controversies over student athletes' receiving unearned class credits, and an incident in which he allegedly hit the helmet of an ASU team member. In this interview he talks about the ASU-UA rivalry, the Sun Angels Foundation, gaining national recognition for the ASU football team and individual athletes, ASU's entry into PAC-10 Conference, his personal coaching philosophy and reputation as a disciplinarian, events surrounding his dismissal as head coach in 1979, and his career since leaving ASU. I believe that this is because the Buddha’s basic approach was to prescribe a different treatment for every spiritual ailment, much as a doctor prescribes a different medicine for every medical ailment. Thus his teachings were always appropriate for the particular suffering individual and for the time at which the teaching was given, and over the ages not one of his prescriptions has failed to relieve the suffering to which it was addressed. Ever since the Buddha’s Great Demise over twenty-five hundred years ago, his message of wisdom and compassion has spread throughout the world. Yet no one has ever attempted to translate the entire Buddhist canon into English throughout the history of Japan.
