Bibliography 2008 THE MARINER ’S MIRROR THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY FOR NAUTICAL RESEARCH BIBLIOGRAPHY FOR 2008 Compiled by M.S. Partridge PhD, FRHistSoc K. Partridge, BA LONDON 2010 2010 The Society for Nautical Research 2 INTRODUCTION This, the twenty-sixth annual maritime bibliography, includes books and articles published in 2008, as well as some works published in earlier years. The subjects included are as follows: naval history, mercantile history, nautical archaeology (but not the more technical works), biography, voyages and travel, and art and weapons and artefacts. A list of acquisitions of manuscripts precedes the published works cited, and we are, as always, grateful to The National Archives: Historical Manuscripts Commission (TNA: HMC) for providing this. With regard to books, International Standard Book Numbers (ISBNs) have been included, when available. The bibliography for 2008 was prepared and edited by: Karen Partridge Michael Partridge, PhD, FRHistSoc The compilers would like to thank everyone who contributed to the present bibliography, and always welcome the assistance of readers. We should also like to acknowledge our use of the material listed in the Tijdschrift voor Zeegeschiedenis. 3 ARCHIVES The National Archives in its annual Accessions to Repositories exercise collects information from over 200 record repositories throughout the British Isles about manuscript accessions received in the previous calendar year. The information is then edited and used to produce a number of thematic digests which are distributed for publication in a number of learned journals and news - letters, as well as being made available in full on TNA ’s website (www.nationalarchives.gov.uk). This information has already been added to the indexes of the National Register of Archives (NRA), the central point for collecting and disseminating information about the location of manuscript sources relating to British history outside the public records. The NRA, which currently contains over 44,000 lists and catalogues of archives, can be consulted at the National Archives, Kew, Richmond, TW8 4DU. Alternatively, searchers may access the indexes to the NRA and certain linked on-line catalogues via the website. Limited and specific enquiries can be dealt with by post, or email ([email protected] ). Readers should note that dates for records in this digest are given when known, but that these are covering dates which do not necessarily indicate the presence of records for all intervening years. Records have been included in the digest regardless of whether the deposit has yet been fully catalogued, and readers are advised to check with the relevant repository as to whether this, or any other factors, may affect access to the documents. Conservative and far-right parties in Europe have seized upon issues of migration and cultural diversity, often engaging in fearmonger- ing about immigrant communities and playing upon some Europeans’ anxiety about rapid demographic change. Relations between the European Union—as well as many of its constituent member states—and Turkey have deteriorated dramatically in recent years. And since 2014, Turks abroad, in Europe and elsewhere around the world, have been able to vote in Turkish elections, leading to active campaigning by some Turkish leaders in European countries. For these and several other reasons, political and aca- demic interest in the Turkish diaspora and its interactions

• Digital 3D Reconstruction of British 74-Gun Ship-Of-The-Line
DIGITAL 3D RECONSTRUCTION OF BRITISH 74-GUN SHIP-OF-THE-LINE, HMS COLOSSUS, FROM ITS ORIGINAL CONSTRUCTION PLANS A Thesis by MICHAEL KENNETH LEWIS Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE Chair of Committee, Filipe Castro Committee Members, Chris Dostal Ergun Akleman Head of Department, Darryl De Ruiter May 2021 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2021 Michael Lewis ABSTRACT Virtual reality has created a vast number of solutions for exhibitions and the transfer of knowledge. Space limitations on museum displays and the extensive costs associated with raising and conserving waterlogged archaeological material discourage the development of large projects around the story of a particular shipwreck. There is, however, a way that technology can help overcome the above-mentioned problems and allow museums to provide visitors with information about local, national, and international shipwrecks and their construction. 3D drafting can be used to create 3D models and, in combination with 3D printing, develop exciting learning environments using a shipwreck and its story. This thesis is an attempt at using an 18th century shipwreck and hint at its story and development as a ship type in a particular historical moment, from the conception and construction to its loss, excavation, recording and reconstruction. ii DEDICATION I dedicate my thesis to my family and friends. A special feeling of gratitude to my parents, Ted and Diane Lewis, and to my Aunt, Joan, for all the support that allowed me to follow this childhood dream. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my committee chair, Dr.

  • Introduction: Intertidal Zone and Tides
Introduction: Intertidal zone and tides People have been populating and using the coast and intertidal zone as a resource since prehistoric times. As a consequence, there are many different kinds of archaeological features to explore in the intertidal and coastal zone. Unlike terrestrial sites, the archaeology in the intertidal zone is not made up of layers; features from prehistory and the modern day can be found on the same horizon, adjacent to each other but separated by thousands of years in date. In addition, the anaerobic conditions created in the intertidal zone mean that finds and features which usually don’t survive, frequently do survive, such as Bronze Age sewn-plank boats and wooden trackways. This booklet of information and activity ideas has been created by Megan Clement from the Heritage Lottery Funded Coastal and Intertidal Zone Archaeological Network (www.citizan.org.uk ) to support the 2017 Young Archaeologists’ Club Leaders’ Weekend. It provides inspiration to help you explore the rich archaeology of the coastal and intertidal zone with groups of young people. Intertidal zone The intertidal zone is the part of the foreshore which gets covered by the sea at high tide and is uncovered at low tide. The area which makes up the intertidal zone can vary dramatically in size. The height of the tide varies too. The Severn Estuary for instance has the largest tidal range in the UK (and the second largest in the world) at 14m. The tidal range is the name given to the difference in the height of the water between low tide and high tide.
