ABOUT THE CONTRIBUTORS Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is the Minister of Defence of Malaysia and Member of Parliament of Malaysia for the Bagan Datoh constituency in Perak. He is also a member of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He received his early education in the Sungai Balai Darat Primary School in Bagan Datoh, Teluk Intan and the Izzuddin Shah Secondary School in Ipoh. Zahid Hamidi has held various appointments during his tenure in the government and private sector starting as Assistant Manager in the National Savings Bank in 1976 and rose through the ranks to become the bank’s Chairman in 1994. In 1987, he became the political secretary to the then Youth and Sports Minister, Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. In 2004, he was appointed to be the Deputy Tourism Minister and two years later became the Deputy Information Minister. In 2008, Zahid Hamidi was promoted to a full minister post in the Prime Minister’s Department before moving on the current post as the Minister of Defence. Zahid Hamidi is also the Chairman of the Malaysian Institute of Defence and Security (MiDAS). He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Studies from University of Malaya in 1975 and subsequently received his Masters of Science degree majoring in Corporate Communication in 2000 from University Putra Malaysia. Zahid Hamidi pursued the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication Science and was conferred the PhD degree in 2008 from University Putra Malaysia. He was chosen as the Bagan Datoh UMNO Youth Chief in 1984 and has held various posts till becoming the UMNO Vice President in 2008. In 1993, the then Governor of Melaka, the late Tun Syed Ahmad Syed Mahmud Shahabuddin conferred him the Datukship. A decade later, he was conferred the Dato’ Seri title by the Sultan Azlan Shah of Perak. Dato’ Seri Dr Zahid Hamidi is married to Datin Seri Hamidah Khamis and they are blessed with five children. Li Jianwei is the Director and Research Fellow at the Research Center for Marine Science, National Institute for the South China Sea Studies (NISCSS), Haikou, China. Her research interests are dispute resolution in the South China Sea region, Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities and their impact, and comparative study of the trade unions in China and the UK. Since joining the NISCSS in 2005, she has been involved in the research programmes on the peaceful resolution of the South China Sea Issues and on promoting economic cooperation in the South China Sea region. She has published many articles and her recent publications includes “China and US Views on Military Vessel Rights in the EEZ is More Than a Legal Matter?” (10 August 2011). Hj Kasah Hj Mohd Shah was commissioned in 1985 into the Royal Malay Regiment. He holds a Master degree in Defence Studies and a Master degree in Management and Diploma in Science Logistics Management. Currently he is the Deputy Director of Army Secretariat, Army Headquarters. Prior to this, he attended the Malaysian Defence College and has commanded 25th Royal Malay Regiment. Mohd Zaini Salleh graduated from the University of Malaya in 1989 with a degree in Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Southeast Asian Studies. He was commissioned into the Territorial Army Regiment, Malaysian Army at the early stage of his military career in 1989. Then he joined the mobilized unit of Regiment 304 (Territorial Army) as a Second Lieutenant in 1989. He has held various staff and command appointments in the military service. He also attended various military The Journal of Defence and Security i and functional courses internally and abroad including Managing Defence in the Wider Security Context from the Defence Academy and Cranfield University in 2008. He obtained Master of Arts in Analysis Policy and Security Studies from National University of Malaysia in 1997. He joined the National Defence University of Malaysia in 2009 as a Senior Lecturer. Currently he is the Head, Department of Strategic Studies in the Faculty of Defence and Management Studies, and pursuing his PhD degree in the field of international relations in the same university. Ahmad Zaidi Sulaiman began his academic career in July 2003. A Senior Lecturer in the Mathematics Department and the Director for the Center for Defence Foundation Studies, National Defence University of Malaysia. He obtained a Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) and Minor in Business Administration from Loyola University, New Orleans, USA. Later he furthered his studies in Diploma in Education (1993) and Master in Business Administration (2003) at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Formerly, an Education Officer in the General Service Corps of the Malaysian Armed Forces for 13 years and has served in various military training establishments and at the Education Directorate. In 2001 he served as an interpreter with the Jordan Battalion under United Nations Transition Administration in East Timor. He has co-authored five articles and published in international journals and is now actively conducting research with two research grants. Muhammad Anwar bin Abdullah was commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment on 8 June 1983 and has served in various key appointments in the country and overseas. Among the notable one are ADC to Force Commander of United Nation Operations In Somalia (UNOSOM II), Assistants Defence Attaché at the Malaysian Embassy, Washington DC USA, Military Assistant to the Chief Of Army , Deputy Commander of the 515 TA Regiment and Commanding Officer of the 6th Royal Ranger Regiment. He is a graduate of US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas USA. He holds a Diploma in Strategic Studies from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), Diploma in Management from the Malaysian Institute of Management (MIM) and a Master Degree in Social Science (Defence Studies) from UKM. Currently he is a Staff Officer Grade One Admin at the Human Resources Branch of the Malaysian Army Headquarters. Johnny Lim Eng Seng graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in December 1986 and was commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment. He is currently the Head of Combat Doctrine in the Army Training Command. Lt Col Johnny is also a graduate of the Australian Army Command and Staff College in Queenscliff in 2000 where he won the Strategic Prize as the overall best student in the strategic studies module. He holds a Masters Degree in Defence Studies from the University of Canberra and a Masters in Social Science from the National University of Malaysia (UKM). Lt Col Johnny recently graduated from the Malaysian Armed Forces Defence College in January 2011 where he won both the best academic and best overall student awards. The Journal of Defence and Security 2 Inderjit Singh was commissioned in to the Malaysian Royal Signal Regiment and is currently a Senior Lecturer in the National Defence University of Malaysia. He has held various appointments from a trainer to various tri-service staff appointments. He served as a UN Military Observer and later became the first Malaysian to be selected as the Military Advisor to the Force Commander in UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE) in 2004 besides being awarded the UN Commendation Certificate for his excellent performance. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Science (Sydney), Masters Degree in Information Technology (UM), Masters Degree in Management (UM), Diploma in Strategic and Defense Studies (UM) and Diploma Psychology (Counseling) from UKM. For three consecutive years since 2008 he has been a regular guest lecturer at the Royal Norwegian Command Defense & Staff College (Oslo, Norway) lecturing in organizational leadership to international military officers. Theresa Stanslas @ Pooja Stanslas is currently working as a corporate communications manager at a local private university. The manuscript published in the journal was written when she was working as a senior researcher at the Malaysian Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA). Her research interest includes maritime issues, political economy, and transparency and accountability. She holds a Masters degree from the Australian National University (ANU), Australia, and a BA (First Class) from University Malaya (UM), Malaysia. Zulkiffli Abd Kadir received his BEng and MSc in the Department of Automotive Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka. He is currently attached to the National Defence University of Malaysia. His research interests include tyre modeling, evaluation of vehicle dynamics and control. Khisbullah Hudha received his BEng of Mechanical Design from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) Indonesia. He did his MSc with the Department of Engineering Production Design, Technische Hoogeschool Utrecht, the Netherlands and his PhD on intelligent vehicle dynamics control using magnetorheological damper from Malaysia University of Technology (UTM). His research interests include modelling, identification and force tracking control of semi- active damper, evaluation of vehicle ride and handling, electronic chassis control system design and intelligent control. He is currently attached to the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). Shohaimi Abdullah is a serving military officer seconded to the National Defence University Malaysia (NDUM) since July 2009. He obtained his a Master of Science degree in Weapon and Vehicle System in 1996 and a PhD in hypervelocity impact of multiple projectiles in the year 2000 from the Royal Military College of Science, Cranfield University, the United Kingdom. His current research interest is in impact dynamic and kinetic energy projectile design. The Journal of Defence and Security iii Mohd Fazli Mohd Yusoff received his BEng from UIAM in Mechatronic Engineering. Then he obtained his MSc in Engineering from Australia National University (ANU). He is currently serving the National Defence University of Malaysia as a lecturer. His research interest is in intelligent control system and evaluation of dynamic system. Ir Khalid Abd Jalil received his BSc in Mechanical Engineering from Han Yang University, Seoul Korea and completed his Master in Airworthiness and Aircraft Safety from ENCISA/ENCA, Toulouse, France.
