Porsche 919 Hybrid Return to top-level sport Porsche is making its comeback to the top-level motorsport arena: with the new 919 Hybrid the sports car brand is sending a platform for pioneering technology to the top category of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with the undisputed seasonal highlight of the 24-hour Le Mans race. Porsche's reputation precedes it at this venue: with 16 overall victories under its belt, the brand holds the record for this, the most famous endurance race in the world. In 2014 Porsche is returning to the top-level class endurance race after a 16-year absence - namely Le Mans Prototypes (LMP1). Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG explains: "The new and revolutionary efficiency regulations for this class were what prompted us to take this step. In 2014 it is not going to be the fastest contender who is going to win the sports car world championship and Le Mans, but the car that gets furthest with the defined amount of energy. And it is precisely this challenge that the automotive industry has to face. The 919 Hybrid is like a high speed research laboratory and the most complex racing car Porsche has ever built." The new WEC regulations for the LMP1 racing car gives engineers an unusual amount of leeway and demands pioneering technology, such as hybridisation, downsizing engines and consistent lightweight construction. TRACK TIME WITH JIM NEW BOXSTER S PORSCHE RACING Zeitschrift Craig Valenti sent me photos of this new 2007 Porsche 997 Turbo. This is the newest model of the 911 heritage with more horsepower and torque than the previous model. The 480 bhp and 457 lbs of torque are created by new Vari- able Turbo Geometry and the VarioCam Plus engine. The Variable Turbo is the newest technology to be included which allows the air flow for the turbo to be optimized by changing the angle of the turbo blades. This ability will allow the turbo to spin up more quickly and also provide more boost. Another new feature for this car is the new Por- sche Active Suspension Management system (PASM). The PASM system will allow the 997 to have a soft ride feel when driving around town and on long trips, and when you reach the track you simply touch a button and the cars suspension transforms into a stiff race car. The new wider body now covers the wider tires and also incorporates an improved air intake system for the intercooler. Now having seen and read about this in the Excellence magazine I wondered what it would be like to drive. When Craig sent me the photos I promptly sent him an email reply asking when I could take a test drive. After all I wanted to do a respectable article. His reply was Spring 2007, when the first one arrives that has not been pre-sold.

Press Release August 29, 2014 No. M 135/14 FIA World Endurance Championship - LMP1 drivers take a summer break Taking the holiday at full throttle Stuttgart. Despite the FIA World Endurance Championship's long summer break between the races in Le Mans (15th June) and the next outing in Austin, Texas (20th September), Porsche's LMP1 works drivers are not getting bored. In addition to test- ing with the Porsche 919 Hybrid, they have made numerous appearances for the company and indulged their high-speed hobbies. Timo Bernhard's passion is driving Porsche cars – be it for the works team on the track or in a private capacity in rallying or recently hill climbing, too. Two weeks after the 24 Hours of Le Mans, he enjoyed taking part with his Porsche GT3 Cup as the course car in the Rallye Warndt in the German Saarland. With his team-mate Mark Webber he subsequently attended the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, where he naturally also dropped by for the Porsche Supercup. The most successful holiday and family excursion came on 13th July - on son Paul's first birthday, Timo took over- all victory in the 41st Homburg ADAC Hill Race in a Porsche 991 Cup (Typ 991) in Germany. The car is normally driven by Earl Bamber (NZ) in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland for Team 75 run by Timo's dad Rüdiger Bernhard. From 21st to 23rd July, Timo and LMP1 colleagues Brendon Hartley and Marc Lieb were busy testing at Paul Ricard, France, which was followed by a detour for Team 75 Berhard's partici- pation at the Red Bull Ring in Austria, before it was then off on holiday with wife Katharina and little Paul.
