Fresh Green

f you’ve ever been to a PCA Club Race, Iyou’ve seen a bunch of people in their “Fresh Green” (that’s the actual name of the color) shirts all over the track. These people, who come from all parts of the Country, are volunteers from PCA National Club Racing and include, most likely: the Race Steward(s), Timing & Scoring personnel, and the Scrutineers (Scruts) among others. The PCA National Club Racing team has two primary objectives for every Club Race: Green shirts. First and foremost is SAFETY and second to make sure that the Racing RULES and REGULATIONS are enforced.

RACE STEWARDS The Stewards run the race and are responsible for the Team. Depending on the number of cars racing, you may find one or more Stewards present. They start their work months before an event, communicating with the PCA personnel who will be working the race to make sure that travel and lodging arrangements are coordinated. They also work very closely with the event’s Regional Organizing Committee to assure that all loose ends are tied before the event starts and that everything runs smoothly once it does. During the event the Steward is the Boss. He or she is in constant communication with Checking pit road speed. every single department. They deal with any and all issues, apply sanctions if needed, and theirs is the final word, so you may appreciate how stressful their job is.

TIMING & SCORING This team is responsible for making sure that each and every racer is timed to the millisecond during practice sessions, qualifying sessions, and races. They time each lap for each participant and they also control the in-pit times during the mandatory pit timing loops that need to work with each and and random inspections and looking for any stops in the Enduros. every unique transponder installed in each safety and/or rules infractions We are also the Timing and Scoring posts these times and every racecar. After the last race of the event, we each pack up all our gear and try to catch our respective flights back home. Then we send our notes to the Lead Scrut who prepares a full report of the event from our perspective. This report gets shared between all National Scrutineers so that we can learn and try to make the system better for the next event. Sometimes the “fresh green” shirts are covered with foul weather gear, because, if we can borrow from the USPS: Neither snow nor rain nor heat or gloom of night stays these scruts from their swift completion of their job! 2020 - The Year That Wasn’t…

ow, are we through with it now? WCertainly not as I write this Rally Master article in mid-October. Hopefully by the winter holidays we can all relax and act normal again! So let’s talk about a “normal” rally. Well, that may be a twist of words above. The Gimmick Rally we are putting together for early next year is not anything like a normal rally this region has seen in the 20 years that Jeanne and I have been members here. We are designing the rally based on the Gimmick Where is Jeanne? one that was run at Parade 2 summers ago. I will actually provide the basic route instructions today. Entrants will be given a list of 5 locations to be visited. The driver & navigator will determine the “route” to be followed between each location. Maps, GPS, and smart phones are allowed. Each team will likely set a different priority for “how to get to” the different locations, based on knowledge of the area, mileage, traffic patterns, etc. You will be given the locations’ addresses, phone numbers, hours of operation, etc. When you arrive at a specified venue along your chosen route here are a few tasks to be completed: 1st: Verify that you were actually there. This verification may be accomplished with any of these types of proof: photos at the location with What’s at the Swap Shop? driver and/or navigator in them, picking up a site specific trinket or souvenir, nab a monogramed or advertising napkin, drink coaster, etc. Some sites will have a pre- planned item to give to each participant. Wrist bands will show that you are a part of the rally. 2nd: Answer questions on the rally sheet which will be specific to each location. This may or may not require you to enter the venue. Any venue that charges an entry fee will be promptly shown on the rally instructions sheet. We think that there will be no limit on the number of participants for this one, but finalizing the ending location will be the determining factor.... Who is out of water Who are the Blues Brothers entertaining? See you next year! n in Missouri?

NOV/DEC 2020 PORSCHE PROFILE 19 20 PORSCHE PROFILE SEP/OCT 2020 TAYCAN CROSS TURISMO The Porsche Utility Vehicle of the Future By Jeremy Swiger. Photos by Mark Riccioni. n the three years prior to February, my work has afforded me Iregular trips to Hasselt, Belgium, typically four-and-a-half hours one way up German Autobahns, finishing with a short westerly jaunt across a bit of the Netherlands before arriving in Belgium. On rare occasions, I would drive the 911 but more often took our station wagon, favoring the increased cargo space to bring back crates of Trappist Ales and other good Belgian beers. This year I’ve had much time to reflect on my travels to Belgium, what with the worldwide pandemic and subsequent restriction on company travel (requiring nothing short of Executive Vice President approval). Among these reflections is the observation that station wagons rule European fast lanes. It’s quite possible this is due to the sheer number of station wagons on European roads, many more than exotic sports cars you expect to see in the fast lane, and still more than the increasingly popular SUVs and crossovers which seem to PORSCHE PHOTO litter roads now. Quick tangent: according to my non-scientific observations, the most common station wagon to have blown my doors in on the autobahn is the A4. I can’t explain why Audi drivers are so fast; perhaps they are just Porsche drivers running around in their pedestrian cargo haulers. continued on p22

NOV/DEC 2020 PORSCHE PROFILE 21 By now you may be wondering why all the talk about station wagons, this is a Porsche magazine after all, right? I’ve spent most of my time in my home office this year fantasizing about cars and thinking about a new Porsche, something to complement a pure like the 911. It must combine utility, efficiency, and high technology in a package which is as comfortable and capable running short errands as it is at high speed cruising the autobahn. I may be crazy, but I think Porsche should build a / station wagon version of the Taycan. I think its overall shape lends itself well to a long roofline and increased cargo space in the same way the Panamera does to the Sport Turismo. Apparently, Porsche doesn’t think this is such a crazy idea. I reached out to the spokesman for the Taycan product line to ask what future variants of the car are coming down PHOTO PORSCHE PHOTO

the pipeline, if any. In an email response, a representative confirmed that indeed, the Taycan Cross Turismo is set to hit showrooms in North America during the second part of next year. He didn’t provide any other details or pictures, so I had to dig into the interwebs for more information. According to Car & Driver, the Taycan Cross Turismo is expected mirror the line-up of the , from trim levels to price, starting just under $100,000 and approaching $200,000 for a well-optioned Turbo S. Porsche remains tight-lipped on details of the new car. Much of Car & Driver’s information is speculative and based on the sedan. For example, they state that the Cross Turismo is expected to come either as a 2+2 or 5-seat version. Well, yeah, how many do you expect it to have (eyeroll)? Many of the pictures out there, including those shown by Car & Driver are of the Mission-E CUV which depicts the wagon version of the Taycan as more of a rugged, semi-offroad vehicle in the same vein as a Volvo XC70 (Cross-Country). The Mission-E CUV, while having the distinctive Taycan headlights, shows a vehicle with more ground clearance, aggressive tire tread, and extra plastic body cladding than the production Taycan sedan. More recent spy photos floating around the internet show a car that is much closer in spirit to the production sedan; without the plastic body cladding and increased ride height, favoring something more like what the Sport Turismo is to the Panamera. This is good in my opinion. I happen to like the way the Sport Turismo looks better than the Panamera sedan. Also, it’s silly to think that Porsche would bring to production

22 PORSCHE PROFILE NOV/DEC 2020 something more niche than this niche vehicle already is. To me, the advantage of the Cross Turismo is having the performance of a 911 with a cargo bay full of beer crates or whatever else will fit, all without having to pay hefty European fuel prices. My commute to the Hasselt office is about 300 miles. While Porsche doesn’t really give concrete information on range, Car & Driver believes the real-world range to be around 200 miles. This means one coffee break to recharge the driver and the car. I’m okay with that since I usually stop for a short break anyway. I know I may be in the minority, but I really like the promise of the Cross Turismo. Yes, it will most likely sell in limited numbers and yes, at least for now, it is probably a niche automobile. But it represents for Porsche a step into the future; a vehicle which advances the current trend toward electrics, the potential to broaden their customer base by reaching a different market, and ensuring the future of the sport car lines by introducing new customers to the brand. Smokey & Bandit theme Thanks again to Pem-Air for use of the venue for Mark Losota. and to Kevin Seus with Reeves Import Motor Cars and Porsche of Tampa, for sponsoring breakfast and for finally joining us in competition! Everyone, please continue to support these local dealers and sponsors. With a tease of fall temperatures and lower humidity earlier in the week, we thought we were going to have a beautiful day--then the tropics rolled back in to remind us we live in a subtropical climate! The forecast was calling for an 80 percent chance of rain; it was definitely 100 percent--but just an on/off annoying drizzle throughout the day. There were 38 drivers and several guest/worker participants who braved the rainy conditions and we all ultimately had a fun day. Thinking of those who may be concerned with being too close to others at this time, at an indoor facility, we limited our group to 40. We were so very pleased to have attained our first 30 attendees within 2 days of posting on Club Registration. We filled our 40 easily, and with a very few cancellations and some last-minute adders. It was a great Entrance evening, hopefully enjoyed by all.

30 PORSCHE PROFILE NOV/DEC 2020 Let’s Add Some Holiday Sizzle To The Gala—A Sneak Peek Article and Photo by Bill Caldwell

es, the December, 2020, Member YCelebration and Gala is happening. Suncoasters and guests will be able to register in early November. Our President set out the scheduling for this social happening in her message found in this Profile issue, along with initial details as to social distancing and masking requirements that we all must honor to collectively join together. One of our joint undertakings as Suncoast PCA members is to help others through our support of two local charities. We accomplish this mission in part by pausing at driving events and literally passing “the hat for contributions for one of our charities.” Many thanks are owed to the drivers and instructors who generously donated monies for charity at a driving event this past year. Another charity experience for Suncoast members occurs with the Silent Auction, normally conducted at the November Wine Dinner hosted by Mike Kwasin at his bay front home. Unfortunately, due to social distancing concerns in this time of pandemic, this enjoyable dinner and Silent Auction charity event had to be canceled. But—now wait for it, the Silent Auction to benefit Ready for Life (“RFL”) and its work for “system emancipated” foster kids will occur, not next November 2021 at a wine dinner, but in December, 2020, at the Gala. Let me gently entice your participation in this year’s Auction. This section is your first peek regarding the Gala’s Silent Auction. NOV/DEC 2020 PORSCHE PROFILE 31 Products for Porsches By Hans-Joachim Krenz My collection of y wife LaDonna and I retired to SW Griots Goodies. MFlorida almost nine years ago, after having lived for forty years in the Pacific Northwest, the home of Griot’s Garage. Our house was within thirty minutes of GG’s “flagship store” (the former Coca-Cola bottling plant) in Tacoma, Washington. We spent many drizzly Saturday afternoons there, after lunch in some quaint little place on the Ruston waterfront, of course, just browsing in the retail shop or looking at Richard Griot’s 12-car auto exhibit in the back of the retail store. Now, given the misty, drizzly, cloudy, and cool weather in this part of the country, our club, the PNW region of Porsche Club of America, ran primarily “tech days” in the winter months. These were very informative events at various automotive establishments ranging from race-team garages to restoration shops and, yes, even Griot’s Garage. Uncharacteristically, my wife allowed me to drag her to one of the Griot’s events with the promise of coffee and donuts served by Mr. Richard Griot himself. It was when our group of Porsche fans followed Mr. Griot into his Car Care School (no kidding, this is a multi-bay garage, actually the former Coca-Cola plant loading dock, that features everything you might need to concours prep a car, with adequate space for spectators) that LaDonna’s interest was piqued. In the bay sat a black, 1980s, vintage 911. It was a really nice 20-foot car, but up close the paint just didn’t look healthy at all. The Griot’s crew, all detailers for various by a quick rinse. And to properly utilize all these products I clearly needed the Griot’s Garage rolling car wash bucket! But the piece de resistance was a rolling cart for the garage to keep all these tools and products organized and at the ready. When we finally rolled out of the Griot’s parking lot that day, my Porsche was filled to capacity with over $900 worth of Griot’s car care tools and products. The next day, my heart filled with gratitude, I detailed LaDonna’s 8-year old Miata while trying out all my new Griot’s stuff. The car turned out simply stunning, and she was thrilled. Happy wife, happy life! We met up again with Richard Griot at Amelia Island Werks Reunion in March 2020. He didn’t remember serving coffee and a donut to LaDonna years ago, but, always the gracious gentleman, he added that we did look vaguely familiar. n

Change in Bylaws It is recommended that organizations review their bylaws every 3 to 5 years. The Suncoast PCA Bylaws were last updated in October 2015. Your Board of Directors has spent several months reviewing all the details of the Bylaws and, after unanimous approval of the proposed modifications, is presenting them to Suncoast PCA members for your approval. The changes appear as redline edits within the proposed Bylaws (red font highlighting text edits, specifically additions and strikethroughs or deletions). The changes include a reduction in the number of Board members (from 19 to 15) with a quorum of no less than 9 directors; defining the Executive Council; delineating Officer and Director term lengths and responsibilities; clarifying key committee roles; adding content related to the independence of PCA and Suncoast Region as recommended by PCA National; simplifying meeting, election and communication processes to align with current and anticipated future processes; and removing the specificity of the DE Hall of Fame replacing with a statement related to all the Region’s awards.

Your vote matters! The ballot appears on our Suncoast PCA website in an electronic format and all votes must be submitted electronically. You can vote “Yes” or “No” to the modified Bylaws. Go to suncoastpca.org/by-laws-voting-page to cast your vote. Votes must be submitted no later than Monday, November 16 at 5:00 pm EST.
