: Flood Affected Townships in Sagaing and Kachin (24 July 2015)

Update on recent floods in and Kachin State

Heavy seasonal rains from 14 to 19 July caused heavy flooding throughout the Sagaing Region of Myanmar. The Government's Relief and Resettlement Department (RRD) reported on 23 July that some 70,000 people have been affected by the floods in 11 townships in the Sagaing Region, with nine fatalities and over 12,000 houses damaged. The RRD in Sagaing report that over 40,000 people have been severely affected and/or displaced by the floods. Many schools in the area are reported to be closed due to the floods. These figures have not yet been independently verified by the UN.

Local authorities, the Union Government, the military, as well as the Myanmar Red CroINssD SIAociety (MRCS) and local civil society organizations are responding 3,639 with rescue operations and are providing food, water and other basic Mogaung necessities to those affected. A joint team comprised of the UN, INGOs, MRCS and RRD is currently visiting the worst affected areas to assess the situation KACHIN and humanitarian needs.

The UN has offered support and stands ready to assist response efforts in Sagaing should the scale of the emergency exceed the Government’s capacity to respond. BHUTAN INDIA CHINA As of 23 July, RRD reports that 827 households in Mogaung Township, Kachin BANGLADESH State, were displaced by the floods. The majority of those displaced are currently staying with host families, while 165 households are being VIETNAM accommodated in six locations. The Kachin State Government and RRD have MYANMAR provided food, drinking water, NFIs and cash assistance to flood affected 2,503 Nay Pyi Taw LAOS families. On 22 July, an UN inter-agency mission also provided tarpaulins, oral rehydration salts, dignity kits, sleeping mats and jerry cans for initial response. On 23 July, RRD indicated that emergency needs had been met, but that some humanitarian assistance may be required once the displaced return to their THAILAND homes. On 24 July, an inter-agency assessment team visited flood affected SAGAING areas to further assess needs. CAMBODIA
