Apps like Google Translate tend to make our everyday life easier by using Augmented Reality but they are also rapidly changing the way we perceive the world around us. As they are “extending our reality”, they are not only changing our sight of reality, but also raising the question if we used to live in a “reduced reality” so far. Word Lens was the first translation app dedicated to this AR-technology and was primarily developed for tourists living in a foreign-language country and who were in need of fast and reliable translations without an internet connection. As World Lens was bought by Google and later became the more-known Google Translate, the theoretic part of this master thesis is analyzing the development from the early World Lens beginnings to a now successful and worldwide known AR-translation-app. The aim of this master thesis is to answer the question why the technology behind the machine- generated translation is as complex and problematic as it is. It will also provide insights into the apps procedure and the technical, as well as the linguistic implementations. Furthermore, the quality of these machine-generated translations will be analyzed in order to find out if they are of high-quality and whether frequently occurring translation errors are either caused by cultural issues or due to a culture-specific prototype structure. It will also be tested how useful the Google Translate-app will work out on an everyday basis and compared to different types of texts such as menus, general conditions and local signs. The intention of this master thesis is to create a comprehensive study of the Google Translate- app and its overall performance. This includes on the one hand a qualitative self-analysis of the translation app itself and its related functions – augmented reality translation in camera mode and translation via voice recognition mode – and on the other hand, an online questionnaire with selected analysis criteria that will lead to more objective test results. 1 Abbildungsverzeichnis 1. Our May 6th announcement that we would be welcoming the first CMO in the MMA’s history to take up the position of Global Chairperson was significant for many reasons, not least of which is the incredible insight and leadership that John Costello brings to the role. This was also one of our first steps to truly aligning the MMA to a new marketer-first mission. Subsequently, on June 25th, we were pleased to announce the introduction, re-election and continuation of committed leaders to the MMA’s Global Board (read full press release here). Google's Machine Learning framework TensorFlow was open- sourced in November 2015 [1] and has since built a growing community around it. TensorFlow is supposed to be flexible for research purposes while also allowing its models to be deployed productively [7]. This work is aimed towards people with experience in Machine Learning consider- ing whether they should use TensorFlow in their environment. Several aspects of the framework important for such a decision are examined, such as the heterogenity, extensibility and its computation graph. A pure Python implementation of linear classification is compared with an im- plementation utilizing TensorFlow. I also contrast TensorFlow to other popular frameworks with respect to modeling capability, deployment and performance and give a brief description of the current adaption of the framework. 1 Introduction The rapidly growing field of Machine Learning has been gaining more and more attention, both in academia and in businesses that have realized the added value. For instance, according to a McKinsey report, more than a dozen European banks switched from statistical-modeling approaches to Machine Learning tech- niques and, in some cases, increased their sales of new products by 10 percent and arXiv:1611.08903v1 [cs.LG] 27 Nov 2016 20 percent increases in cash collections [20]. Intelligent machines are used in a variety of domains, including writing news articles [5], finding promising recruits given their CV [9] and many more.
