ANTOON DE BAETS Exile and Acculturation: Refugee Historians since the Second World War two forms, intended and unin- tended. Within the domain of historical writing, both exist. A famous example of intended historiographical contact was the arrival B - of the German historian Ludwig Riess ( ), a student of Leopold von Ranke, in Japan. On the recommendation of the director of the bureau of historiography, Shigeno Yasutsugu, Riess began to lecture at the Im- perial University (renamed Tokyo Imperial University in ) in . He spoke about the Rankean method with its emphasis on facts and critical, document- and evidence-based history. At his suggestion, Shigeno founded the Historical Society of Japan and the Journal of Historical Scholarship. Riess influenced an entire generation of Japanese historians, including Shigeno himself and Kume Kunitake, then well known for their demystification of entire areas of Japanese history.1 However, this famous case of planned acculturation has less well-known aspects. First, Riess, who was a Jew and originally a specialist in English history, went to Japan, among other reasons, possibly on account of the anti-Semitism and Anglo- phobia characteristic of large parts of the German academy at the time. Only in did he return from Japan to become an associate professor at the University of Berlin.2 Second, Riess and other German historians (such as Ernst Bernheim, whose Lehrbuch der historischen Methode und der Geschichtsphilosophie, published in , was popular in Japan) were influ- ential only because Japanese historical methodology focused before their arrival on the explication of documents.3 Riess’s legacy had unexpected I am very grateful to Georg Iggers, Shula Marks, Natalie Nicora, Claire Boonzaaijer, and Anna Udo for their helpful criticism. -

Thomas Cromwell – The man who did the most to ensure that the English had access to the Bible in their own language was Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII’s chancellor from 1533 to 1540. Cromwell (portrayed by Hans Holbein above) was the spirit behind an injunction requiring that a copy of the English Bible be placed in every parish church. Published in September 1538, the injunction ordered the clergy to provide “one book of the whole Bible of the largest volume in English” and place it where “your parishioners may most commodiously resort to the same and read it.” The “largest volume” referred to the Great Bible, then being printed in Paris at Cromwell’s expense. -

Robert Radcliffe’s Translation of Joannes Ravisius Textor’s Dialogi (1530) and the Henrician Reformation ágnes juhász-ormsby Memorial University Joannes Ravisius Textor’s Dialogi aliquot festivissimi (1530) exerted considerable influence in England in the 1530s. The English Textor movement was spurred primarily by the dialogues’ effectiveness in advancing and popularizing specific religious changes promoted by the government as part of the unfolding Henrician Reformation. Around 1540, the master of Jesus College School in Cambridge, Robert Radcliffe, dedicated a collection of prose translations of Textor’s three dialogues—A Governor, or of the Church (Ecclesia), The Poor Man and Fortune (Pauper et fortuna), and Death and the Goer by the Way (Mors et viator)—to Henry VIII. Radcliffe’s translations, especially the politically charged A Governor, demonstrate that not only his strategically selected source texts but also his method of translation helped him position himself in influential court circles and shape his image as a humanist scholar, schoolmaster, and translator.1 Les Dialogi aliquot festivissimi (1530) de Joannes Ravisius Textor ont exercé une influence importante en Angleterre pendant les années 1530. HISTORY EXTENSION Who Is The Historian? The question of who should write history has consistently been debated and challenged throughout history. The idea that history should be written by the elite was previously agreed upon as it was the elite who were to ultimately be reading and studying these said histories. However, such beliefs changed when people such as the Annales began to write their own histories for their own audiences and history itself became a universal subject with the help of Ranke. Leopold von Ranke was an influential German historian and educator who is frequently considered as one of the founders of modern source-based history. He, according to Warren, “he not only came up with a new historical technique based on rigid objectivity but also single-handedly created the history profession ...” Ranke’s scholarly method and way of teaching had a great influence on Western historiography and it was in his preface to his work that he stated his often quoted dictum: that he was writing history wie es eigentlich gewesen – as it happened. Ranke was born on the 21st December 1795 in the small town of Wiehe in Thuringia, Germany into an old Lutheran theologian family. During this time, Germany was not a nation-state but was a loose grouping of over three hundred separate states which owed allegiance on paper to the Holy Roman Emperor and in particularly, Thuringia, was a part of the Kingdom of Saxony but was awarded to Prussia by the peace terms of 1815 at the close of the Napoleonic wars. He wanted history to be a universal and scientific subject that would spread throughout schools so that everybody and not just ‘gentlemen’ could both study it and record it. -

This paper considers the conventions, both written and unwritten, that governed such activities in Renaissance Rome, setting them in the context of the extensive literature on gift-giving. While official, ceremonial gifts were often recorded in writing, the less licit payments with which this article is concerned were often not. However, there is enough of a paper trail to reconstruct at least some of the gift-giving practices at the papal court, and the essay considers diplomatic letters, trial records and prescriptive treatises in order to do so. -

The College and Canons of St Stephen’s, Westminster, 1348 - 1548 Volume I of II Elizabeth Biggs PhD University of York History October 2016 Abstract This thesis is concerned with the college founded by Edward III in his principal palace of Westminster in 1348 and dissolved by Edward VI in 1548 in order to examine issues of royal patronage, the relationships of the Church to the Crown, and institutional networks across the later Middle Ages. As no internal archive survives from St Stephen’s College, this thesis depends on comparison with and reconstruction from royal records and the archives of other institutions, including those of its sister college, St George’s, Windsor. In so doing, it has two main aims: to place St Stephen’s College back into its place at the heart of Westminster’s political, religious and administrative life; and to develop a method for institutional history that is concerned more with connections than solely with the internal workings of a single institution. As there has been no full scholarly study of St Stephen’s College, this thesis provides a complete institutional history of the college from foundation to dissolution before turning to thematic consideration of its place in royal administration, music and worship, and the manor of Westminster. The circumstances and processes surrounding its foundation are compared with other such colleges to understand the multiple agencies that formed St Stephen’s, including that of the canons themselves. Kings and their relatives used St Stephen’s for their private worship and as a site of visible royal piety. -
