3 Abstract: During the courts of 1646, John IV of Portugal declared Our Lady of Conception as the patroness of Portugal. At the same time, a alms was created for the main church of Vila Viçosa. This was considered the first temple dedicated to that invocation, in the Iberian Peninsula. It was however already a consolidated devotion that of the ducal house of Bragança, who, upon reaching the throne, strove to promote it. Like the royal family, the Court was also devoted itself to the patroness of Portugal, both in their oratories and in private chapels, as in Vila Viçosa. The main church of Vila Viçosa, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, maintained the cult of the patroness with considerable refinement, through the two brotherhoods based in the temple. This fact is related to the patrimony of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Conception, that had a great number of jewels and ornamental pieces. Also had houses and farms, leased through exploration contracts, have translated into one of their sources of income. The Brotherhood of the Slaves of Our Lady of Conception had large incomes through interest-rate cash loans and it was common to both brotherhoods to commit themselves to the great religious parties they dedicated to the patroness of Portugal. The image of Our Lady of Conception of Vila Viçosa, considered miraculous throughout the modern era, was venerated by great and small. This is what the royal family did, with the portuguese Court and with the elites of Vila Viçosa. Also the lower social groups, such as the Alentejo peasants, devoted themselves to the Immaculate Conception. They did it for the healing of diseases, left assets in testament or aid to the religious parties. Many of the alms were offered according to the devotees' possessions, through jewelry, clothing, flowers, or food (olive oil, cereals, animals, fruit and vegetables). INFORMATION TO USERS This material was produced from a microfilm copy of the original document. While the most advanced technological means to photograph and reproduce this document have been used, the quality is heavily dependent upon the quality of the original submitted. The following explanation of techniques is provided to help you understand markings or patterns which may appear on this reproduction. 1.The sign or "target" for pages apparently lacking from the document photographed is "Missing Page(s)". If it was possible to obtain the missing page(s) or section, they are spliced into the film along with adjacent pages. This may have necessitated cutting thru an image and duplicating adjacent pages to insure you complete continuity. 2. When an image on the film is obliterated with a large round black mark, it is an indication that the photographer suspected that the copy may have moved during exposure and thus cause a blurred image. You will find a good image of the page in the adjacent frame. 3. When a map, drawing or chart, etc., was part of the material being photographed the photographer followed a definite method in "sectioning" the material. It is customary to begin photoing at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue photoing from left to right in equal sections with a small overlap. If necessary, sectioning is continued again - beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete. 4. The majority of users indicate that the textual content is of greatest value, however, a somewhat higher quality reproduction could be made from "photographs" if essential to the understanding of the dissertation.

  • Dutch Sephardi Jewry, Millenarian Politics, and the Struggle for Brazil (1640-1654)
DUTCH SEPHARDI JEWRY, MILLENARIAN POLITICS, AND THE STRUGGLE FOR BRAZIL (1640-1654) JONATHAN I. ISRAEL The notion that Jews were a marginal, isolated group which took no sig nificant part in the great political struggles and rivalries of early modern times is so ingrained in the historiography of the period that any conten tion to the contrary is bound to seem startling and be looked on with scepticism. But the evidence that western Sephardi Jewry (and the Portu guese New Christians in Portugal) played a central role in the vast trian gular, trans-Atlantic struggle between Portugal, Spain and the Dutch in the 1640s is extensive and deserves to be analyzed more systematically than has been the case hitherto. The secession of Portugal from the Spanish crown in December 1640, the outcome of a conspiracy among the Portuguese nobility against Phil ip IV of Spain, and in favor of the Duke of Braganza, who was now pro claimed King John IV of Portugal, was one of the most dramatic events of the mid-seventeenth century - and one of the most far-reaching in its implications. Its effects, especially after Portuguese Brazil and the Portuguese East Indies followed Portugal itself in throwing off allegiance to the Spanish crown, during 1641, were indeed world-wide in scope. Portugal, a key market and hub of a global empire severed its links with the Spanish Monarchy, at that time still the largest and most powerful world imperium, starting a war in the Iberian Peninsula which was to last for over a quarter of a century1.

In the local context of the controversies with the apostolic vicars sent by the Congregation de Propaganda Fide, priests and missionaries of the Portuguese Padroado saw the Holy Office as an instrument to defend the rights of the Crown, arresting and excommunicating on behalf of the tribunal. Imperial agents in the Estado da Índia envisioned the Inquisition as an instrument for claiming jurisdictional rights over territory, while they also faced conflicts with the inquisitors. Keywords: Inquisition, Propaganda Fide, Padroado, Jurisdiction, Empire.
