Dozens of customers come in every day, but no one gives Noy a second look - she is not one of those girls that the eye lingers on. But everything changes when Avishai Milner comes into the ice-cream parlor. An embittered reality-show runaway, he insults and humiliates her. Deeply offended, Noy rushes out to the backyard, and Avishai—who is still waiting for his change—chases after her. “Leave me alone!” she cries with all her 17 mediocre years’ worth of hurt and frustration. Her screams alert the townsfolk, and to her surprise everyone is convinced that Avishai tried to sexually assault her. Now, for the first time in her life, Noy finds herself the center of attention. The support that she receives from the community turns her into a kind of Cinderella and the ice-cream salesgirl becomes a Media Princess. But the magic of this Cinderella story comes from her lies about an attack that did not actually happen. Ayelet Gundar-Goshen was born in Israel in 1982.     DAVID GROSSMAN Hans Christian Andersen Author Award 2020 Nominated by IBBY Israel A statement on the Grossman contribution to literature for children and young people. David Grossman (born in Jerusalem, 1954) is a major figure in contemporary Hebrew literature. He writes for older and younger readers, in alternating order: Following every adult book, Grossman publishes a book for younger readers, followed by an adult book, etc. In his literary and journalistic writing Grossman does not shy away from complicated and controversial issues. He fights for the human rights of people of all ages, genders, and ethnicities. He is active in social justice causes and in peace initiatives between Arabs and Jews. In 1982 he published his first children’s book, Duel, about a twelve- year-old boy who makes friends with an elderly man in a nursing home. His writing for children and young adults encompasses a wide range of topics. In his picture books, he focuses on aspects of children’s daily life (Uri’s Special Language; A Brand-New Baby Brother) or their rich and wonderful imaginations, which can generate all sorts of fears (Itamar Walks on Walls; Itamar Meets a Rabbit, Itamar the Dream Hunter), worries (Don’t Worry Ruti, Itamar the Dream Hunter), or fantasies, sometimes involving imaginary friends (Hadas’ Friend). In Grossman’s picture books, the child’s world contains an empathic adult, the father, who respects the child, listens to him lovingly, and is able to suggest an unusual solution to the difficulty confronting the child, which the child is in turn quick to accept (the Itamar books; Who Wants a Piggy-Back?, Don’t Worry Ruti, etc.) In his writing for young adults Grossman deals with complicated issues, including ones that were considered taboo in the young adult Hebrew literature of their day.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Cover : Deportation wagon, Auschwitz-Birkenau 1 Defending our values In 2015, a series of attacks by Islamists plunged France into mourning. Our values and our way of life were targeted and—once again—Jews were singled out. As we commemorate the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi camps, as we remember this victory of the civilized world over barbarity, new barbarians have brought bloodshed to our streets, killing in cold blood in the name of an ideology of hate. In the face of these horrors, we cannot give in to fear nor to the temp- tation to withdraw, but must do everything in our power to defend our model of tolerance and liberty. As part of its mission and to the best of its ability, the Foundation for the Memory of the Shoah aims to con- tribute to this combat. We have therefore bolstered our support in the combat against anti-Semitism and we will obviously continue to support education and knowledge of history. Today, more than ever, we want to transmit forcefully and with determination a message of fraternity from the survivors of the Shoah. Within this difficult context, the Foundation also intends to work with its partners to build the future of French Judaism. In 2015, we implemented an exceptional allocation of €10 million over three years so as to contrib- ute significantly to the financing of major projects. The goal is to support initiatives geared to strengthening French Judaism, with a particular fo- cus on educational and cultural projects. In opposition to those who would like to undermine the foundations of our society, we want to defend the shared values of Judaism and the Republic at one and the same time.

    Peremiczky Szilvia „Mert a szavak nyelve összezavarodott” Avraham Shlonsky és a francia szimbolizmus A 19. második felének új szellemi és fi lozófi ai irányzatai növekvő pesszimizmussal tekintettek a beszélt nyelv és a valóság érzékelésének és megértésének addig elfogadott módjaira. Különösen a racionalitás szerepe kérdőjeleződött meg, amelyet a modern korban először a romantika vont kétségbe, előtérbe helyezve az érzelmek, az álom, a képzelet szerepét. Ez a fi lozófi ai változás a romantikus költészet nyelvezetében is jelentős újításokat hozott, de az igazi poétikai fordulatot a dekadencia és a szimboliz- mus, mindenekelőtt a francia szimbolisták munkássága hozta el. A szimbolisták költői nyelvi forradalma,1 beleértve közvetlen elődeik és az úgynevezett neoszimbolisták költészetét is, az egész nyugati irodalomra és annak poétikájára hatalmas hatást gya- korolt, utat nyitva a szürrealizmus vagy az avantgárd radikális nyelvi újításainak is. Baudelaire, Mallarmé, Rimbaud, Verlaine lírája a magyar irodalomban többet között Ady, Kosztolányi és Tóth Árpád költészetét inspirálta, de a német, az angol, az orosz, az olasz és a spanyol nyelvű irodalom nyelvét is megújította. A szimbolizmus nyelvi forradalma éppen abban az időben érte el a modern hé- ber költészetet, amikor a beszélt héber nyelv újjászületése, a cionizmus és a modern héber kultúra jegyében a héber irodalmi nyelv maga is lázasan kereste az új utakat és lehetőségeket egy olyan irodalmi nyelv létrehozására, amely egyszerre képes a mo- dern világ megragadására, valamint a zsidó hagyomány és a héber nyelv tradícióinak a megőrzésére. A szimbolizmus a századfordulón és a huszadik század első évtizedeiben ösztönzően és megtermékenyítően hatott az első, már a brit mandátumi Palesztinában működő költőnemzedékekre. A modern héber irodalom első költőnemzedéke túlnyo- mórészt az orosz birodalomból érkezett, ezért a szimbolizmus mindenekelőtt az orosz irodalmon keresztül hatott költészetükre, esetleg a német vagy mint a Kárpátalján született Avigdor Hameiri esetében, Adyn, azaz a magyar irodalmon keresztül.

We are very excited to be able to share with you insights from the work of the Institute over the last several months. In this issue of the magazine, you will be able to read about our ongo- ing discussion on Zionism, a topic that has been the focus of many of the Institute’s recent activities and the research of many of its affiliated scholars. The subject of our annual conference, held this past fall, was the continuing relevance of Zionism as an organizing concept. It is no secret that Israel is undergoing a period of signif- icant change. The founding generation is dwindling and the second generation of state lead- ers – those who were children when the state was created but who turned Zionism from a revolution into an established, enduring and functioning state – are themselves passing on the reins to a generation that was born after the state was created. The Zionism that powered the transformation of the Jewish people from a diaspora nation into a sovereign nation-state must, naturally, evolve. In this issue of Israel Insti- tute Magazine, we report on our annual conference and the ideas that it raised in relation to the meaning of modern Zionism for today’s Israelis and for diaspora Jews.

Contact: [email protected] The Jewish Studies Book Awards: A Collection Development Strategy for Non-Sectarian Academic Libraries Izabella Taler Queens College Library, CUNY, Flushing, New York, USA Abstract Purpose – This paper aims to provide Jewish Studies collection development professionals in small and medium size academic libraries, with highly restricted budgets, with an alternate method of building quality collections. Design/methodology/approach – Sources of Jewish Studies literary awards were identified and a detailed analysis of awarded books’ subjects and the publishing sources was conducted. Findings – Results show that awarded books cover a vast variety of subjects of interest to Jewish Studies collections. Since many of them are also published by academic presses, the use of identified Jewish Studies book award sources should be considered by bibliographers responsible for building Jewish Studies collections in non- sectarian college libraries with very limited budgetary resources. Practical Implications – The “one stop” access to all award sources and awarded books provides an easy access to otherwise dispersed information. Originality/value – The comprehensive list of awards, nominated and winning titles, as well as the subject analysis presented herein, is the first of its kind.
