"Thank you for taking my daughter to Wales and giving her such an incredible opportunity. When she came home she seemed 5 years older! She had the time of her life and has not stopped talking about it since. She returned full of confidence and a belief that she can do anything." (Year 7 mum)

Confidence – Opportunity – Potential Year 7 pushed themselves to the limit in Snowdonia participating in some really adventurous and challenging activities last week; Year 8 showed resilience and grit as they coped with some inclement weather in France after half term; they have also just enjoyed competing in the Copthorne “Bake-off” challenge, judged by professional chefs, with the cakes, scones and sandwiches shared with their parents; Year 6 children are cycling their way towards passing Bikeability awards (the HM failed his cycling proficiency test when he was 11!); children swam well at despite not having trained in the school pool for several weeks (it is now open again!); Emi W came first in the IAPS National Under 12 Butterfly final and Katie F was second in the U11 Breaststroke event, held at the National Aquatic Centre in London. Our young chess players were magnificent in the UKI Championships, with the girls team victorious and the boys in second place; our wonderful “Carnival Float” committee were out in force last weekend preparing for tomorrows Horley Carnival; “Moving up“ morning enabled children from Oaks to Year 3 to spend time meeting their new teachers and classmates from September; sadly, Year 2 Rock pooling, Wednesdays sport and Thursday night Year 5 camping have all fallen foul of the weather, BUT the last two weeks have helped to develop children’s confidence, provide them with a wide range of opportunities, and has helped them realise their potential. This is what Copthorne is all about! Have a good weekend.

Please note that the school shop will be closed Monday and Thursday afternoon, but open in the mornings as usual. Apologies for any inconvenience caused.

In Maths we have been looking at odd and even numbers and finding patterns when we count in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. We have read the story about the Rainbow Fish and discussed how to be kind to others. We have written the story and look forward to decorating some fish soon.

The Nursery This week in Pippins class we have been making some very special presents for our daddies. All of the children enjoyed painting and colouring and baking in preparation for Father’s Day this week and we wish all of our Daddies a very happy and enjoyable day! Acorns class have been carrying on with our summer theme despite the weather! We have created some stripy bumblebees and had fun decorating buckets and spades using sand. We have also been busy creating a special something for our Daddies so keep an eye out in our book bags. There has been great excitement in Oaks with butterflies emerging! The children were very concerned to get their care Year 2 right so we gave them sugared water and little pieces of fruit in Sadly the unprecedented weather meant our trip to the their net. They have now been freed into the woods to find their RNLI and Rottingdean had to be postponed. (We are own food and enjoy their freedom! hoping to reinstate this trip in the penultimate week of term). Instead we spent the day dong seaside art activities At Francis Court the children and residents decorated some lovely and being ‘Secret Squirrels’, using the time to make chicks to link with the ‘ch’ sound. Lots of sequins were used to something for Sunday! help ‘bling’ the chicks up a little! We have been working on our puppets and some are now The children all had a wonderful time on Thursday in their new finished, as well as writing a new Punch and Judy routine, classes. They felt very grown up eating their lunch in the dining which we will enact once we have finished our puppets. hall and were very excited telling us all about their new classrooms and teachers, so much so that they were a little disappointed to In Maths this week we have been consolidating our come back to Nursery in the afternoon! understanding and knowledge of the 3 times table and multiplication in general, looking at arrays and patterns Reception created in number. Although the weather has been atrocious, the children helped to set up the ice cream parlour ready for summer role play. In literacy we have all worked very hard to create a surprise for our fathers! We have worked on writing 2 digit numbers, securing our knowledge and understanding of place value. We have been learning our songs ready for the Pre Prep summer concert on Wednesday 3 July, and thoroughly enjoying a new challenge in PE this week, bouncing along on space hoppers for our sports day event next week. The times achieved meant that we were well placed to achieve success but history has proved that it’s how you perform on the day that counts not where you are placed going in to Finals. The day didn’t start particularly well when the coach back from France was delayed and Emily didn’t arrive back in time to make it to London before her event. Success now rested with Emi and Katie who to their credit performed really well in the heats with Emi qualifying for the final of the U12 Butterfly in 1st place and Katie in the U11 Breaststroke in 3rd. Both girls held their nerve to again perform really well in the Finals. Emi’s event only lasts for 15 seconds so a good start is essential. Fortunately she achieved that and together with a strong swim meant that she was placed 1st in a time of 14.47. Katie had an even tougher job with the girl in 1st place 3 seconds faster than the rest of the field going in to the final. Again, Katie performed really well putting in an excellent turn and a very strong second length. Whilst she wasn’t able to make up the three second difference, she was able to secure a very creditable 2nd place in a time of 38.40 Well done to both girls for their performances on the day and for their contribution to school swimming throughout the year. Boarding News This week the boarders had a fantastic opportunity to undertake an activity they haven’t done before. We welcomed Craig Burgess (Head of Sport at Cumnor House), to deliver some forest archery skills. The boarders were all excited to get the opportunity to fire jelly bows, horseback bows and longbows. We were all taught the basics in a short 1-1 session, but then progressed on to speed shoots, target shoots and some shots at a polystyrene deer. All of the boarders picked up the basics very quickly and some scoring some fantastic shots. Including Bryan hitting the centre yellow of the target! Overall the boarders loved their experience and this is something we will certainly look to do again in the future.

It is Bikeability Week! Despite the rain, Year 6 were being put through their paces working towards their National Standard Level 1 Certificate with Surrey County Council keeping a close eye on the children and teaching them the rules of the road to keep themselves and others safe!

Norweigan Forest Cats Year 5 presentations started with Marcus talking about his 2 cats, Sundance and Cassidy. They are Norwegian Forest Cats and are only 2 years old so will grow even bigger, up to 9kg! Forest School in Year 3 Year 3 have been having some great sessions in forest schools over the past couple of weeks. Their problem solving skills were put to the test as they had to work in teams to get each member of the class through the holes of the spider’s web. The following week the children have been making bows and arrows using string and wood. Lots of smiles and fun had by all.

Geography Field Trip for Year 7 The Year 7 pupils fresh from getting rained on in Snowdonia, set off to Birling Gap in East Sussex hoping for better weather on Monday to collect data for their Geography CE Fieldwork task. Sadly they were to be disappointed, but at least it was only with the weather! They braved the rain (and dodged it at times in the National Trust (NT) Education Centre) to collect Longshore Drift and coastal erosion data, whilst gaining an understanding of why the NT have chosen a policy of ‘Managed Retreat’ for this famous coastal erosion hotspot. Students will prepare for the task over the coming weeks and write up the study over their summer break, perhaps taking the chance to visit the site in better weather!

Life Coaching News Here we are – session 6 of 6……..the final life coach session for each year 7. This session focuses attention on the Moving Up Day following things: Year 3 had a fabulous morning in Year 4! #movingupday • Evaluating the year – what went well? • What would I change/do differently • What am I ACTUALLY going to DO? • How do I plan to be better in Year 8? Students are doing this in small groups, moving around a wheel on the floor which has suggested topics….like health, learning, friendships, hobbies, school, etc. The children worked together and got a chance to ‘be a coach’ – asking good questions, listening and responding (appropriately) and encouraging their peers to think about themselves and what they want. I have witnessed some great questioning and coaching from the year 7’s! Very well done! Year 8 Enrichment Programme Following their final examinations which took place before half term, Year 8 have begun their Enrichment Programme. It is designed specifically to enrich their learning, free from the constraints of the examination syllabi; a period where there is time to explore and expand their knowledge beyond normal expectations. This is achieved through a series of activities and challenges, most intellectual, some physical but all with the aim of developing new skills and equipping the children to be able to face the challenges of moving to their new schools and beyond. This week they have solved a murder, baked and baked and worked as a team!

It's a Bake Off! What a climax to the first Copthorne Prep School Bake off - the standards were very high, presentation wonderful and much was learnt whilst having a great time cooking. Parents enjoyed the tea party tasting the yummy sandwiches, scones and carefully designed cakes. Whilst everyone worked really hard to create a masterpiece, the winners were Emily (1st), Jake (2nd) and Macey (3rd). Judges Karen and Adam sent a lovely message to all of Year 8 - "the standard was very high and we could see how hard they worked, well done to everyone". Chess News Update

It has been a busy final six weeks of the chess season and there is plenty of Copthorne success on which to report. Following the success of Niamh G at the Hampshire Delancey Megafinal in Winchester on Sunday 28 April, Copthorne fielded a further 15 players at the Sussex Megafinal held on Saturday May 11 in . There were many, many terrific performances so well done to Avyanna S (2nd, 4.5/6), Adi G (2nd, 5/6), George T (4th, 4.5/6), Daniel A-D (3.5/6), Aran S (3.5/6), Sorcha C (3/6), Taran S (4th, 4.5/6), Amelie R (6/6 and Delancey Suprema), Ann T (=3rd, 3.5/6), Natalie V-H (=3rd, 3.5/6), Arun G (3rd, 5/6), Rex R (4/6), Rafe C (4/6) and Daniel V-H (3.5/6). It was also pleasing to see Amelie's sister and Copthorne alumnus Sophie win the U12 Suprema title. Despite there being 400 players in attendance from across the county, Copthorne Prep dominated the tournament and an astonishing 94% of our players will compete in the Southern Gigafinal, due to be held in July in Esher. The final Grand Prix event of the Sussex Junior Chess season was held at a warm and sunny Worthing College on 18 May. Copthorne fielded 12 players of whom 8 competed in the U11 Minors (George T, Ann T, Adi G, Daniel V-H, Goshan A, Niamh G, Daniel A-D and Natalie V-H) whilst 4 competed in the U11 Majors. The results on the day did not go entirely to plan or grading but that is the nature of chess sometimes. Despite this, George and Ann T both scored 3/6 and Ann was awarded an Arbiter's Award to boot. Adi G scored a wonderful 3/5 before being reluctantly escorted out of the venue due to the need to attend a birthday party, a clear sign that Adi is enjoying his chess at the moment. The results in the U11 Majors were more in line with expectations despite Amelie snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in Round 5 by losing against the eventual winner. Amelie's 2nd place finish was some consolation and Taran had a well earned 3rd place finish so both should be looking for promotion early next season. On 21 May, Copthorne A (the youngest team as usual) travel to Windlesham School to participate in the finals of the prestigious Butler Cup Championships, an U14 event. Looking very smart in their school uniforms, if somewhat diminutive in comparison to most of their competitors, Copthorne A acquitted themselves admirably coming a very respectable 2nd in the Butler Plate. Sunday 9 June saw our U7 team comprising Aarav B, Adi G, Aiyana F, Avyanna S, Rohan B and William C make their way to Great Walstead School to participate in the Sussex Junior Chess U7 Championships. Whilst Copthorne have had great success previously at this event, expectations were exceeded with Adi sharing first place with 5/5 and Avyanna S finishing a creditable 7th. Most importantly, however, Copthorne Prep won the Top School Team trophy for the first time ever squeezing Ardingly into second place and laving the rest in their wake. (see photograph in the Pre-Prep section of the newsletter) Our Copthorne Boys and Girls Prep teams meanwhile headed North to Sandown Park to participate in the UK and Ireland Individual and Team Championships. This very large event involved many hundreds of players and large squads from some of the top schools in the country. Copthorne were not there to make up numbers, however, as our Boys' team were reigning champions and our Girls' team were 2nd last year and won the tournament in 2017. Our Boys' squad were represented by Aran S, Daniel A-D, George T, Goshan A. Moiz A, Jamie L, Taran S, Arun G, Rex R and Daniel V-H. Our Girls' team, a small but determined unit, comprised Niamh G, Amelie R, Ann T and Natalie V-H. There were so many outstanding performances at this tournament it would be unfair to pick out any particular individuals. It was notable, however, that prizes were given to all children scoring 11 points or more out of possible 15, and 11 of our 14 players achieved that and in may cases better. The Boys' tournament was touch and go throughout with Copthorne vying for first place with 2017 winners St Pauls throughout the competition with Aldro and Tiffin not too far behind. After a nail-biting period of score tallying, Copthorne Prep Boys scored 51/60 finishing 2nd just one point behind St Pauls. The Girls competition was particularly strong this year with Guildford High School, Sutton High School, St Catherine's and Lady Eleanor Holles fielding formidable teams. All of our Girls scored heavily with Amelie winning the U9 title with 5/5 during which Ann was unlucky to have to play Amelie in Round 4 which meant a loss of points in that round was inevitable whatever the result. The Girls' final score was 53/60 regaining their title from 2017 and finishing a full two points higher than second place school Sutton High. Well done to every single one of our chess players for their enthusiasm, commitment and many achievements over the past 12 months. Remember to practice from time to time over the summer.
