Chapter President Mary Dawson welcomed the new members and encouraged them to become actively involved in the service-oriented organization which is celebrating in 2008 the local chapter’s 25th anniversary. TLOD has a “five star thrust:” *To improve the status of women, *To sponsor a youth organization known as Top Teens of America and provide opportunities for the wholesome development of their potential, *To provide service to senior citizens, *To aid in community beautification projects and *To share community partnerships by networking with other community organizations. During this year the chapter has hosted an annual prayer breakfast, provided clothing to women and children in its “Wake Up Youth” initiative, sponsored reading projects for youth with its “Boys Booked on Barber Shops” and “Girls Booked on Beauty Shops” efforts and initiated a community beautification project by planting flowers at the home of the late jazz great Art Tatum, among other projects. The TLOD literacy project, under the title “Status of Women Thrust” has developed a mentoring project with the Horizons’ Math, Science and Technology Academy and has presented workshops on vocabulary enrichment and exten- sion and seminars on self esteem.
