About Purim

The festival of Purim is celebrated every year on the 14th of the Hebrew month of Adar (late winter/early spring). It commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from Haman’s plot “to destroy, kill and an- nihilate all the Jews, young and old, infants and women, in a single day.”

The Story in a Nutshell

The Persian empire of the 4th century BCE extended over 127 lands, and all the Jews were its subjects. When King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti, executed for failing to follow his orders, he orchestrated a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen—though she refused to divulge the identity of her nationality.

Meanwhile, the anti-Semitic Haman was appointed prime minister of the empire. Morde- chai, the leader of the Jews (and Esther’s cousin), defied the king’s orders and refused to bow to Haman. Haman was incensed and convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the extermination of all the Jews on the 13th of Adar—a date chosen by a lottery Haman made.

Mordechai galvanized all the Jews, convincing them to repent, fast and pray to G‑d. Meanwhile, Esther asked the king and Haman to join her for a feast. At the feast, Esther revealed to the king her Jew- ish identity. Haman was hanged, Mordechai was appointed prime minister in his stead, and a new decree was issued—granting the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies.

On the 13th of Adar the Jews mobilized and killed many of their enemies. On the 14th of Adar they rested and celebrated. Hadassah

Hadassah Book Club Hi Book Readers: The Hadassah ladies have been meeting for twelve years to discuss meaningful books that we have read. Here we are getting ready to discuss “The Midwife of Venice” by Roberta Rich. This month we are reading Jodi Picoult’s “The Storyteller”. We will meet Sunday, March 9th. in the Temple library at 10:00 am. We will need to look into our moral beliefs, our philosophy of life and our religious ideas that we live by.

Come to the Temple and help us with our discussion.

See you March 9th. Harriet Light

A Note from the Director The school year is going by so fast. The children are learning Hebrew, singing songs, learning ethics, values, prayers, and lots of bible stories!!! The older children have decided to dedicate their Tzadakah funds collected throughout the year to the Ronald McDonald House. The house was created for families in need of a place to stay while their children are at the hospital for treatment. Our children are having fun and are excited to learn all about what it means to be a good Jew by caring for others. We are so proud of our children and parents who are always happy to participate.

Thank You, Patricia Edelstein

Hebrew Cemetery:

Marcos Teverovsky was born in 1918 and lived his early life in a shetl near Bahia Blanca, Argentina, which is southwest of Buenos Aires. This was one of the agricul- tural settlements founded by Baron Maurice von Hirsch.

Baron Hirsch was a wealthy German banker and philanthropist who paid for large scale immigration of prosecuted European Jews to Argentina starting in the late 1890’s. Argentina had a campaign to attract immigrants to less populous areas of the country.

Marcos’ parents were originally from Russia and Poland. Marcos married Rebecca in Argentina and they had one son, Ricardo. Marcos and his small family moved to Chile where they were very happy. Unfortunately, Rebecca died young.

Marcos had a life of adventure and travel. He owned race horses and had success in winning races. He lived in many South American countries including Venezuela and Peru, owning restaurants where he greeted his customers with his wonderful flourish of friendly charm. He was always popular with the ladies.

Marcos enjoyed the opportunities offered in border cities and relocated to Browns- ville. He opened several businesses in the downtown, including El Faro on Elizabeth Street. He attended services at Temple Beth-El and made close friends of Darrel Hol- land and others.

Marcos Teverovsky passed away in 2002 and is buried in the Hebrew Cemetery.
