Modern Group Portraits in New York Exile Community and Belonging in the Work of Arthur Kaufmann and Hermann Landshoff Burcu Dogramaci In the period 1933–1945 the group portrait was an important genre of art in exile, which has so far received little attention in research.1 Individual works, such as Max Beckmann’s group portrait Les Artistes mit Gemüse, painted in 1943 in exile in Amsterdam,2 were indeed in the focus. Until now, however, there has been no systematic investigation of group portraits in artistic exile during the Nazi era. The following observations are intended as a starting point for further investigations, and concentrate on the exile in New York and the work of the emigrated painter Arthur Kaufmann and photographer Hermann Landshoff in the late 1930s and 1940s, who devoted themselves to the genre of group portraits. 3 New York was a destination that attracted a much larger number of emigrant artists, writers, and intellectuals than other places of exile, such as Istanbul or Shanghai. A total of 70,000 German-speaking emigrants who fled from National Socialism found (temporary) refuge in New York City, including—among many others—the painters Arthur Kaufmann and Lyonel Feininger, and the photographers Hermann Landshoff, Lotte Jacobi, Ellen Auerbach, and Lisette Model.4 Such an accumulation of emigrated artists and photographers in one place may explain the increasing desire to visualize group formats and communal compositions. In the genre of the group picture there are attempts to compensate for the displacement from the place of origin.5 This mode of self-portrayal as a group can be 1/15 found in the photographic New York group portraits where the exiled surrealists had their pictures taken together or with their American colleagues. -

ABSTRACT In the seventh grade, students study early twentieth-century artists who dealt with expressionism and abstraction. Marc Chagall was an artist working during the same time frame as Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, and Marcel Duchamp. Many of these artists, along with others, influenced the art of Marc Chagall. While studying other important artists of the time period it is important to look at Marc Chagall’s contributions as an artist. After looking at Chagall’s life and his artwork, the students will create works of art that are similar to Chagall’s style. II. OVERVIEW A. Concept Objectives 1. Students will recognize and use the visual arts as a form of communication. (Colorado Model Content Standard 1) 2. Students will understand visual arts materials, tools, techniques, and processes. REPRESENTATIONS OF “LE TRAVAIL” UNDER THE JULY MONARCHY (1830-1848) by Rebecca Terese Powers A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland July, 2015 Representations of le travail under the July Monarchy ABSTRACT This project traces the definition of a social reality of labor under the July Monarchy. More specifically, it investigates how the ubiquitous but elusive term travail – understood as manual, non-agricultural work – operates at different levels of discourse in the 1830s and 1840s. To underline this specific cultural context, I employ the French travail rather than the English “work” or “labor.” French workers expected improved social conditions after their contribution to the 1830 Revolution, but were promptly denied this by the new Constitutional Monarchy. Their frustration came to a head in 1848, when they again revolted, demanding the right to work – le droit au travail. This moment is often considered the dawn of the French labor movement, but I contend that it is in the years leading up to 1848 that travail undergoes its most dramatic definition and consecration as a modern value. In order to better understand how the term took on such significance, I examine a variety of cultural documents, both literary and what we would today consider paraliterary. The corpus includes novels by Honoré de Balzac and George Sand; moralist inquiries by René Villermé and Honoré-Antoine Frégier; Jules Michelet’s historiography of the French people; and writings by the workers themselves, whose first-hand accounts of physical labor were becoming increasingly influential. -

In 1906, at the age of 21, he moved to Paris. Many factors shaped his decision. Born in the port city of Livorno, he belonged to an educated family of Sephardic Jews (descended from Spain and Portugal), who encouraged his ambition and exposed him to languages and literature. He had seen great Renaissance art and had trained as a painter. But Paris offered excitement. Paris offered variety. There he would encounter ways of thinking, seeing and behaving that challenged and shaped his work. This exhibition opens with a self-portrait, painted around 1915, in which Modigliani presents himself as the tragic clown Pierrot. His contemporaries would have recognised the reference instantly as, at the time, the figure appeared in countless pictures, plays and films. A young person shaping their identity could relate to Pierrot, a stock character open to interpretation, linked to the past and looking towards the future. Pierrot could be comedic, melancholy or romantic, played by any actor or painted by any artist. -

SONIA DELAUNAY'S YELLOW NUDE, 1908 BY Laura Ryan ABSTRACT In this thesis, I demonstrate that Yellow Nude includes a number of pointed references to historic stereotypes and contemporaneous tropes that embroil the artist’s identity in the primitivist ideologies she apparently appropriates. I first identify the background design within the painting as that of a turn of the century ikat textile, with Central Asian, Jewish, and Russian production histories that mimic the biographic transnationality of Delaunay herself. Delaunay therefore invites viewers to conflate the figure in the painting with the woman who made it, capitalizing on the perceived “exoticism” of her “primitive” cultural upbringing. UNDER THE HIGH PATRONAGE OF HIS SERENE HIGHNESS PRINCE ALBERT II OF MONACO FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO POP ART Under the High Patronage of His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco FROM IMPRESSIONISM TO POP ART Après l’immense succès de l’exposition “Picasso” en 2011, Opera Gallery Monaco présente cet été “de l’Impressionnisme au Pop Art”. Une exposition prestigieuse qui, à travers plus de 50 tableaux et dessins de grands Maîtres, nous permet de suivre la période de l’Histoire de l’Art qui va de la Révolution impressionniste au choc du Pop Art. Les tubes d’étain ont été inventés vers 1840, ils ont permis aux peintres impressionnistes de sortir de leur atelier pour aller peindre des paysages “sur le motif”, c’est-à-dire dans la nature. De la même manière, la peinture acrylique diluable à l’eau est créée en 1963, elle est immédiatement adoptée par les peintres Pop Art. Andy Warhol, est le premier utilisateur de cette peinture industrielle qui accompagne de manière pertinente son discours sur la société de consommation. Entre ces deux écoles illustrées par des tableaux de Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir d’un coté et Andy Warhol de l’autre, nous découvrons des œuvres de Fernand Léger, Marc Chagall mais aussi Joan Miró avec le splendide tableau Untitled, 1960 ou encore Fernando Botero. Enfin, nous n’avons pas résisté au plaisir de mettre en page de couverture du catalogue la gouache et aquarelle Les Grâces naturelles de René Magritte, un hommage au Maître du Surréalisme dans sa période influencée par Renoir, tout un symbole pour cette exposi- tion qui retrace la période de l’Histoire de l’Art aujourd’hui la plus prisée par les collectionneurs avertis et la plus recherchée par les amateurs de “valeurs refuges”.
