Ives “All passes; art alone enduring stays to us; I lie bust outlasts the throne^ the coin, Tiberius.” A I an early day after the opening of the Exposition, it became evident that there was a large class of visitors made up of students, teachers and others, who desired a more extensive and intimate knowledge of individual works than could be gained from a cursory view, guided by a conventional catalogue. 11 undreds of letters from persons especially interested in acquiring intimate knowledge of the leading char¬ acteristics of the various schools of expression repre¬ sented have been received; indeed, for two months be¬ fore the opening of the department, every mail carried replies to such letters, giving outlines of study, courses of reading, and advice to intending visitors. -

An apt description of this remarkable, luxuriant flower piece whose fantastic, iridescent forms entwine into rich, intricate layers of texture and tone. Rising from a small, central vase, Chagall’s intense and exubrant flowers almost fill the canvas, the vibrant blooms exploding from their verdant, blue/green foliage like fireworks. A delicate balance of painting and drawing, the arrangement defines and densely layers a variety of flora, contrasting luscious passages of brilliant, opaque colour with bright patches of paper, revealing the artist’s sophisticated gouache technique and power as a colourist. A lyrical painter-poet in his own right, Chagall’s vital vision of miraculous bounty is framed, but not bounded by an open window on the left with two ethereal figures delineated beneath in a pale, otherworldly predella. -

A Walkabout Around Historical Blasieholmen and Nybroviken in Stockholm Along the Baltic Sea Water Inlet to Stockholm
A Walkabout around historical Blasieholmen and Nybroviken in Stockholm along the Baltic Sea water inlet to Stockholm. Our walkabout will start at Kungsträdgården (King’s Garden) and continue along the streets around Blasieholmen towards Nybroviken (New Bridge Bay), where we will view many objects of interests. We will receive more value from the walkabout if we develop a better un- derstanding of the local history of an area when we are viewing the many visual objects. Area around Blasieholmen and Nybroviken Photo: Arlid Vågen I’m arriving at Kungsträdgården Metro Station (1), located in the district of Norrmalm. The platform is located approximately 115ft (34m) under ground. During the exit from the metro station I see several relics rescued from the many buildings demolished, during the some- times tragic redevelopment period of central Stockholm during the period of the 1950s and 1960s. I continue walking along the Birgit Nils- son Allè towards the Stockholm Ström water- front area. Birgit Nilsson was the Swedish world known dramatic opera soprano excelling Walking map for this Walkabout in Wagner style operas. The park Kungsträdgården is divided into four distinct spaces: Square of Charles XII; Molin’s Fountain; Square of Charles XIII and “Fountain of Wolodarski”. My absolute favorite is Charles XII statue, on my right in the middle of the park, with his arm pointing eastward. The story is that he had some un- finished business with the Russians (what’s new...). During the spring time Kungsträdgården presents a stunning view of flower- ing cherry blossoms for the visitor. I soon arrive at Stockholm Ström and see the Royal Castle to my right across the water and the famous Grand Hotel (2) and Nationalmuseum (3) to my left. -

Resistance, Resurrection, Liberation: Beyond the Existing Readings of Marc Chagall’s Crucifixion Paintings A thesis submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Art in Art History in the Department of the School of Art of the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) by Jennifer Horvath March 10, 2015 B.S. University of Virginia May, 1993 Committee Chair: Kimberly Paice, Ph.D. Abstract This study deals with a small body of crucifixion scenes that were rendered by the well- known Russian and Jewish Expressionist artist Marc Chagall (1887-1985). It closely reads these works, made between 1937 and 1952 when Chagall lived in exile in France and the United States. Extensive scholarship and The Jewish Museum’s exhibition Chagall: Love, War, and Exile (2013-14), have emphasized ways that these paintings speak to the then-current tragedies and suffering of Jews associated with the Holocaust. This study builds on this established research. Yet, it offers a nuanced reading of the iconographical and compositional strategies that Chagall uses. Here, the lyrical-expressionist style and dream-like spatial qualities of his early modernist works infuses his painted crucifixions with the condition of exile. By emphasizing the circulation of the affects of love and hate through a network of signs, Chagall ties the theme of the crucifixion to a life of perpetual exile and to the sense of not belonging that goes with such a life. As explained in the study, Chagall’s crucifixion scenes relate as much to the suffering of humanity and Jews in the Holocaust as to the hoped-for liberation and subsequent failed promises of the Russian Revolution, to Chagall’s childhood in the Pale of Settlement, and to his lifelong experience of exile and desire to find a place in the world. -

MODERNISM PRESS RELEASE VIENNA 1900 BIRTH OF MODERNISM FROM 16TH MARCH 2019 The exhibition Vienna 1900. Birth of Modernism has been conceived as the Leopold Muse- um’s new permanent presentation. It affords insights into the enormous wealth and diver- sity of this era’s artistic and intellectual achievements with all their cultural, social, political and scientific implications. Based on the collection of the Leopold Museum compiled by Ru- dolf Leopold and complemented by select loans from more than 50 private and institutional collections, the exhibition conveys the atmosphere of the former metropolis Vienna in a unique manner and highlights the sense of departure characterized by contrasts prevalent at the turn of the century. The presentation spans three floors and features some 1,300 exhibits over more than 3,000 m2 of exhibition space, presenting a singular variety of media ranging from painting, graphic art, sculpture and photography, via glass, ceramics, metals, GUSTAV KLIMT textiles, leather and jewelry, all the way to items of furniture and entire furnishings of apart- Death and Life, 1910/11, reworked in 1915/16 ments. The exhibition, whose thematic emphases are complemented by a great number of Leopold Museum, Vienna archival materials, spans the period of around 1870 to 1930.
