  • Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: an Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world.

  • Second Essay Paek Soondo
Paek 1 Paek Soondo Professor Ashline Advanced Writing May 1, 2016 Kiha and the Unpolitical Faces Has Chang Kiha been political? Two years ago when I read Cha Woojin's review of Sarame Maum [Human Mind], the third album of Kiha and the Faces, I could not help but murmur the question. In the article, Cha claimed that the title track had in itself “sisajeogin nwiangsu [implications of current events]," evoking universal emotions of specific memories related with Sewol Ferry Disaster and its aftermath (Cha). I do enjoy reviews that combine a sociocultural perspective, and Cha is a writer that I usually trust, but this one was a bit perplexing; not only could I not find any palpable allusion in the lyrics, but Chang Kiha, the leader of Kiha and the Faces, had never raised a political voice in his career as far as I knew. I followed him since I got into middle school, the year when Kiha made his debut, when everyone else of my age was interested in idol groups. I admit disregarding idol singers was a bit of snobbism, but Kiha's music as well as a sudden rise to fame did strike me as more compelling. Graduated from Social Science College of Seoul National University, often called "the cradle of Korean progress," he became an indie syndrome with his first single, "Ssaguryeo Keopi [Cheap Coffee]," whose lyrics were a realistic portrait of an unemployed young man, so he seemed destined to be an intelligent-political-indie folk artist. Back then, I liked folk guitar sound, started to hang around the school library and were finding interest in politics and society, and therefore Kiha was going to be a perfect fit.

In the Infinite Challenge show, the personae release pent-up energy through endless challenges, sustain positive attitudes towards life by wiping away tears through laughter, have fun with playful deception games or word play, act like childish fools (pabo) and pranksters (kŏndal) who indulge their unbound desires, and interact with participatory audiences in an open structure. Coupled with previous research confirming that traditional communication styles shape modes of expression in contemporary media content, we believe this study can provide empirical evidence to substantiate the creative potential of local traditional narrative in indigenizing global media programs. Keywords: media narrative, reality TV show, global-local nexus, sinmyŏng, Korean traditional performances Infinite Challenge (Muhan tojŏn) is a popular reality TV show that has aired every Saturday evening in South Korea since 2005.

However, a key question in this topiC about how humans aCquire the CapaCity to understand that numbers make ‘infinite use of finite means’ (or that numbers are generative) has been left unanswered. Here, we test the hypothesis that children’s understanding of the syntaCtiC rules for building complex numerals—or numeriCal syntax—is a crucial foundation for the aCquisition of number concepts. In two independent studies, we assessed children’s understanding of numeriCal syntax by probing their knowledge about the embedded structure of Cardinal numbers using a novel task called Give-a-number Base-10 (Give-N10). In Give-N10, Children were asked to give a large number of items (e.g., 32 items) from a pool that is organized in sets of ten items. Children’s knowledge about the embedded structure of numbers (e.g., knowing that thirty-two items are Composed of three tens and two ones) was assessed from their ability to use those sets. Study 1 tested English-speaking 5- to 10-year-olds and revealed that Children’s understanding of the embedded structure of numbers emerges relatively late in development (several months into kindergarten), beyond when they are capable of making a semantiC induction over a local sequence of numbers.

  • An LDS Contribution to the Virtues and Vices Tradition
ARTICLES AND ESSAYS Home and Adventure: An LDS Contribution to the Virtues and Vices Tradition Shawn R. Tucker Recent years have seen renewed scholarly interest in the tradition of the virtues and vices.1 This tradition has roots in both Judeo- Christian and Greco-Roman ethics, and reached the height of its Western cultural importance during the medieval period. Since that time, many artists and thinkers have continued and further developed the virtues and vices tradition. Edmund Spenser‘s The Faerie Queene (1590-96) and Benjamin Franklin‘s Autobiography (1791) both expand this tradition, with Spenser’s lively stories about the power of virtue and the danger of vice and with Frank- lin’s description of his aborted attempt at a handbook on “The Art of Virtue.” In addition, Oscar Rejlander’s landmark photograph Two Ways of Life (1857) is an allegory of the contrasting paths of virtue and vice. Other artists have focused particularly on the seven deadly sins, notably Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht in their The Seven Deadly Sins (1933) and the series by American artist Paul Cadmus titled The Seven Deadly Sins (1945–49). Though Mormons are, of course, interested in virtue and vice, the lack of direct engagement with this tradition raises this ques- tion: Could there be a meaningful LDS contribution to the virtues and vices tradition? This article explores the possibility of just such an LDS contribution, beginning with a brief introduction to the tradition and an examination of four lists of virtues common to LDS culture. Such a survey reveals the important pedagogical aspect of the virtues and vices tradition.
