CRITICAL VOICE TO CHANGE THE WORLD LETTER Time To Change This is the first 'The Sookmyung Times' of 2021. An unimaginable year has passed, and a new year has begun. How are you planning on spending the school year? Will you be complacent and go along with the status quo or will you show some fresh innovation? Personally, I would love to stay in the previous year. We might not be able to look ahead this year again, and everything that we planned might be wasted. We might be struggling through difficulties that we would have never imagined. But we can't live in the past. Change always comes unexpectedly. This year, I began the year as new editor-in-chief of The Sookmyung Times. I am neither good at writing nor a talented writer, but I accepted the position because I wanted to push through the struggles and see my new potential through change. Although this issue is my first as editor-in-chief, I will try hard to make The Sookmyung Times excellent. I promise to be more responsible and careful, which will require a lot of effort on my part. These changes are the kind of effort and development I will go through until the end of this year. Sookmyungians, I guess you will also experience a number of changes over the year. While the changes may be unfamiliar and awkward, our lives will continue and there will be a continual series of new changes. It is only through progress towards a new tomorrow that we will grow accustomed to change. I hope change and the drive to face change are the driving forces for you this year. Find the year,a year of challenge, a year of overcoming limitations, and a year that moves you forward in life. "Make your Change by yourself. Change does not happen on its own." • Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: an Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave
International Journal of Communication 15(2021), 1810–1835 1932–8036/20210005 Cultural Production in Transnational Culture: An Analysis of Cultural Creators in the Korean Wave DAL YONG JIN1 Simon Fraser University, Canada By employing cultural production approaches in conjunction with the global cultural economy, this article attempts to determine the primary characteristics of the rapid growth of local cultural industries and the global penetration of Korean cultural content. It documents major creators and their products that are received in many countries to identify who they are and what the major cultural products are. It also investigates power relations between cultural creators and the surrounding sociocultural and political milieu, discussing how cultural creators develop local popular culture toward the global cultural markets. I found that cultural creators emphasize the importance of cultural identity to appeal to global audiences as well as local audiences instead of emphasizing solely hybridization. Keywords: cultural production, Hallyu, cultural creators, transnational culture Since the early 2010s, the Korean Wave (Hallyu in Korean) has become globally popular, and media scholars (Han, 2017; T. J. Yoon & Kang, 2017) have paid attention to the recent growth of Hallyu in many parts of the world. Although the influence of Western culture has continued in the Korean cultural market as well as elsewhere, local cultural industries have expanded the exportation of their popular culture to several regions in both the Global South and the Global North. Social media have especially played a major role in disseminating Korean culture (Huang, 2017; Jin & Yoon, 2016), and Korean popular culture is arguably reaching almost every corner of the world.

  • Second Essay Paek Soondo
Paek 1 Paek Soondo Professor Ashline Advanced Writing May 1, 2016 Kiha and the Unpolitical Faces Has Chang Kiha been political? Two years ago when I read Cha Woojin's review of Sarame Maum [Human Mind], the third album of Kiha and the Faces, I could not help but murmur the question. In the article, Cha claimed that the title track had in itself “sisajeogin nwiangsu [implications of current events]," evoking universal emotions of specific memories related with Sewol Ferry Disaster and its aftermath (Cha). I do enjoy reviews that combine a sociocultural perspective, and Cha is a writer that I usually trust, but this one was a bit perplexing; not only could I not find any palpable allusion in the lyrics, but Chang Kiha, the leader of Kiha and the Faces, had never raised a political voice in his career as far as I knew. I followed him since I got into middle school, the year when Kiha made his debut, when everyone else of my age was interested in idol groups. I admit disregarding idol singers was a bit of snobbism, but Kiha's music as well as a sudden rise to fame did strike me as more compelling. Graduated from Social Science College of Seoul National University, often called "the cradle of Korean progress," he became an indie syndrome with his first single, "Ssaguryeo Keopi [Cheap Coffee]," whose lyrics were a realistic portrait of an unemployed young man, so he seemed destined to be an intelligent-political-indie folk artist. Back then, I liked folk guitar sound, started to hang around the school library and were finding interest in politics and society, and therefore Kiha was going to be a perfect fit.

Topic modelling is first conducted using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a method that has seen great success when applied to formal texts. As LDA attempts to learn latent topics by analysing term co-occurrences within documents, it can encounter difficulties in the learning process when presented with shorter documents such as tweets. To address the inadequacies of LDA applied to short-text, a second topic modelling technique is considered, known as the Biterm Topic Model (BTM), which instead analyses term co-occurrences over the entire collection of documents. Comparing the performances of LDA and BTM, it was found that the topic quality of BTM was superior to that of LDA. iii Acknowledgements I would like to thank Dr.
