Download E-Book The twenty-first century ushered mankind into adventurous, exciting, but challenging new horizons. The new power of computation led to colossal advances in genetics, space exploration, and quantum physics—just to name a few—while the power of human imagination reached new summits. At the same time, mankind faces threats posed by increased competition over resources, military rivalries, economic imbalance, environmental depletion, demographic growth, terrorism, wars and migration. Therefore, the goal of this series of conferences is to reunite promising and well established scholars in a creative environment, to propose holistic ways of thinking by nurturing the engagement of the global intellectual elite into conversations meant to tackle the new challenges faced by the mankind. It is a conversation which attempts to go beyond the existing paradigms of thinking. The invited participants include university professors, graduate students, researchers, scientists and practitioners from every field of inquiry. SCIENTIFIC EDITORS Titus Corlăţean is a diplomat, politician, legal scholar and educator; currently serving as a Romanian Senator and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of “Dimitrie Cantemir” Christian University in Bucharest, Romania. Between 2012 and 2014 he served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Romanian Government. A leading member of the Social Democrat Party, Dr. Corlăţean served as an elected member of the European Parliament and taught law at the University of Bucharest. Dr. Corlăţean holds a BA and a PhD in Law from the University of Bucharest, as well as advanced studies in International Relations and Diplomacy from the National Institute for Public Administration in Paris, and the National Defense College in Bucharest. He is the author of five books in the field of Human Rights and International Law, and of numerous scientific articles in the fields of law, human rights and post-Soviet secessionism. In 2004 he was awarded the “Star of Romania” National Order in the rank of Knight, and in 2014 he received the National Ioan-GheorgheOrder of Honor of Rotaru the Republic of Moldova. is an educator and a theologian specialized in the philosophy of religion, human rights, church law, and the practice of religious liberty. He is an Associate Professor at ‘Timotheus’ Brethren Theological Institute of Bucharest, and an ordained pastor in the Adventist Church in Romania, North Transylvania Conference, where he worked for 18 years as director of the Public Affairs and Religious Liberty program. He holds two undergraduate degrees (Reformed Theology and Law), one masters degree (Theology), and two doctorates: a PhD in Philosophy (awarded by the Romanian Academy, in Bucharest, Romania), and a PhD in Theology (awarded by the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of “Babeş-Bolyai” University, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.) Dr. Rotaru authored six books and over 200 studies and scientific articles. The last one represents an infernal, ominous topos, a place of no return. Bucharest and Paris were the cities that profoundly shaped his cultural identity. In the capital of his first country he assiduously attended to the birth and development of several modernist and avant-garde artistic groups. On the other hand, from the late 1920s on, the City of Lights made it possible for Fundoianu-Fondane to assert himself as a philosopher within the frames of existentialism and to be recognised as an essayist of European stature. His transfer to Drancy (1944), which then led to his being sent to the gas chambers of the Nazi concentration camp from Auschwitz-Birkenau, marked the be- ginning of a personal experience which precipitated into a brutal and atrocious end. This study will present a few documentary texts, published in literary journals of the French Resistance, such as Les Lettres Françaises and Les Cahiers du Sud. We will also include other aspects relating to Benjamin Fondane’s contributions to the periodical publications of the French Resistance, revealing the vocation of some cities and personalities to become entrenched in collective memory as benchmarks of moral revolt and intransigence.

    Catina -Alina Preda (Adjunct lecturer at the Dept. of Languages, Literature & Culture of the Black Sea Countries, Democritus University of Thrace) Literatura română la începutul secolului al XX-lea The Romanian Literature at the beginning of the 20th century Any scientific research upon any writer's work must start by establishing the spatial and temporal 'coordinates' in which the analysed phenomenon appears and de- velops. In this way, we think that a part of the marvelous work of Istratti can be better interpreted within the Romanian literature of the 20th century. This is why we intend to summarise the most significant aspects of the Romanian world of literature, as these are elements indispensable to our study. At the beginning of the 20th century, the debate between Maiorescu and Gherea is well known. It apparently stopped but it was re-ignited by some writers, out of habit, thus making the literary world of that period be dynamic. The need of a new direction for the Romanian literature was best perceived by Mihail Kogalniceanu, who actually succeeded in re-uniting some of the most signifi- cant authors of the time within the “Dacia literara” magazine. This explains the creation of a representative part of the literature, made up of writers who, even though not completely mature, proved themselves capable of un- derstanding their position and role under the new socio-cultural conditions that they had to reflect in one way or another. Not only did they manage to create a synthesis of the period of 1848, but they also achieved the gradual conquest of the socio-political fields and, eventually of the literary one.

    Salonul invitatilor BACOVIA, A POET FROM THE EDGES OF EXISTENCE Mihai CIMPOI Uniunea Scriitorilor din Moldova 1. The Poet - the Person When alive, Bacovia was considered a ‘minor poet’ and for a time after his death was quite forgotten. However today, he has again the scene, and is consid- ered great. Within the Romanian cultural space on both sides of the River Prut, he has become an emblematic figure of the existential sensibility that in our dynam- ic and convulsive present, is consuming modern man with his stressful spiritual states. Bacovia is read and studied by high school and university students who discover themselves in the monotonous, melancholy tonality of his verses. Many books, studies, essays, and PhD theses are being written about his work, and the postmodernists consider him their forerunner due to his fragmentary style and de- constructivism. How can you define a poet who once said that he was neither a traditional- ist, nor a modernist, and could not be caged in any one trend or artistic movement? Nevertheless, in some interviews he did admit to being a ‘poet of decadence’. Above all, Bacovia was an isolate, immersed in a zone of darkness and an underworld of strange shadows, of phantoms in a melange of desperate shrieks, groans and weeping that came from matter itself (‘. .heard all matter weeping ...). Such a solitary, timid figure, set apart by an endless neuroses, and living in a pro- vincial environment so full of misery, he appears to have come straight out of the slums of Dickens, or the gallery of those unstable, lyrical characters of Tennyson.

Este autorul unor volume de versuri și proză scrise în baza unei tehnici unice în literatura română, cu vădite influențe din marii lirici moderni francezi pe care-i admira. La început văzut ca poet minor de critica literară, va cunoaște treptat o receptare favorabilă, mergând până la recunoașterea sa ca cel mai important poet simbolist român și unul dintre cei mai importanți poeți din poezia română modernă. Biografie Copilăria George Andone Vasiliu (numele de naștere al poetului) s-a născut în casa comerciantului Dimitrie Vasiliu și a Zoei Vasiliu. Copilul în vârsta de doar 6 ani începe să învețe limba germană. Apoi între 1889-1890 urmează clasa întâi la un pension din Bacău. În 1891 îl aflăm înscris la Școala Primară Domnească nr. 1 din Bacău. Trei ani mai târziu absolvă cursul primar, în luna iunie. În același an se înscrie la Gimnaziul Ferdinand din Bacău. Toamna rămâne închis o noapte întreagă, din neatenția paracliserului, în turnul bisericii Precista din orașul natal. Această întâmplare îi va inspira poezia Amurg violet, scrisă în 1899. Anii traumatici din liceu și atmosfera cam rece îi inspiră un alt poem celebru, "Liceu". În 1898 își pune pe note câteva poezii precum și altele de Mihai Eminescu si Ștefan Petică.

In coelo et in terra: Lutheran Theological Structure of the Troped Magnificats of Michael Praetorius’s Megalynodia Sionia Abstract Michael Praetorius (1571–1621) ranks among the most prolific German musical figures of the seventeenth century. Despite his stature, many of his works, especially his earlier collections, remain largely understudied and underperformed. This paper examines one such early collection, the Megalynodia Sionia, composed in 1602, focussing on the relationship between formal structure of its first three Magnificat settings and the Lutheran theological ideal of uniting the Word of God with music. Structurally, these three Magnificats are distinguished by their interpolation of German chorales within the Latin text. In order to understand his motivations and influences behind the use of this technique unique at the time of composition, the paper explores Praetorius’s religious surroundings in both the personal and civic realms, revealing a strong tradition of orthodox Lutheran theology. To understand the music in light of this religious context, certain orthodox Lutheran liturgical practices are examined, in particular the Vespers service and alternatim, a compositional technique using alternating performing forces which Praetorius used to unite the Latin and German texts.

Transylvanian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Humanities THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN THE MEMORY OF ROMANIAN POETRY * CORINA CROITORU Abstract: Starting from the observation of the canonical periodisation of Romanian literature into antebellum, interbellum, and postbellum, this study aims for a critical recovery of the taboo segment, on bellum poetry, with a focus on Romanian poetry inspired by the First World War among war veteran writers. The goal is to prove that the careful analysis of Romanian war poetry can reveal not only the profile of a minor genre that is meant to record the seismic clash between man and history, but actually trace the path of a major search for language that is capable of expressing the magnitude of such a clash. Keywords: First World War, Romanian poetry, Memory, Combatants, Stances, Irony If the most traumatic events, as proven by research studies in Neurology, make for the most deep-seated memories, intensively stretching the human brain’s capacity to encode,1 then literature and by extension poetry, as the representation of the individual affective memory included in the patrimony of a people’s cultural memory, could never avoid the thematisation of the experience of World War I in the context of Romanian culture, as is the case for several cultural areas. It would have been nearly impossible for the Great War, as it has been known in Francophone and Anglo-Saxon areas, or the War for the Nation’s Reunion in the case of Romania, to irrigate with its unforeseen violence the imagination of poets who lived through it as combatants or civilians.

It is the discipline within music composition that was grounded on the powerful relationships between music and text. The term musica poetica was first coined by the Lutheran musician/teacher Nicolaus Listenius in 1533 to distinguish it from musica theorica (the study of music as a mathematical science) and musica practica (applied theory dealing with aspects of performance), the two disciplines continuing from the Medieval education curriculum. By the middle of the sixteenth century, musica poetica began to be firmly established, alongside musica theorica and musica practica, as an independent branch of composition instruction, and was taught in the Latin schools of Lutheran Germany. As the treatises on musica poetica convey, the teaching of musica poetica was modelled on pedagogical principles of rhetoric that were taught in the humanistic curriculum of the Latin schools. In defining compositional procedures in relation to text-setting, these treatises borrowed or emulated terminologies from the discipline of classical rhetoric, and treated a musical composition as a work of oration, with an aesthetic aim of producing a work that could instruct, move and delight (docere, movere, delectare) the auditor.
