  • The First World War in the Memory of Romanian Poetry
IDEAS • BOOKS • SOCIETY • READINGS © Philobiblon. Transylvanian Journal of Multidisciplinary Research in Humanities THE FIRST WORLD WAR IN THE MEMORY OF ROMANIAN POETRY * CORINA CROITORU Abstract: Starting from the observation of the canonical periodisation of Romanian literature into antebellum, interbellum, and postbellum, this study aims for a critical recovery of the taboo segment, on bellum poetry, with a focus on Romanian poetry inspired by the First World War among war veteran writers. The goal is to prove that the careful analysis of Romanian war poetry can reveal not only the profile of a minor genre that is meant to record the seismic clash between man and history, but actually trace the path of a major search for language that is capable of expressing the magnitude of such a clash. Keywords: First World War, Romanian poetry, Memory, Combatants, Stances, Irony If the most traumatic events, as proven by research studies in Neurology, make for the most deep-seated memories, intensively stretching the human brain’s capacity to encode,1 then literature and by extension poetry, as the representation of the individual affective memory included in the patrimony of a people’s cultural memory, could never avoid the thematisation of the experience of World War I in the context of Romanian culture, as is the case for several cultural areas. It would have been nearly impossible for the Great War, as it has been known in Francophone and Anglo-Saxon areas, or the War for the Nation’s Reunion in the case of Romania, to irrigate with its unforeseen violence the imagination of poets who lived through it as combatants or civilians.

Mihail Sadoveanu writes in the era of the great realist novel and the modern novel. He is the creator of the Romanian historical novel, who sees history as a huge scene in which great voivodes move in an epic, legendary and mythical space. The originality of his work lies in the ability to merge with the evoked world, so that a single narrator, the author himself, tells the life of the past and today. Sadoveanu's heroes are exponents of some categories, types or archetypes, exemplary for humanity through their deeds. Sadoveanu follows the social and historical condition of the individual, describing the present realities and those belonging to history or a past that the documents cannot attest. What gives charm to the story of Mihail Sadovenu is the mystery that requires to be revealed and that can be reached by discovering his music, the state of balance and the significance of Sadoveanu's silence. Literary critics have appreciated that the originality of Sadoveanu’s writing lays precisely in its lyricism in the realistic evocation of a living world. Sadoveanu's writings produce that state of steady happiness from enjoying the beauty of nature.

  • Pamfil Şeicaru. Author and Literary Character (Summary of the Doctoral Thesis)
Pamfil Şeicaru. Author and literary character (Summary of the doctoral thesis) Supervising professor: Prof. univ. dr. Ionel Funeriu Candidate: Ando Andrei The myth of greatly talented journalist, but also of blackmailer and immoral person created around Pamfil Șeicaru an unwanted crust which covered entirely his qualities and important contribution to the Romanian literature. The drama chronicles, the plays and novels, the setting up of the supplement Curentul literar (Literary trend), where young writers had been promoted, his activity as literary criticist, the literary portraits (real micro-novels) were put in shade by the harsh indictments written as editor and journal director by one of the most gifted Romanian pamphleteers of all times. It is the biographers‟, detractors‟ fault, the fault of all those who analyzed from a unilateral perspective, of bad will or ignorance, the meaning of the journalist‟s activity and the structure of his works. Only recently, the literary size of Seicaru‟s works was explored, fragmentary, roughly, in studies and media papers. We intend to search the universe of the Seicaru‟s pamphlets from a perspective not used until now – themes, stylist, contextual. Another objective of the thesis is the novel research of Pamfil Șeicaru‟s literary profile, which we identified as main character in 14 literary works. Argument Far from idealizing his image, this paper intends to carry on a lucid, objective analysis, based upon a vast documentation, without ideological views on Seicaru‟s personality and works. We have started in this adventure of knowledge, we have started from the premise of the recovery of the literate size, less known for that that remained nevertheless in the first plan of the intellectual life as gifted journalist.

The twenty-first century ushered mankind into adventurous, exciting, but challenging new horizons. The new power of computation led to colossal advances in genetics, space exploration, and quantum physics—just to name a few—while the power of human imagination reached new summits. At the same time, mankind faces threats posed by increased competition over resources, military rivalries, economic imbalance, environmental depletion, demographic growth, terrorism, wars and migration. Therefore, the goal of this series of conferences is to reunite promising and well established scholars in a creative environment, to propose holistic ways of thinking by nurturing the engagement of the global intellectual elite into conversations meant to tackle the new challenges faced by the mankind. It is a conversation which attempts to go beyond the existing paradigms of thinking. The invited participants include university professors, graduate students, researchers, scientists and practitioners from every field of inquiry. SCIENTIFIC EDITORS Titus Corlăţean is a diplomat, politician, legal scholar and educator; currently serving as a Romanian Senator and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law of “Dimitrie Cantemir” Christian University in Bucharest, Romania. Between 2012 and 2014 he served as Minister of Justice and Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Romanian Government. A leading member of the Social Democrat Party, Dr. Corlăţean served as an elected member of the European Parliament and taught law at the University of Bucharest. • My Career Profile As Outlined Here Originates in Two Major Directions of Research
My career profile as outlined here originates in two major directions of research. The first one commenced with my doctoral thesis, entitled “Decadence and Decadentism within Romanian Modernity (End of the 19th Century – First Half of the 20th Century)”, supervised by Prof. Sorin Alexandrescu and defended at the University of Bucharest in 2009. My pioneering doctoral research has opened up a new field of investigation in Romania: drawing on interdisciplinarity as all comparative studies do, I have studied on the one hand Decadentism as a literary movement which validated its aesthetics belatedly, and on the other decadence as a cultural and civilizational phenomenon within Romanian and European modernity. This approach has resulted in a robust comparative investigation, alongside a parallel study of art history concerning Symbolism within the Romanian fine arts relative to its European context; the latter topic is the subject matter of my Symbolism and Decadentism in the Art of 1900 (Institutul European, 2011). The very close ties between Symbolism in the arts and in literature, as well as the many aesthetic affinities between Symbolism and Decadentism in both literature and the arts, have allowed me an ample and nuanced recovery of the different stages of Romanian modernity. During the six-year research for the completion of my thesis, I had the opportunity to expand one of my doctoral papers into a book-length study standing apart from the thesis proper. Devoted to the work of Mateiu I. Caragiale, the book analyzes his oeuvre as the epitome of a culture of decadence that embodies an entire identity complex.
