STATUS
This is the eightieth biannual Newsletter of the IMRC and follows the last issue which appeared in February, 2020. The information presented here relates primarily to events connected with the IMRC during the spring and summer of 2020. For the benefit of new readers, data on the present structure of the IMRC are given on the last page of this issue. IMRC Newsletters for 1979-2020 are available electronically and can be requested via e-mail at [email protected]. RUSSIA A Russian colleague who is teaching at the University of Pennsylvania reports that even in Philadelphia Daniil Kharms is alive and well, witness to which is the following absurdity: The other day, bright and early, she left the house to take the 'bus to New York City so as to attend to business at the New York Public Library. But en route, only twenty minutes out of Philadelphia, the driver reported that something was wrong with the gears and brakes, so the passengers were obliged to step down and wait for another 'bus. In due time a second 'bus arrived and all mounted, but no sooner had the second vehicle departed than it bogged down in soft asphalt and refused to move. All exited once again and waited patiently for a third 'bus which, to everyone's delight, soon appeared. Triumphantly, if disgruntled, they entered the replacement, eager to make up for lost time, except that now the 'bus refused even to start: "Engine failure", reported the driver. At that point, our Russian colleague surrendered to destiny and, like Kharms with his "Falling-Out Old Women", instead of waiting for a fourth infelicitous vehicle, took a taxi home. 2

He has now turned his attention to the study of the role of punctuation in Russian and Anglo-American avant-garde poetry. Edward Kasinec (Book Culture Section, IMRC; and NYPL Curator Emeritus and Staff Associate at the Harriman Institute, Columbia) contributed the preface to the double issue of SEEIR (Slavic and East European Information Resources, Vol. 21, N. 3-4) for 2020, to which he also authored an article on Maurice Laserson's diary at the Hoover Institution, Stanford, and, with, Hee-Gwone Yoo, co-authored a review of Soviet and Eastern European Photographica at the Hoover. Rudolf Hulka's The Lost World of Subcarpathian Rus’, with Kasinec’s Foreword, saw its third printing last November. Mark Konecny (Associate Director, IMRC; and University of Cincinnati, Ohio) is Scholarly Communications and Digital Publishing Coordinator at the University of Cincinnati and, as head of Cincinnati Library Publishing Services, has published open access projects on topics in the Humanities and Social Sciences. In September he attended the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association meeting in Copenhagen and has an article, “Flying Too Close to the Sun -- Impersonations of Duncan in Russia”, appearing in The Poetics of Avant-garde in Literature, Arts, and Philosophy (from Lexington Books, Lanham, Maryland, 2020). Bernice Rosenthal (Philosophy and Religion Section, IMRC; and Fordham University, New York) continues to investigate philosophical and religious movements within Russian Modernism. Her recent book from Penn State, New Myth, New World: From Nietzsche to Stalinism, continues to enjoy acclaim. She is finishing her monograph on Patterns of Decadence and is also working on a book- length comparison of trends in Russian culture during the period 1890-1917 and in the United States since the 1960s. ANNOUNCEMENTS Jamey Gambrell, Slavist, translator and cultural historian, died in New York on 15 February aged 64. For information contact the director, Aleksandr Sankova at [email protected] Following the international conference ‘Discovering GES-2’ in Moscow on 29th October, V–A–C Foundation is excited to announce that its future home, GES-2, will open in September 2020 with a site-specific project by Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson. V–A–C was first established in Moscow in 2009 by Leonid Mikhelson and Teresa Iarocci Mavica and has produced a constant calendar of exhibitions, live performances, sociocultural programmes as well as co-produced projects with partners from across the world since its inception. Based in New York, the Malevich Society is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to advancing the knowledge about the Russian artist Kazimir Malevich and his work. In the belief that Malevich was a pioneer of modern art who should be recognized for his key contributions to the history of Modernism, the Society awards grants to encourage research, writing, and other activities related to his history and memory. The Society welcomes applications from scholars of any nationality and at various stages of their career. Graduate students are welcome to apply after completing at least one year of dissertation research. Proposed projects should increase the understanding of Malevich and his work, or augment historical, biographical, or artistic information about Malevich and/or his artistic legacy. The Society also supports translations and the publication of relevant texts.
