Synopsis of film First of all (and most importantly) this film is our life. It comes from our hearts … we live it, we breathe it, we put all our emotions and energy into it.

The film idea was born four years ago when I (Ovsanna Hovsepyan) and director, David Sarkissian, realized that we live by taking the lives of other creatures. We became vegetarians. At that time, I was 21 and David was 19 years old. We became animal protection activists in Armenia because we felt guilty for using the lives of so many animals over the course of our lives by eating, wearing and using them for different purposes. We were suffering from our sense of guilt. Our greatest desire was to exculpate our guilt by helping animals as much as we could.

Being filmmakers, we knew that film was the perfect way for us to help animals. We decided to shoot a film expressing our feelings and emo- tions, showing the world what we see and what is in our hearts.

We spent more that two years thinking about the film and researching films that had a similar topic. We considered potential heroes for the film, the scenes, the style, etc. We didn’t want our film to be like other, related films. We wanted to do something new.

We wanted our film to be not just about animals. QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE CLOUD NINE - Cleansing the world Of Cluster bombs Børrea Schau-Larsen 2009

Biography Børrea Schau-Larsen became interested in documentary film and digital storytelling dur- ing her MSc in Politics and Communications at London School of Economics. She is fasci- nated with how documentary films commu- nicate complex, social issues in creative and inspiring ways. Cloud Nine is Børrea’s first film as a director.

Synopsis of film Since World War II, cluster munitions have af- fected the lives of more than 400 million people worldwide. 90 % of victims are civilians, 2/3 are children. In December 2008 The Conven- tion on Cluster Munitions was signed in Oslo, Norway to set a new standard of international humanitarian law to protect civilians in conflict. But how effective will this treaty be when the major military powers refuse to sign and when financial institutions keep pouring money into the production of these weapons?

Steve Ballinger and his wife, Cassandra Mcko- wen, co-founded Cleared Ground Demining in 2005 with the intention of making a difference in the world of mines action. Leaving careers in the British military and investment banking, they decided to go to countries that other or- ganizations may not be prepared to go to, such as Guinea Bissau.

This film raises important questions related to the use of indiscriminate weapons and brings to our attention to long-term ramifications for Original Language: Original Format: Running Time: Year ofProduction: Nationality ofFilm Production Company orProducer: TECHNICAL DETAILS treaty isgoingtobeontheground? the land of unexploded ordnance? QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE RULETA DE LA VIDA (Life’s Roulette) Collective Direction by the Empanada Rellena Collective 2009

Biography Collective Direction by the Empanada Rellena Collective: Ex Child soldiers from Colombia.

Synopsis of film Ruleta de la Vida is the world’s first feature length, fictional film made by children who were once soldiers. Thousands of children have managed to escape the Colombian Civil War, many by fleeing the FARC, ELN, or paramili- taries to turn themselves into the police, others when the companies were demobilized. Fif- teen of these children came together to make a movie about their experiences, “so that people can understand that we are people of peace… and so that other children need not suffer as we did.”

With life in the urban underworld serving as a metaphor for battles in the jungle, these ex- child soldiers turned the stories of their lives into fiction, wrote the script, created the char- acters, and filmed the scenes. Only the editing was done by professionals.

The young filmmakers – a name they would prefer to “ex-child soldiers” – brought their life- stories together in three overlapping plots about life on the margins in Bogotá: 1) two friends who become enemies because of drug traffick- ing, 2) a brother and sister, abused by their fa- ther, seeking a new life on the street, and 3) a kidnapped drug dealer looking to make up for the errors he has made in his life. QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE Berlin. In an interview I pose the question of how an intelligent young man can voluntarily submit to a brutal regime. This initial theme leads my investigation to current problems: How do we handle the past? Which importance does one’s personal memory play? How does memory work? How are memorial places treaded nowadays? And finally: Which role do images, film shots, cinema and art play in each predominant system?

Synopsis of film The film is set in the wake of the terrorist attacks on Indian soil, to take up a micro-study of the problem. Set in the thick jungles of Indian terrain, the film is about a dissident woman activist from the Naxalite – a terrorist outfit with vague ideas of socialism – Group, who is watched by Ramu, after being recognized as covert. The film emphasizes the value of human life, and that terrorism has been taking lives indiscriminately and consistently. The woman terrorist having realized the vanity of living the life of a terrorist is under surveillance of another member, while Guru their immediate boss is trying to exploit her sexually. When he sees both Ramu and the woman in the jungles he suspects something amiss between the two, and tries to kill Ramu, while at this point, the woman comes to his rescue by offering to succumbing to his carnal desires.

The human in the animal is woken up by her gesture, and he sets free both Ramu and the woman, thus realizing the importance of life. He could have easily killed Ramu and even have sexually exploited her – but her offer awakens the human being in him.

Basically, the film tries to examine through this micro-level story, the val- ue of life, which terrorism has been taking away – whether religion, caste, creed, or beliefs - a better tomorrow for the groups. The film tries to pass on the message that they have consistently failed to gain love through acts of violence, and only by eschewing violence that love and human dignity is manifested.

Biography Jeremy Gilley is an actor who became an award winning filmmaker and in the late 1990’s be- came pre-occupied with questions about the nature of humanity and the issues of peace. Jeremy decided to explore these questions through the medium of film and his acclaimed new documentary, The Day After Peace, fol- lows his 10-year journey to establish a day of peace.

In 1999, Jeremy founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organisation, and in 2001 Peace One Day’s efforts were rewarded when the member states of the United Nations unani- mously adopted the first-ever day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 September annually – Peace Day.

As a direct outcome of Peace One Day’s cam- paign efforts in 2007/8, parties in Afghanistan recognized Peace Day resulting in UNICEF, W.H.O, UNAMA and others vaccinating 3.2 million Afghanistan children against polio. In 2007 over 100 million people in 192 coun- tries were engaged in Peace Day activities and in 14 of those countries, efforts were targeted towards providing life-saving activities and medical services on the Day.

Synopsis of film The Day After Peace follows the remarkable 10-year journey of award-winning filmmaker Jeremy Gilley to establish an annual Peace Day on 21 September. Synopsis of film “Forme” is based on a true story and deals with solitude. In other words, the solitude of a ten year old child that finds himself in a situation of extreme restriction. The child’s identity is only revealed at the end. “Forme” takes place in silence, in a dull and empty space that speaks with a loud voice. Light and darkness put gestures and feelings into the same painful frame, as darkness and anguish increase along with the tale. “Forme” shows the need of giving shape to our inner discomfort. Synopsis of film In a prison where the alternative to detention is decided depending on the case, a man - surviving by his daily rituals - is preparing to confront a particular occasion. The story is meant to highlight, through various symbols and mechanisms embedded within any prison system. However, it also wants to implicate a cold reflection on human existence dominated by the inevitability of fate, where the line between good and evil ceases to exist.

QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE tions of other things: the so-called innocent girl, wearing shoes with stars and stripes, that only cares to fill up gas; the Arab gas station attendant who wants to sell gas; the young Yankee fomented by the action; the peacekeeper forced to fearfully watch under his car’s hood; the wise man to whom someone “from home” makes it clear to him that it is bet- ter to leave. The characters are not actually repairing an engine, but they are making war: which is why the dead are taken for granted. It is not greasy, but it is bloody. When I explained to Blu (the young girl) the story I wanted to tell, say- ing she would eventually have to step on the boy’s face, she asked me puzzled: “Does that mean that I have to step over a dead body to fill up gas?”. The question of a ten-year-old child is the sense of Rossa Super. The style of the movie suits the story and actors: I wanted to create Rossa Super for the sole purpose of sending a message and not to have fun with the camera (which I obviously did anyways ...). It is true that there is a lot of movement but it is completely relevant to the story. Once the basic information was given to the actors, I was guided by their actions and then I moved as a consequence. I followed the same line while editing; why cut out a nice scene if it works? The “discrete” style of the film is all aimed at a precise moment: the last shot. Everything is at the end: the car that goes off, driven by an indiffer- ent child, the opera music becomes tragic, the -sequence idea and especially the idea of “our” names over the bodies of the dead boys.

SAINT ANTHONY, THE PORK AND THE COWBELL 2009 - HDV – postproduction – Ethnomusicologic Documentary

Synopsis of film Is the European Union convenient and to whom? Is it just an empty box or does it involve all of its citizens? Is it a real conquest or just made-up to hide the interests of a few people? It started in Paris on May 9th 1950 and was consolidated in Rome on March 25th 1957; this “Europe” seems to be unknown for many… The documentary, through the history, shows life in Europe to the public, a Europe made of open problems, achieved goals and ambitious projects to fulfill; the kind of Europe that was born after an afflicted past, marked by wars and dictatorships and grown thanks to profound values and brave choices. The result: peace, democracy, liberty, wealth, respect of human rights and solidarity among States - conquests of the European integration - has become a resource for all citizens. Giving voice to its people and to the important characters, the documen- tary reveals- even if surprisingly- the ideals of many people regarding the Europe of today and tomorrow, advising everyone to take a position.

Synopsis of film A strange character from a TV news broadcast on “YouTube” learns that the professor “Schiatta”, who is a distinguished scientist, has discovered “Sphighetto”; in other words, bad luck in the genes of dark pigment of the skin of the Mozambique children. It would be scientific proof that Italian children differ from those in Africa, also regarding their feelings and emotions. Horrified, the strange character, decides to investigate the truth, for himself. He connects via satellite with the white children and the black children to ask the same questions to which all children give the same answers. Games, joy, music, hopes, and dreams are the same, and the investigator, who turns out to be an alien suffering from men- tal colorblindness, will have big problems in distinguishing the two twin groups.

Synopsis of film A young farmer wakes up every morning at 4:30 to hoe his land. But someday this young man will have to defend his own rights, just like his grandfather, who tried to do the same in the year 1948.

Director’s Notes This short film intends to tackle the Politics issue in the eyes of a young Italian worker. The story concludes with individual liberty hymn: we must start to defend our rights again and among these, the first and inalienable, labour rights. A hoot against stale and uninspired ideologies, such as old religions, that are now in- creasingly harmful.

QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE and then the displacement in San Miniato bring Misia and Donato to become part of the Partisan War. On the other hand, Donato, eleven years old at the time, flees from that harsh reality, soaking in the reading of everything at hand, from old books to newspapers found on the street, emphasizing, in a dream with open eyes, fairytale characters presented in these readings. The story ends with passionate and romantic scenes, of Donato, his city, its people and that Tuscanian girl that he met during his Partisan adventures. That is how the tale of the journalist and the film on the canvas ends. A buzz of people enter - ... in our times. The same performers that appeared on the canvas become public in the theatre and their chatter expresses that the film has aroused interest. In the front row, the old Donato fell asleep, the usher and ticket-sellers are afraid that the old man is dead, but he is actually only asleep. They cannot see the child Donato, since it is only in the imagination of the old man. The ush- er and ticket--sellers are just like Alberto and Artemisia in the screened film. In fact, it is Donato that gave them that part in the film. Old Donato and young Donato leave the theatre and walk away while you hear the director’s voiceover, still in present day, which gives the stop for the last scene of the film. We are still on the initial film. Surrounded by a group of onlookers. They are the same spectators who came out of the cinema as well as the ones performing in the film on the canvas. The director ends the last scene. There’s now a close up on the director... Old Donato.

QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE With the photographer Sergio Fortuna, along with the director Paolo Ber- tola, she has produced the short film “Mira spuntar la rosa - la lirica d’amore nel Rinascimento” at the fifth centenary of the death of Lorenzo il Magnifico (Florence 1992). The video, which has been a great success, was presented in various celebrations of the Laurentian Year at Palazzo Vecchio and the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi in the Luca Giordano Hall. On this occasion, she had the honour of being presented by the great poet, Piero Bigongiari. The project, undertaken with the participation of young students, marked a turning point in the interests of the teacher that were directed more specifically to the social and historical field. With the constant participation of young people (which will continue), the short film “Ragazzi come noi-22 Marzo 1944” was produced in 2000 regarding the Champ de Mars massacre of five young farmers of Mugello. The work was greeted with enthusiasm and great emotion from the city of Florence that she felt so much pain involved in this memory and led to the delivery of the Gold Medal for civil value of the relatives of the vic- tims. The ceremony was held April 25, 2008 at the Altare della Patria in the presence of the President of the Republic, Giorgio Napolitano. It was a very touching ceremony for the participation of siblings of the young victims, which are now elderly, meeting with the young high school stu- dents that are authors of the short film. From this moment, after meeting with so many people from that dra- matic historical period, the witnesses came forward asking to deepen certain aspects, certain events remained in the shadows, especially the friendship with the historian, Prof. Giorgio Spini, with Amos Pampaloni, the dramatic character from Cephalonia, with commanders of partisan brigades, including the unforgettable “Gracco” of the Senigallia brigade, the first to enter Florence, the interest of the teacher who turned to the historical period 1943-45 and the military-partisan relations in the War of Liberation. From this analysis, which involved two years of research of documents, testimonies, and visits to places of battles (Montelungo, the Tuscan Apen- nines along the Gothic Line, La Valle del Senio ... etc.) the feature film “LA SCELTA - un viaggio nella memoria” was made. This satirises the ‘bubble’ way of life maintained by First World politicians when faced with the food crisis through a seemingly happy and theatrical scene.

QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE This film is not a didactic tool. Rather, it is a passionate presentation of the naked face of hunger. It will leave the viewer uneasy, confronting the stark realization that each of us is responsible.

Director’s Statement The film is meant to shock, to be a verbal/visual slap in the face, a heavy dose of reality about a subject that is too often taken for granted or left out of the daily dose of news. The Narrator addresses the camera directly and does not attempt to conceal his rage, a rage based on the simple premise that the world produces enough food to feed its inhabitants but does not. Why, he wants to know, and while he goes deeper and deeper in exploring that question throughout the film, he places the blame not on governments or organizations but on individuals, each and every viewer that is watching the film. The Narrator does his best to make them--you in fact--feel uneasy, guilty, so much so that every time you bring a forkful of food into your mouth you will think about those who are unable to do so. The film offers no prescriptive solution. That is not its purpose. The goal is to inform and activate. The spectre of hunger is there, now it is up to you to find a way to cope with it.

Synopsis of film Houna meets Manny one summer afternoon outside the US immigration office...

Director’s Statement Since September 11, 2001, US immigration policies have changed radically, and in 2003 the immigration office became part of the Department of Homeland Security. Many immigrants, both documented and undocumented, have experi- enced a hostile atmosphere ever since. Houna & Manny is inspired by two recent tragedies near Boston, where the film takes place: 361 immigrant factory workers were arrested and separated from their children; and Obain Attouoman, a high school teacher who mistakenly came to his immigration appointment on the wrong day, was deported back to his birth country Ivory Coast, where his life remains in danger as a union activ- ist. The film attempts to show a day in the life of two teenagers and the impact of US immigration policy on their lives.

Synopsis of film Chaturanga is the story of a love that is caught between conflicting worlds of ideas. Set in Colonial Bengal in the turn of the twentieth century, the film weaves a rich tapestry of crisscrossing desires and moralities. The lead protagonist Sachish fleets from radical positivism to religious mysti- cism in his quest for life’s meaning. However, his search ultimately yields nothing but crushing disillusionment. This is because he cannot square his abstract ideals with the powerful presences of two women in his life. One of them is Damini, a young Hindu widow, and the other is Naniba- la, the abandoned mistress of Sachish’s own brother. Sachish tries to con- vince himself that Nanibala is simply a helpless woman who needs to be ‘rescued’ by him. Similarly, during his later religious phase, he pretends that the widow Damini is merely an enticement of Nature that must be avoided at all costs for spiritual salvation. Chaturanga thus becomes, af- ter a point, a psychodrama of unbelievable cruelty. Nanibala becomes a Sachish’s viewpoint at the end of the film. QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE PARADISO Alessandro Negrini 2009

Bio-filmography Alessandro Negrini is an Italian film director and poet from Turin. He spent much of the late 1990s traveling Europe and writing. In 1998 he moved to Northern Ireland and continued his studies in film making, specialising in digital film/new me- dia and digital editing techniques at the Academy Award Nominated production company Nerve Centre. His poetry has been published in both English and Italian and in 2002 his poem Moth won first prize and critical acclaim at the Dublin International Poetry Competition. His most pub- lished and acclaimed work has dealt with social exclusion, and homelessness. In 1995 he had the opportunity to combine his poetry with film in a 30-minute short film entitled IMMAGINI Im- magini – Mad Portraits. The film was inspired by the work of R.D. Laing English psychiatrist, campaigner and poet and the 1980s’ Franco Ba- saglia’s law reform of the oppressive Italian psy- chiatric health system. The short movie followed the lives of patients in an Italian mental health institute and showed how the closure of the hos- pital changed their lives. In 2000, Alessandro was commissioned by the Turin National Theatre to direct POSTA PRIORITARIA (Priority Mail) based on epistolary material from various intellectuals and artists from England, Hungary and Italy living during Nazism and Fascism. In 2001, he wrote and directed THE HOUSE OF PHRASES, a short film dealing with homelessness through the magical side of words. Winner of Best International Short online at the 14th Foyle Film Festival, he was so nominated in several interna- tional festivals, including a special screening at the Havana Film Festival. QUARTAFOURTH EDIZIONEEDITION 2009 2009 A FILM FOR PEACE 2009 Feature documentary PARADISO, a creative film on the lives of the Fountain estate in Derry, Produced by Margo Harkin, Besom Productions. Commissioned by BBC and broadcasted on BBC1 on 10th January 2009.

Synopsis of film ‘They teach us there must be a boundary line in our lives. But man, there’s no boundary line to music.’

There are plenty of ghettos around the world, all of them with their own injustice, each of them living on its knees. There is one ghetto condemned to something even worse: it has forgotten its music. It’s The Fountain, in the heart of the city: it was once a vibrant community, where people used to dance together despite religious differences, but it is now a disappearing Protestant neighborhood killed by fear and politics and turned into an open air prison, living behind a fence. Roy Arbuckle, a musical troubadour, decides it’s time to challenge one of the monstrosities left by the war in Northern Ireland: fear. He wants to reunite his former showband, The Signetts and his formers musicians, nowadays in their seventies, that lived the heady glamour of the Ireland Show band era, in a high-risk attempt to try to do something that would be normal anywhere else but not yet in Northern Ireland: having a major dance night and getting Protestants and Catholics to dance together. If it wasn’t enough, this event made Roy want to open up the stronghold of Protestant heritage and culture in Derry: the Memorial Hall, which was once the most popular dance hall in the heart of the city. A colourful, melancholic and ironic musical journey through a ghetto that, even if it finds itself in its last dance, it doesn’t want to miss a single step of it. Let’s save pessimism for better times.
